Cross Border Showcase - A Welcome Surprise print insert
What is it about a road trip that’s so much fun?
Maybe it’s the sense of freedom you get when you leave “the
usual” behind, even for a while. Or the fresh perspective
that travel often brings. Being on the road heightens
companionship and the joy of shared experiences. It bonds
friendships.
Just a few days. That’s all you need.
Take a few days to do or see something you’ve never seen
or done. To follow your tastes and interests. To feel the
romance again. To have time with the kids—real time. Make
some new memories.
We invite you to explore places in New York State you may
never have dreamed existed, and yet are an easy road trip
away. In the time it takes to watch your favorite movie, you’ll
be here.
Deeply wooded hillsides and rolling countrysides are put
to flame with rich colour as autumn claims the calendar.
Farm markets burst with the bounty of our rich farmlands.
People gather for shows, dancing, live music, events, and art.
Sensational wines, craft beers, and spirits are savored in cozy
pubs and innovative restaurants.
You’ll enjoy your road trip here so much, you’ll be planning
the next one before you get home.
We’ll be right here, waiting to welcome you.
Public Market, Rochester
1. The Genesee
Riverway Trail.
Explore almost
anywhere in Rochester
from along this trail,
and take in foliage
set against gorgeous
city skylines. This
38.6 meter long, multi-use trail is a designated National
Recreation Trail that extends through the scenic, cultural
and historic heart of Rochester. Walk, run, or bike along the
Genesee River—there’s a scenic gorge and three waterfalls,
plus three historic parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
City attractions, services, and popular neighborhoods are
easily accessed, too.
2. Letchworth State Park. Imagine
having an eagle’s-eye view of the
changing leaves as you float in a
hot air balloon (through October
15) above “The Grand Canyon of
the East.” Hike, canoe or horseback
ride through some of the most
magnificent scenery in the United
States. The Genesee River roars over
three major waterfalls in this park
covering 5,807 hectares. Or drive through
the park and stop at stunning overlooks.
The new Humphrey Nature Center offers
interactive exhibits in all four seasons.
3.Chimney Bluffs
State Park. View the
forested shoreline of
Lake Ontario from some
of the strangest land
formations anywhere.
Winds, rain, snow, and
waves have shaped massive earthen spires over thousands of
years -and continue their sculpting even now. Some of these
spires rise up 46 meters above the lakeshore. Hike almost
6.4km of nature trails through the park, including a 1.6km
trail along the Bluffs.
5 Fabulous leaf peeping trails
In autumn, our landscape becomes a jeweled cloak of colours.
Here are five ways to enjoy fabulous fall foliage.
4. Bristol Mountain
Aerial Adventures.
Why not get inside
the forest canopy for
a close-up view? The
New York Aerial Park
takes you through a
series of 7 challenge
courses with varying
degrees of difficulty
and height. Elements
include zip lines,
tight rope walk, rope
ladders, and bridges
suspended between
platforms secured
to trees. Or fly through the trees on the New York Zipline
Canopy Tour, with 7 zip lines measuring over 1,524 meters,
4 bridges, and two off road rides. Kids aged 4–7 love the two
aerial courses specifically designed just for them. Wherever
you are, you’ll have amazing views of the Bristol Hills ablaze
in colour.
5. Robert H. Treman
State Park. Wild, rustic,
rugged, teeming with
waterfalls, streams,
and rock pools, this
park is full of magic.
Six trails wind through
spectacular craggy
gorges and wooded
glens. The crown jewel is
Enfield Glen, where trails
follow the gorge past
12 waterfalls—like the
35 meter Lucifer Falls,
with its long-distance
view down the gorge to the lower park, and the Devil’s
Kitchen Falls. The changing foliage, ferns and moss create a
fantasyland. The hiking is strenuous to moderate. A three-
mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail goes through the park.

4 Unique Trails in Upstate
New York. crossbordershowcase.com
Whatever you have a taste for—or
a curiosity about—there’s a trail for it.
1. Apple Tasting Tour. The
southern shore of Lake Ontario
between Rochester and
Syracuse is Apple County. It’s
the #1 apple-producing area
in New York State and works
with local farms, farm markets,
cideries and wineries to offer
the Apple Tasting Tour throughout the month of October.
Learn the difference in apple varieties in taste, texture and
scent. Pick up some of your favorites—and don’t forget the
yummy baked goods, fresh local produce, cider and wines
along the trail.
2. Brew Central. For
decades, New York State
was the #1 beer producer
in the United States—and
central New York was
the hop capital of the
world. Lucky you—you’re
just in time for the craft
renaissance brewing in the
region once again! Sip the
state’s best craft beverages on a trail from Syracuse to Utica
to Cooperstown. Hear the stories and traditions of Central
New York’s brewers, distillers, publicans and vintners. Their
craft beers, hard ciders, wines and spirits are on par with any
of the United States’ finest.
3. The Chocolate Trail.
Mmm... chocolate. In
Corning’s historic Gaffer
District, chocolate comes
in many forms. It’s mouth-
watering candy on one stop
of this tour. On another,
it’s a chocolate martini. Or
cocoa bean-flavored lip liner. Even dogs get carob-flavored
treats. The chocolate list goes on. Find it all in a picturesque
downtown known for its exceptional shopping, dining,
and arts, just a walk away from the world famous Corning
Museum of Glass.
4. The Discovery Trail.
This family-friendly trail features
eight brainy attractions around
the home of Cornell University,
Ithaca, in the southern Finger Lakes.
It’s a collaboration of fascinating
attractions like the Cayuga Nature
Center, the Sciencenter, The
Museum of the Earth, and the
Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art.
Learn about the environment, art, birds, the mastodon that
roamed the glaciers (which formed the hundreds of gorges
in the area), and get hands-on with innovative, inspiring
activities, both indoors and outside.

Every road trip needs a destination that’s close enough to
get to, with plenty of time to enjoy a getaway—but different
enough for new experiences and adventures.
Rochester is a city
that knows how
to play at every
age. It’s energetic,
creative, and
innovative, but with
a friendly, laid-back
vibe. There’s no city
“hotter” for arts and culture than Rochester, outside of New
York City itself.
Just a 90-minute drive from your border crossing, New York
State’s third largest city is central enough for day trips south
and east in the state. It’s only 30+ minutes to the gateway of
the Finger Lakes region and more than 100 wineries, in some
of the most stunning scenery in the country.
But don’t expect the sticker-shock and hassle you find in
some other cities. You’ll be surprised at how affordable it is in
the Rochester area.
It’s easy to navigate. And there’s plenty of free parking.
Unplugged Family Fun
Rochester believes in play, fun, exercise, exploring, and
discovery—no matter what your age—inside or out! It’s made
for fun holidays and school breaks.
Immerse yourself in the world of The Strong—national
museum of play in the heart of downtown Rochester. Plan
on spending several hours exploring The Strong’s Toy Hall of
Fame, vast exhibit spaces, the kid- sized Wegmans Super Kids
Market and life-sized Sesame Street. Bigger kids can check
out the eGameRevolution. (Don’t miss the gift shop!)
Got older kids? Go
Kart Racing at the
huge indoor track
at Pole Position
Raceway, located
at Marketplace Mall.
The Memorial Art Gallery is
considered one of the finest
regional art galleries in the country,
affectionately called “the mini-Met.”
The night is yours! You’ll find a
varied, vibrant live music scene in
clubs, cafes, pubs and performing
arts centers, even the historic The
Little movie theatre.
There are more theatre and
dance performances in Rochester
than anywhere in the state outside
of New York City itself.
The magnificent Eastman Theatre
is home to the world-renowned
Rochester Philharmonic
Orchestra, with an exciting array
of performances from concerts
to international guest artists
and large-scale opera
productions.
Sip & Taste
Known as one of the
most creative and
innovative cities
in the nation,
be prepared for delectable surprises when it comes to
Rochester, NY’s specialties in food and drink!
Rich farmlands, local
specialties and innovative
chefs combine to offer
everything from ethnic
dishes to fine dining in
sophisticated settings.
This is the nation’s 3rd
-largest wine producing region, with more than 100 wineries
from Rochester to the Finger Lakes. Savor award-winning
vintages gaining world-
class reputations.
Finger Lakes wineries are
within a 90-minute drive
of Rochester. In fact, Casa
Larga Vineyards is just 20
minutes from downtown.
The Seneca Park Zoo is open all year—known for its kid-
centered educational focus and walk-ability. See African
elephants, lion and baboon families, funny meerkats and
much more.
Time-travel back
to 19th- century
life at Genesee
Country Village &
Museum, one of
the largest living,
working history
museums in the
country. Visit a
world of cowbells,
baking bread, wood chopping and old-time games from
pioneer to Victorian days.
Go Indoor climbing at RockVentures. Soar at Altitude
Trampoline Park. And for cool, hands-on exhibits visit the
Rochester Museum & Science Center.
Find the Romance
A special night out, just the two of you. An intimate dinner
at a cozy bistro. Walking hand-in-hand through golden
leaves on quiet neighborhood streets lined with Victorian
architecture. Finding a unique treasure in the many
galleries and shops in picture-book villages along the Erie
Canal. Discovering a new favorite place to come back to.
Rediscovering each other. So many reasons to visit Rochester.
Arts & Culture
Rochester is an
epicenter of film
and photography.
The George
Eastman Museum,
a 50,586 square
meter estate,
is home to the
world’s leading
collections of
photography
and film.

Super Shopping
Choose 1, 2, or all 3 malls! You’ll find stores not found
anywhere else in Upstate New York, including Von Maur, LL
Bean, and a Land’s End Inlet. Rochester’s super-regional,
upscale Eastview Mall can keep you busy all afternoon,
catering to high-end, fashion-forward tastes. Or explore The
Marketplace Mall or The Mall at Greece Ridge (one of the
largest shopping centers in the country).
Welcoming
Neighborhoods
The East End, Corn
Hill, the St. Paul
Quarter, the South
Wedge, Park Avenue
neighborhood and
the new College
Town near the University of Rochester are beautiful, intimate
city neighborhoods with an eclectic nightlife, fascinating
shops, and trendy restaurants.
Artisan Brews
Old-time brews and
up-and-coming craft
breweries also make the
area a stand-out, along
with new artisanal
locally-distilled spirits—
bourbons, whiskeys,
grappa, eu de vie and
vodkas.
Follow the Rochester
Craft Beverage
Trail. Stop at Black
Button Distilling,
Rochester’s first grain
to glass distillery since
prohibition, within sight
of the award-winning
Rochester Public
Market.
Nearby, tour Rohrbach Brewery to see hops, malted barley
and water go through the process of becoming a great beer.
Lost Borough Brewing is just a few minutes from the Market.
When the Snow
Flies
Bristol Mountain
Resort is a favorite with
Canadian skiers for
its “Big Vertical”—an
almost 366 meter drop,
the highest east of the
Rockies. There’s wicked downhill and boarding, two high
speed quads, and
35 slopes and
trails—a variety of
inclines for every
skier and boarder
from beginner
to expert. Ski
all day into the
night—96% of the
trails are lighted.
George Eastman Museum
There’s great
ice skating,
snowshoeing and
cross-country
skiing, too.
If outlets light your fire, Waterloo Premium Outlets®
features 100 designer and brand name stores 40 minutes east
of Rochester off I-90—a huge outdoor shopping center with
free parking and hot bargains for Canadians. Don’t forget our
lower sales taxes, too
For some, shopping is bliss. You’ll have lots of opportunities
to find the perfect buy for every occasion or just-because-
you-love-it—whatever your lifestyle—on tree-lined Main
Streets in towns with 19th century buildings and storefronts.
In chic boutiques, antique shoppes, museum gift shops, and
little galleries. Or along the Erie Canal in towns full of quaint
shops and restaurants.

  • 2. What is it about a road trip that’s so much fun? Maybe it’s the sense of freedom you get when you leave “the usual” behind, even for a while. Or the fresh perspective that travel often brings. Being on the road heightens companionship and the joy of shared experiences. It bonds friendships. Just a few days. That’s all you need. Take a few days to do or see something you’ve never seen or done. To follow your tastes and interests. To feel the romance again. To have time with the kids—real time. Make some new memories. We invite you to explore places in New York State you may never have dreamed existed, and yet are an easy road trip away. In the time it takes to watch your favorite movie, you’ll be here. Deeply wooded hillsides and rolling countrysides are put to flame with rich colour as autumn claims the calendar. Farm markets burst with the bounty of our rich farmlands. People gather for shows, dancing, live music, events, and art. Sensational wines, craft beers, and spirits are savored in cozy pubs and innovative restaurants. You’ll enjoy your road trip here so much, you’ll be planning the next one before you get home. We’ll be right here, waiting to welcome you. Public Market, Rochester 1. The Genesee Riverway Trail. Explore almost anywhere in Rochester from along this trail, and take in foliage set against gorgeous city skylines. This 38.6 meter long, multi-use trail is a designated National Recreation Trail that extends through the scenic, cultural and historic heart of Rochester. Walk, run, or bike along the Genesee River—there’s a scenic gorge and three waterfalls, plus three historic parks designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. City attractions, services, and popular neighborhoods are easily accessed, too. 2. Letchworth State Park. Imagine having an eagle’s-eye view of the changing leaves as you float in a hot air balloon (through October 15) above “The Grand Canyon of the East.” Hike, canoe or horseback ride through some of the most magnificent scenery in the United States. The Genesee River roars over three major waterfalls in this park covering 5,807 hectares. Or drive through the park and stop at stunning overlooks. The new Humphrey Nature Center offers interactive exhibits in all four seasons. 3.Chimney Bluffs State Park. View the forested shoreline of Lake Ontario from some of the strangest land formations anywhere. Winds, rain, snow, and waves have shaped massive earthen spires over thousands of years -and continue their sculpting even now. Some of these spires rise up 46 meters above the lakeshore. Hike almost 6.4km of nature trails through the park, including a 1.6km trail along the Bluffs. 5 Fabulous leaf peeping trails In autumn, our landscape becomes a jeweled cloak of colours. Here are five ways to enjoy fabulous fall foliage. 4. Bristol Mountain Aerial Adventures. Why not get inside the forest canopy for a close-up view? The New York Aerial Park takes you through a series of 7 challenge courses with varying degrees of difficulty and height. Elements include zip lines, tight rope walk, rope ladders, and bridges suspended between platforms secured to trees. Or fly through the trees on the New York Zipline Canopy Tour, with 7 zip lines measuring over 1,524 meters, 4 bridges, and two off road rides. Kids aged 4–7 love the two aerial courses specifically designed just for them. Wherever you are, you’ll have amazing views of the Bristol Hills ablaze in colour. 5. Robert H. Treman State Park. Wild, rustic, rugged, teeming with waterfalls, streams, and rock pools, this park is full of magic. Six trails wind through spectacular craggy gorges and wooded glens. The crown jewel is Enfield Glen, where trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls—like the 35 meter Lucifer Falls, with its long-distance view down the gorge to the lower park, and the Devil’s Kitchen Falls. The changing foliage, ferns and moss create a fantasyland. The hiking is strenuous to moderate. A three- mile section of the Finger Lakes Trail goes through the park. Stokoe Farms Finger Lakes

It’s the #1 apple-producing area in New York State and works with local farms, farm markets, cideries and wineries to offer the Apple Tasting Tour throughout the month of October. Lucky you—you’re just in time for the craft renaissance brewing in the region once again! Sip the state’s best craft beverages on a trail from Syracuse to Utica to Cooperstown. Hear the stories and traditions of Central New York’s brewers, distillers, publicans and vintners.
