Fossil fuels like coal and petroleum are nonrenewable energy resources that are commonly used to generate electricity or make products like gasoline and plastics by converting their chemical energy. Renewable resources such as solar, water, wind and geothermal can be replenished and include biomass from organic matter that can be burned as fuel.
