- 2. Tools Needed: Service manual for the vehicle being serviced; suitable lift for vehicle; oil drain equipment; waste oil storage facility; oil filter recycling facility; oil filter wrench.
- 3. Safety Precautions: store waste oil and filters in the proper containers. Dispose of the waste oil and oil filters properly. These are considered hazardous waste materials. Always wear safety glasses when working on a vehicle.
- 4. Information: This is a general procedure for changing the vehicle’s engine oil and oil filters. This is a recommended preventive maintenance practice. It is recommended that the engine oil and filter be changed at the same time and generally at a 6000 mile or less interval based on the vehicle manufacturer, severity of the use of the vehicle, and the quality of oil that is used..
- 5. • Bring the engine to full operating temperature. • Locate the proper draining and recycling equipment.
- 6. Place vehicle on the appropriate lift or jack stands.
- 8. Drain oil from engine into proper receptacle.
- 10. Install new oil filter. Prior to installation of the new oil filter, put your finger in the new oil and then run your finger around the rubber oil filter gasket. This will help create a nice leak-proof seal.
- 11. Replace oil drain plug and clean oil from the area.
- 12. Install the proper oil in the proper quantity.
- 13. • Start engine and let idle, notice the oil pressure indicator indicates oil pressure. • Check for oil leaks at the oil drain plug and the oil filter.
- 14. Turn engine off, check the oil dipstick for the proper oil level.
- 15. • Clean any spilled oil with the proper equipment and materials. • Remove vehicle from lift of jack stands.
