Cert III Semester 1 introduction (2010)

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Welcome to semester one and your first year of study with Victoria University and your partner institute in China.
  • #4: Your first year of study with Victoria University is going towards this award: The Certificate III in ESL (Further Study)
  • #6: The certificate program you are now enrolled in will focus on studying English for Academic purposes.
  • #7: This certificate is designed to help you prepare for your diploma and degree courses. Academic English is quite different from General English – you will be studying topics through which you will learn to improve your study skills and produce university level research papers and presentations.
  • #8: All of the lessons, tasks and assessments you successfully complete during your first year go towards this award – the Certificate III in ESL (Further Study).
  • #9: This course will help you increase your English level in the four macro skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking.
  • #10: For the most part, your visiting foreign teachers will be teaching and assessing you in writing and speaking. Your local Chinese teachers will be teaching and grading your reading and listening work.
  • #11: For the most part, your visiting foreign teachers will be teaching and assessing you in writing and speaking. Your local Chinese teachers will be teaching and grading your reading and listening work.
  • #12: As with all certificate, diploma, and degree programs, several units of study or courses must be completed in order to qualify to receive the award.
  • #14: Turn to page 3 of your Student Handbook - Let's take a look at the different units of study that make up the Certificate III in ESL (Further Study).
  • #25: The Certificate III is structured around thematic modules. Module 1 focuses on the theme of organisations and examines the genres of description, historical narrative, processes and instructions.
  • #26: Let's have a look at the assessments you will be doing for this course.
  • #28: As with any academic course, all assessment tasks (graded and ungraded) must be successfullycompleted to pass the course (21939 VIC) and be eligible to receive your Certificate III in ESL (Further Study) at the end of your first year ofUniversity.
  • #29: Let’s take a look at the graded tasks for the Certificate III Course.
  • #30: Turn to page 6 of your Student Handbook
  • #31: This semester – you will complete an essay and an oral presentation. They are each worth 100 marks.
  • #32: Let's take a quick look at the way you are graded for the two main assessment tasks – your written essay and your oral presentation.   This chart is in your module book and it is important that you examine it closely.   It is divided into Columns A, B, and C. The criteria that your teacher will use to grade your work is very explicit meaning that you know exactly what you need to include in your essay and presentation in order to receive a pass, a good or an excellent mark.
  • #33: Column A is the minimum you must complete in order to pass the task. That means that column B and C points will be awarded only after all of column A (a minimum to pass) has been achieved. Be sure to read the grading criteria very carefully in your module book and to ask your teacher when you are unsure about anything.
  • #34: Next semester, semester two, you will complete a researched essay and an oral presentation. In addition, next semester you will also complete a summary writing task and a panel debate speaking task. Each task is worth 100 marks.   Look in your student handbook for details about how each grade is calculated and what percentage goes toward the unit of study.
  • #35: These are some of the keywords that you will encounter in the Certificate III in ESL (Further Study) course.
  • #37: You will become part of a study team and create an individual profile and assessment portfolio.
  • #38: You will use a course book called Contemporary Topics and listen to topical lectures for note taking purposes. This will help you prepare to take notes during your diploma and degree lectures.
  • #39: You will be learning English computer terminology. Your ungraded tasks include:Showing your teacher you are able to understand and follow directions, visiting websites and completing activities in your workbook.  With your study team, you will create an FAQ page – frequently asked questions about computer related issues.  In addition, you will research national flags and send your work to your teacher.
  • #40: This brings us to the end of the introduction to your Certificate III in ESL (Further Study) course. We hope you enjoy semester one with Victoria University while studying at our partner institute in China.
