- 2. Coping with Loneliness Solitude is the pleasurable, preferable experience of being alone. Loneliness is the painful, undesired experience of aloneness. Stay in touch with family and friends and go seeking new friendships. Many times people let themselves become lonely and neglect the many ways they could add love and meaning to their lives.
- 3. Being a Single Adult Single adults commonly complain that they don’t know how to meet people. They let themselves become lonely and neglect the many ways they could add love and meaning to their lives. They view being single as a “holding pattern” until they can find someone to marry.
- 4. Living Together Living together before marriage is not a new idea. Occurred in Western Civilization. Discarded long ago because it caused personal and social problems. St. Augustine condemned unmarried couples living together. He experienced living together before marriage and learned its problems the hard way.
- 5. Living Together Church disapproves living together. However, concubinage was practiced during the medieval times by laity and clergy. Concubinage – living together with an exclusive partner. Some viewed as form of marriage. Can be compared to common-law marriages. Laity – persons who are not members of the clergy.
- 6. Living Together The Church and society became lesser tolerant of people cohabiting. Cohabiting – living together as a couple without being married. Left women and children abandoned without legal recourse for financial support when the live-in father left the family.

- 8. Why Couples Live Together Single women from unhappy family backgrounds tend to cohabit for security. College life seems overwhelming which causes loneliness and people to cohabit.
- 9. Why Couples Live Together Problems that arise when people live together: More females support live-in-partners than males which leads to jealousy and feelings of being used. More violence occurs in live-in relationships than marriage. Occurs in 1/3 of these relationships. One person expects/endures more than another person. More likely to develop depression and be unhappy if treated poorly
- 10. The Effect on Personal Happiness Living together is not good preparation for marriage. Does not insure compatibility or increase success in marriage. Causes unresolved conflicts after marriage. Show less respect towards their spouse than married couples who did not live together. Vast majority of these relationships do not last. Tend to emphasize self-fulfillment and self-interest more. Disregard religious, family, and social traditions.
- 11. The Effect on Personal Happiness Individuals continue these live-in relationships. Continue to experience broken hearts and shattered expectations. Strongly committed married couples know it takes strength and determination to get through life’s challenges.
