All About Matter
What is Matter?Matter is the stuff around youAnything made of atoms and moleculesAnything that has mass
What are Elements? The building blocks of matterCannot be broken down into another substanceImage from - http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/biology/human-periodic-table.gif
AtomsThe smallest particle of an element that has the properties of the element
Parts of an AtomNucleus – the center of an atomProton – particle of an atom that has a positive chargeNeutron – particle of an atom that has no chargeElectron – particle of an atom that has a negative charge
What is a Molecule? Two or more atoms joined together
CompoundA substance made up of atoms of more than one element joined together in a molecule
Compare Compounds and MoleculesAll compounds are molecules but not all molecules are compounds.Example - O2 and N2 are molecules (not compounds) because they have a single elementExample - H2O and CO2 are compounds (and molecules) because they are made from more than one element.
MixtureTwo or more substances that are mixed together, but can be separated out because their atoms are not combined
SolutionA mixture in which substances break up into their most basic particleAre too small to be seenSpread evenly through another substance.
Physical Properties	The characteristics of an object that you can observe with your senses or measure.Hardness-How hard or soft is it?Texture-What is its surface like?Mass-How heavy is it?Elasticity-How much will it stretch or bend before breaking?Odor-What does it smell like?Magnetism-It it magnetic?Melting Point-At what temperature will it melt or freeze?
States of MatterSolid It has a definite shape. It has a definite mass. It has a definite volume.
States of MatterLiquidIt does not have a definite shape. It has a definite mass. It has a definite volume.
States of MatterGasIt does not have a definite shape. It does not have a definite mass. It does not have a definite volume.
Physical ChangeA change in any physical properties of a substance, not in the substance itself.
Sometimes its Difficult to TellAsk Yourself:“Do I have the same substance that I started with?”If yes, then the changes it underwent were all physical changes.
Chemical PropertiesDescribes the way a substance reacts with other substances and changes into a new substance, either by combining with other elements or breaking apart into a new substance.
Sometimes its Difficult to TellChemical properties are not as easy to observe aphysical properties.Observe chemical properties when a substance is being changed.Examples:Wood burning Iron rusting
Chemical ChangeA change of one substance into another substanceWood Asheshttp://www.stovesonline.co.uk/stove/img/wood-burning.jpghttp://urbangardenproject.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/wood-ashes-00.jpg
