This document is a project report submitted by a student to the University of Mumbai on the challenges faced by the automobile industries. It begins with an introduction describing the rapidly growing automobile market in India due to rising incomes and government reforms. It then provides a brief history of the automobile industry in India, which was previously dominated by two outdated models until economic liberalization in the 1990s allowed more foreign participation. The report proceeds to describe the top four automobile assemblers in India - Maruti Suzuki, Premier Automobiles, Hindustan Motors, and Tata Motors - and their respective market shares, products, joint ventures and competitive positions.
