Department of Community and Family Medicine Newsletter DECEMBER 1, 2006 VOLUME 2, ISSUE 4 The Department of Community and Family Medicine is a diverse collection of patient care, education and research programs focused on the common goal of improving the health of people in their communities. Through this newsletter, we hope to celebrate our diversity by sharing the accomplishments, innovations and goals of the faculty and staff of CFM. Clinical Translational Science Award Duke is one of 12 institutes that will receive a combined total of $699.5 million in funding from the NIH over five years to advance translational medicine through the creation of the Duke Translational Science Institute (DTSI). Rob Califf, MD, DUMC Vice Chancellor for Clinical Research is the center’s new director. The virtual institute will work to accelerate the adaptation of clinical discoveries into applicable medicine and to explore and combat health inequalities. One of the 3 components or “pillars” of the DTSI is the Duke Center for Community Research (DCCR). Lloyd Michener, MD, Chairman of the Department of Community and Family Medicine has been appointed director of the center. By involving the Durham community in the research process, the DCCR will create a climate where the goal of improving the health of Durham citizens becomes a shared agenda between the University and local citizens. The DCCR is designed with a major commitment to teaching the community and to facilitating access to the research process, from design through the reporting of results. In order to most effectively interact with the community, the DCCR outreach program will have two major components, The Community Health Research Training Center and the Community Research Liaison Center. The Community Health Research Training Institute will provide education for physicians and investigative staff about the art and science of performing research in community settings and will assist in improving the research process. The Community Research Liaison Center will provide data and support to local community groups and facilitate the development of collaborative projects between community groups and Duke researchers. A Community Health Advisory Board will be created as a means to involve local leaders in the community research process. Michael Easley has named Peggy Riley Robinson, MS, MHS, PA-C, a faculty member in Duke University’s physician assistant program, to serve on the North Carolina Medical Board. Robinson began her three-year term on November 1, 2006. The Medical Board is responsible for licensing, monitoring and disciplining physicians statewide in order to ensure a high level of patient safety. The board comprises 12 appointed members: seven physicians, one doctor of osteopathy, one physician assistant or nurse practitioner, and three members of the public with no medical background. Robinson is the first physician assistant to serve on the board who also holds a faculty position. At Duke, she focuses on teaching students about clinical medicine and how to physically assess patients, and she also conducts a primary care practice, treating patients of all ages. Robinson holds a master's of health science from Duke and a master's of science in microbiology from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Robert Richardson Receives Lifetime Achievement Award Robert Richardson, PT, Med, FAPTA, has been awarded the Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals’ (ARHP) 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award. ARHP, a division of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), recognizes its members’ outstanding contributions to the field of rheumatology through its annual awards program. The Lifetime Achievement Award is considered its highest honor. Richardson is only the fifth individual to be so honored by ARHP in its history. Garry Silvey Receives AMIA Distinguished Poster Award Garry Silvey, senior software engineer in the Division of Clinical Informatics, received an American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Distinguished Post Award at the AMIA Annual Symposium in November, 2006. Eight posters were selected for the award from the more than 200 posters presented at the meeting. Posters are judged for this competition based on many elements including Readability, Layout, Information Flow, Color, Content and Verbal Presentation. Silvey's poster, "User Interface Considerations for Collecting Data at the Point of Care in the Tablet PC Computing Environment," presented the software that was developed as part of an NEI Grant titled "Improving the Quality of Diabetes Eye Care". It is a prototype patient data entry application for the Diabetes Eye Care clinic environment.
