By: Shreya Jain
Introduction
95% of parents think students
should carry their cell phones in

"cell phones are just another
major distraction in school"
What is a mobile phone?
 An electronic telecommunications device often referred to as a cellular phone
or cell phone.
 Mobile phones connect to a wireless communications network through radio
wave or satellite transmissions.
 Most mobile phones provide
 voice communications,
 short message service (SMS)
 multimedia message service (MMS)
 newer phones may also provide internet services
 web browsing
 e-mail.

school?

 Kids can play games on them in class
 Can text other students in class
 Can text parents to bring forgotten
homework
Why can teachers have their phones in
class?
Teachers cannot cheat
Have contact with family in case of
emergency
Will not text other teachers
Who should be allowed to have cell
phones in school?
Philadelphia schools allow kids to carry
cell phones in school
Parents say if teachers can then
students should be able to
Teacher can only staff members should
have cell phones in school
Why should students be allowed to have
cell phones in school?

to be in contact with
their parents

Disadvantages of a mobile phone
 Cost- With monthly costs starting at $40 for voice service as of 200, cell
phone use is expensive. Added to that are the costs of hardware, text
messaging, roaming, and downloading.
 Distraction- Cell phones can ring in the middle of movies, music concerts,
plays, and other areas where silence is required, such as libraries, bookstores,
and hospital rooms. This happens despite signs and verbal requests. In
addition, glow of cell phone screens from text messages can annoy and
distract people in the darkness of a theater.
 Driving- Cell phone use while operating a vehicle has caused so many
accidents that five states banned calling and 12 had prohibited text
messaging, as of 2009.
Disadvantages of a mobile phone
continued
 Lack of privacy- Because cell phones provide no audio
feedback, through the earpiece , some people talk much
louder with cell phones than they do through landlines.
This exposes the people around them to their
conversations.
 Health- Cell phones emit low levels of radio frequency
radiation. Large amounts of this energy can heat and
damage tissue, especially around the eyes and testicles,
which do not have enough blood flow to carry such heat.
There is also concern that cell phones might cause cancer,
headaches, sleep problems, and memory loss.
