Exchange is reliant on your site topology for mail routing

Preparing the Schema for Exchange
If requested for a comprehensive list of schema modifications they can be located on the
Exchange installation DVD

Recommended to copy the media to a local HDD
Exchange2013MediaSetup.exe will automatically perform schema modifications

Preparing AD for Exchange
If using a remote Windows client (Windows 8 or better) to manage your infrastructure you will
need the remote server admin tools
◦ Install-WindowsFeature Rsat-Adds
Three commands to manually prepare AD for Exchange
◦ Prepare the Schema; performed once as an Enterprise Admin/Schema Admin with access to the Schema
master
.Setup /PrepareSchema /IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
◦ Prepare the configuration partition in AD and create the Exchange organization
.Setup /PrepareAd /OrganizationName:OrgName
/IAcceptExchangeServerLicenseTerms
◦ Prepare the current domain or all domains for Exchange (performed in any domain that uses Exchange
even if no Exchange servers exist in the domain)

Exchange Server 2013 Roles
Mailbox – stores MB database and uses the hub transport service to relay email
Client Access – connects Outlook to the mailbox server
Edge – works on the perimeter as a anti-virus/spam gateway
Exchange 2013 Versions
Exchange Server 2013 has two server licenses as defined by product key (can reissue key later
and switch up from trial/standard/enterprise at a later date – no downgrades)
◦ Standard – supports 5 mounted databases per server
◦ Enterprise – RTM 50 databases, Cumulative Update 2 (CU2) supports 100 databases (16 TB each)
Exchange 2013 has two Client Access License (CALs) that can be mixed/matched. Standard CAL
and Enterprise CAL

Exchange Mailbox Databases
How many databases do you need?
◦ Separation of departments into different databases
◦ Depends on service level agreements (SLA)
◦ 1-2 TB per database recommended
◦ ESEUTIL (tool used to perform maintenance on MB ESE databases) takes much longer to complete on larger databases
◦ Backup and recovery times longer for larger databases
◦ Different hardware and tools will have differing backup/recovery times
◦ Database Availability Groups (DAG) replicates on a database level

Exchange 2013 Public Folders
Microsoft would prefer companies move to SharePoint and as such have been trying to minimize
Public Folders in the past two versions of Exchange Server (2007 & 2010).
Public Folders have improved for Exchange 2013
◦ Now a mailbox within a MB database (was a separate database in previous versions of Exchange)
◦ Regular mailbox cmdlets work on Public Folder mailboxes – making migrations easier
◦ Public Folders now have only one writeable copy of the the public folder mailbox (previous versions of Exchange used a multi-
master public folder database replication strategy)

◦ JetStress – Simulate Exchange disk I/O load on a server to verify the performance and stability of your
disk subsystem before putting your server into a production environment.

recommendations.
◦ Exchange Server Role Requirements Calculator – Produces recommendations for sizing Exchange 2013
MB and CAS servers.
