Chapter 8 PresentationFrank LemondBiology 1207/4/10
I. HERNIOPLASTYHERNIOPLASTY is the surgical repair of a hernia, sometimes specifically that using a mesh patch or plug for reinforcement. It is the surgical correction of a hernia. It is also the surgical repair of a hernia, with reconstruction of tissue.
II. EXTRACTIONA dental extraction (also known as exodontia) is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extractions are performed for a wide variety of reasons, including tooth decay that has destroyed enough tooth structure to prevent restoration. Extractions of impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are routinely performed, as are extractions of some permanent teeth to make space for orthodontic treatment.
III. ANASTOMOSISAnastomosis is the linkage of 2 structures. It refers to connections between blood vessels or between other tubular structures, like loops of intestine. In circulatory anastomosis, many arteries naturally anastomose with each other, for example the lower epigastric artery and the upper epigastric artery. The circular anastomosis is further divided into arterial and venous anastomosis.
III. ANASTOMOSIS (cont’d)Arterial anastomosis includes actual arterial anastomosis (e.g. palmar arch, plantar arch) and potential arterial anastomosis (e.g. coronary arteries and cortical branch of cerebral arteries). An example of surgical anastomosis occurs when a segment of intestine is resected & the 2 remaining ends are sewn or stapled together (anastomosed), for example Roux-en-Y anastomosis. The procedure is referred to as intestinal anastomosis.
IV. CHOLEDOCHOLITHOTRIPSYCHOLEDOCHOLITHOTRIPSY is the crushing or fragmentation of a gallstone in the common bile duct by manipulation without opening of the duct.
