What is Packaging?
• Packaging can be defined as the general group
of activities in product planning which involves
designing and producing a container or wrapper
for a product
• It is usually done for the purpose of
transportation and storage
Purpose of Packaging
 Physical protection– The objects enclosed
in the package may require protection from,
among other things, mechanical shock,
vibration, electrostatic discharge,
compression, temperature, etc.
• Convenience– Packages can have features that
add convenience in distribution, handling,
stacking, display, sale, opening, reclosing, use,
dispensing, reuse, recycling, and ease of disposal
Cont.
• Marketing– The packaging and labels can be
used by marketers to encourage potential
buyers to purchase the product. Package
graphic design and physical design have been
important and constantly evolving
phenomenon for several decades. Marketing
communications and graphic design are
applied to the surface of the package and (in
many cases) the point of sale display
INNOVATION
• Packaging Innovations
• For civilizations grew, the need to contain, protect, and
transport food supplies became critical. Primitive man
used vessels and containers made of natural materials
in form of tree leaves, bamboo, lotus leaves, palm
leaves, gourds, coconut shells, shells and animal skin.
• Later on, as minerals, ores and chemicals were
discovered, metals and pottery were developed leading
to use of new materials including fabrics, ceramics,
metals, lacquerware, wood ware, jade ware, and
certain types of paper. Steam engines marked the
beginning of Industrial Revolution.
Challenges and innovation in packaging
Around the world, liquid foods are sold in a broad
variety of packaging shapes, sizes and materials.
The chart below shows what brand owners are
currently choosing globally across all non-carbonated
drink categories, excluding water.
Challenges And Drivers
• The main challenge is to minimize waste and
energy, optimize the handling process and
create maximum recycling and up-cycling
opportunities along the way.
PACKAGING-Factors for consider
Due to some regulatory measures of governing bodies
and authorities, some of the factors that
manufacturers consider these days for packaging are –
• Use of packaging material made from recyclable,
reusable or bio-degradable material.
• The label on the package is provided with information
regarding the ingredients used. The package labels now
days are generally accompanied by detailed
instructions for proper use to maximize the
performance and minimize wastage.
11
PACKAGING-Factors for consider
The selection of products and materials for packaging and when export the
goods ,depends on the consideration of several factors, which include
- product compatibility and stability
- Mode of transport
- cost
- package safety
- solid waste impact
- Security
- Wood packaging requirements
- Food and perishable goods
12
TYPES OF PACKAGING
• Primary packaging is the material that first
envelops the product and hold it. This usually
is the smallest unit of distribution or use and
is the package which is in direct contact with
the contents.
13
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRIMARY
PACKAGING
• Ampoules
• Vials
• Containers
• Syringe
• Strip packages
• Blister packaging
• Closures (plastic, metal)
14
DIFFERENT TYPES OF SECONDARY
PACKAGING
• Paper and board
• Cartons
• Corrugated fibers
• Box manufacture
