This document provides instructions for an experiment where students observe the changes of state that ice cubes undergo when placed upside down on a metal lid over a jar of hot water. Students are instructed to place three ice cubes inside the inverted lid and observe and record any changes over ten minutes. They then remove the lid to observe condensation on the underside and draw and label a diagram of the phase change process of melting, evaporation and condensation.

- 1. Changes of state (Remembering) In groups of 4 or 5 Materials: Ice cubes, a kettle, a jar with a metal lid, a worksheet for students . Procedure: Put some hot water in the jar. (The teacher does) Turn the metal lid upside down and place on top of the jar. Place three ice cubes inside of the lid. Write anything and everything you notice for the next ten minutes. After about five minutes, take the lid off and observe the underside. Write your observations. Draw a diagram of the process and label: LIQUID, GAS, SOLID, EVAPORATION, CONDENSATION and MELTING
