and C , Calcium , manganese , amino acids ,Protein and etc . Malunggay can be a
treatment in prostate and skin cancer , rheumatism , arthritis , and joint pains .
Ampalaya (Momordica Charantia) also known as bitter melon and bitter gourd is
a tropical and subtropical vine in the family of Cucurbaceace . It is widely grown in the
Amazon , Carribean and Southeast Asia such as Philippines for its edible fruit .
Ampalaya or bitter gourd as the name implies its bitter taste due to the presence of
momordicin , and believed to be the most bitter of all vegetables . It is a climbing vine
that grows up to 5m , with up to 20cm long . The leaves are heart shaped 5-10cm
across , cut into 5-7 lobes . Ampalaya bears fleshy green fruit , oblong shaped with
pointed ends , ribbed and wrinkled bursting when mature to release seeds . Ampalaya
seeds are flat with reminated margins . Ampalaya leaves and fruits are excellent source
of Vitamin B , iron , calcium , betacarotene and phosphorous .It has been a folkloric
cure for generations but has now been proven to be an effective herbal medicine for
many ailments . Ampalaya is used as herbal treatment for diabetes , HIV , coughs , skin
disease , sterility in women , heal wounds, antipycrtic , treat stomach problems such as
colitis , dysentery and intestinal parasite .The Philippine Department of Health has
endorsed Ampalaya for an alternative medicine for liver problems . Ampalaya known
for increases the production of Beta cells by the Pancreas , improving body’s ability to
produce insulin , that controls the blood sugar for diabetics . It helps to lower down the
blood sugar level .

Theoretical Framework
Ampalaya also known as Bitter melon has been used in various Asian
and African herbal medicine systems for a long time.In Turkey, it has been used as a
folk remedy for a variety of ailments, particularly stomach complaints. In traditional
medicine of India different parts of the plant are used to relieve diabetes, as
a stomachic, laxative, antibilious, emetic, anthelmintic agent, for the treatment of cough,
respiratory diseases, skin diseases, wounds, ulcer, gout, and rheumatism.
According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Momordica
charantia has a number of uses that are thought to be beneficial; including cancer
prevention, treatment of diabetes, fever, HIV and AIDS, and infections.
With regard to the use of Momordica charantia for diabetes, several animal
studies and small scale human studies have demonstrated a hypoglycemic effect of
concentrated bitter melon extracts. In addition, a 2014 review shows evidence
that Momordica charantia, when consumed in raw or juice form, can be efficacious in
lowering blood glucose levels.Contrary to this evidence, multiple reviews have found
that Momordica charantia does not significantly decrease fasting blood glucose levels
or A1c, indicators of blood glucose control, when taken
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City
in capsule or tablet form Momordica charantia may be beneficial in diabetes, however
the effects seem to depend on how it is consumed.More studies need to be performed
in order to verify this effect.
The malunggay plant is known to different parts of the world under various
names including, but not limited to, horseradish tree, drumstick tree, and dool in some
regions. It is one of the more popular and publicized plant that is acknowledged to have
nutritional, as well as, medicinal value. It is rich in vitamins A, B & C, minerals such as
iron and amino acids. Fortunately, the plant is easily accessible as it can be found not
only as part of the wild life, but also in the backyards of many Filipino homes.
Malunggay proves to be a low-maintenance plant to grow, and is able to propagate in
almost all kinds of soil. Most of the parts of the malunggay had been proven to be
useful, both for consumption and for its preparation as a medicinal plant. Its flowers,
leaves and young pods are associated and perceived to be important because of
the health benefits that it provides.
The malunggay plant, which belongs to the Moringaceae family, can grow as
high as nine meters. The bark of this tree has a gummy quality in it, and when peered
closely, is comprised of white wood that is soft in nature. It derives one of its names,
horseradish, from the taste of its roots. The malunggay leaves, which are used in
certain Filipino viands, have a very distinct shape that makes it easily recognizable.
They are circular, thin sheets that are attached to a main stalk. The malunggay flowers
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City
are white fragrances that produce the pods, which are also used for medicinal
purposes.
There are various parts of the malunggay plant which are being used for
health reasons. For one, the leaves of this plant proved to be a good source of calcium,
iron, ascorbic acid and phosphorus. Its other parts such as the seeds, the young pods,
and the flowers have been established to benefit individuals as far as anti-oxidant, anti-
diabetic, circulatory stimulations, and such other activities that are most beneficial to
mankind, are concerned. There have been claims that malunggay can be used to lower
blood pressure, aid in pains caused by rheumatism, headaches and migraines, as well
as its being an anti-tumor plant. Malunggay is also used for purgative and anti-fungal
purposes, as well. All these prove the claim that this plant is indeed multi-purpose.
Scope and Delimitation
The scope of this research was the acceptance of ice cream made from
ampalaya-malunggay to freshmen students in Valenzuela City Polytechnic College. The
research will be limited to persons who have allergies.

Review of Related Studies and Literature
This chapter includes some related literature and studies of foreign and local studies
regarding to Ampalaya and Malunggay.
Local Study
Ampalaya, also known as Bitter Melon, is a crawling vine that grows well in
tropical countries, particularly in the Philippines. The term Ampalaya refers to both the
plant and its fruit, which is elongated, green and has a rough and rumpled skin. Known
for its bitter taste, the Ampalaya is at once a staple ingredient in Filipino and Asian
cuisine and a reliable home remedy for various illnesses, particularly diabetes.
Ampalaya has long been a popular part of many Asian vegetable dishes. Though
notorious for its bitter taste, Ampalaya is rich in iron, potassium, beta-carotene and
other nutrients. But aside from its role as a healthy food, Ampalaya is especially valued
by diabetics for its known anti-diabetes properties. The traditional remedy is made by
pounding the raw fruits of Ampalaya into a bitter liquid, or by boiling the leaves and fruits
for a few minutes; the resulting water then drank as a herbal tea.
“Ampalaya fruit prepared as a tea is well- tolerated and may be a useful dietary
adjunct in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. It has minor gastrointestinal side effects of
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City
increased bowel frequency but beneficial to those diabetic patients who are
constipated.” According to R. Rosales, MD and R. Fernando, MD
At once a popular nutritious vegetable and a medicinal herb, the Ampalaya is
both traditionally accepted and scientifically cited to help lower elevated blood sugar
levels. Over the past four decades, pre-clinical and limited clinical studies worldwide
tend to confirm this benefit. Researchers have identified key compounds, such
as charantin, vicine, peptides and polypeptide-p, a plant insulin, which are thought to be
behind the herb’s blood sugar-lowering properties.
“It is therefore concluded based on a review of available literature that pre-
clinical studies showed that extracts of the leaves and fruits of Momordica charantia
Linn. Increase glucose tolerance and potentiate insulin and other anti-diabetic drugs.”-

“Malunggay” in the Philippines, “Sajina” in the Indian Subcontinent, and“Moringa”
in English,it is a popular tree. Many Asians use the leaves of Malunggay(Sajina) like
spinach and also the fruit it produces as a vegetable, like asparagus. It onlyused to be
known as a vegetable for lactating mothers. But new scientific studies say
thatmalunggay has medicinal and market possibilities.Touted by scientists as a “miracle
vegetable,” malunggay has been promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for
the past 20 years as a low-cost healthenhancer in poor countries around the

globe.Malunggay trees are generally grown in the backyards. The small, oval, dark-
green leaves are famous vegetable ingredient in soup, fish and chicken dishes.Sc
ientifically, called „Moringa oleifera.‟ this vegetable, despite its legendary potentials, is
still relatively unknown.
“The sale of all forms of vitamins, minerals, and health supplements is a
big business,” points out Moringa Zinga, an American company that promotes and sells
malunggay products in capsules. “If you are a company selling hundreds of nutriti
onal products, why would you sell a product that will wipe out all your other products?
This istrue for the pharmaceutical industries as well. These industries affect the general
public toremainignorant about the moringa leaves.” According to the Biotechnology
Program Office of the Department of Agriculture, the malunggay has been found by
biochemists and molecular anthropologiststo be rich in vitamins C and A, iron, and high
density lipoprotein or good cholesterol.Due to its high calcium content (four times the
calcium in milk), lactating mothersin the Philippines are often advised to consume
malunggay leaves to produce more milk for their babies. The young malunggay leaves
are being boiled and drink as tea.Malunggay leaves are loaded with nutrients. Gram for
gram, malunggay leavesalso contain two times the protein in milk. Likewise, it contains
three times the potassiumin bananas and four times the vitamin A in carrots.Health
nutritionists claim that an ounce of malunggay has the same Vitamin Ccontent as seven
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

oranges. An important function of vitamin C not known to many is
its being an antioxidant. In fact, it has been recognized and accepted by the US Food a
ndDrug Administration as one of the four dietary antioxidants, the others being
vitaminE, betacarotene and selenium. (A dietary oxidant is a substance in food that sign
ificantlydecreases the adverse effects of harmful chemicals). There are more health
benefits. Vivencio Mamaril, of the Bureau of PlantIndustry, told a national daily that in
India, malunggay is used in treating variousailments. A 2001 study in India has found
that the fresh root of the young tree can beused to treat fever. Asthmatics are advised to
drink the infusion from the roots of the plant.
Tender malunggay leaves also reduce phlegm and are administered internally
for scurvy and catarrhal conditions, while the flowers are used to heal inflammation of
thetendons and abscesses. Unripe pods of malunggay are also reported to prevent
intestinalworms, while the fruit also prevents eye disorders.Other studies have shown
that eating malunggay fruits can lead to higher semencount. This is good news for men
who are having problems in siring children. They cannow count on the malunggay to
cork its magic on them.Because of its nutritional content, malunggay strengthens the
immune system, restores skin condition, controls blood pressure, relieves headaches
and migraines, manages the sugar level thereby preventing diabetes, reduces
inflammations and arthritis pains, restricts the growth of tumors, and heals ulcers.

Science has proven that Ampalaya or Bitter Melon contains anti-diabetic
properties, transforming the raw fruits into a finished product may alter or diminish the
plant’s benefit through the manufacturing process. This study, which used
Charantia itself as the tea in subjects, confirms that our product has preserved health
benefits of Ampalaya. Every time you drink Charantia, rest assured you are taking in
100% Ampalaya goodness.
Ampalaya has the most documented scientific reports that cite its blood sugar-
lowering benefit. Research worldwide since the 1960s cites the plant’s key
compounds, notably polypeptide-P, a plant insulin known to lower blood sugar levels.
The plant’s insulin-like benefits have long-been enjoyed by many diabetics, who include
Ampalaya as part of their daily diet, either eaten as a vegetable or taken as a tea. With
the traditional use supported by modern scientific validation of the plant’s benefits, the
Ampalaya is the single most promising plant/herb for diabetes today.Philippine Journal
of Internal Medicine,

stemsfrom the fact that some Brits noticed the roots of this tree looked nearly identical

to real horseradish and they used it on their beef as a substitute for the sharp original
condiment - the two are not related at all. Besides the roots, the long ribbed pods or
"fruit" are edible and often used in Indian curries; though the skinis discarded and only
the pulp is sucked out in what is apparently a rather messy endeavor. The leaves are
also edible and apparently incredibly nutritious. Today, malunggay is consumed in huge
quantities every day across the archipelago. It is added to soups and provides excellent
nutritional points for every little money. A huge bunch of the market today was just PhP
5 or 10 U.S. cents and that's just for reference as we normally just ask for some leaves
from a neighbour, a house or two down the street. The leaves must be used almost
immediately after picking. Just throw them into the soup at the last minute or they will
overcook and even more slimy .

Ampalaya is dark green and looks a bit like a cucumber or zucchini with warts. A
member of the family Cucurbitaceae, momordicus is the Latin word for bitter.Charantia
species is the Greek word for “flower is beautiful”. Technically, this is a vegetable, but
some scholars call is as a fruit. Although it is mainly cultivated for medicinal and culinary
uses, it can also grow in the wild, like the Gulf Coast of the United States. Scientific
studies have shown that dried fruits, leaves and seeds of ampalaya was used in the
formulation of nutritional supplements, herbal teas and capsules to reduce blood sugar
levels in diabetics.
The solution to the problem of hunger and malnutrition lies in production of
Moringa Oleifera, more popularly known as malunggay. The "miracle vegetable," as
some scientists called it, has been promoted by no less than the World Health
Organization (WHO) as a low-cost health enhancer in poor countries around the globe.
The "natural nutrition for the tropics" is how the Florida-based Education Concerns for
Hunger Organization described malunggay.

"We have always had problems with the classical approach to treating
malnourished children," said a West Africa doctor in Senegal. "This was based on
industrial products: whole milk powder, vegetable oil and sugar. All these things are
expensive. When you tell a parent to go out and buy these things, this can be truly
costly for him."
Malunggay is so rich in nutrients and vitamins that its image is used as the official
logo of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of the Department of Science
and Technology. "If Manny Pacquiao shows how a Filipino fights in the ring," said one
commentator, "malunggay is the symbol of Filipino fight against malnutrition."
As malunggay is an excellent source of nutrition and a natural energy booster,
the Department of Agriculture (DA) promotes its massive cultivation in the country.
"Malunggay can save lives, increase incomes, generate millions of jobs, utilize vast
tracts of idle agricultural lands, make the Philippines globally competitive, impact local
and international market, and help attain socio-economic equity," pointed Alicia Ilaga,
director of DA's biotechnology program.Nutritionists aver that 100 grams of malunggay
leaves yield the following: 75 calories of energy (higher than ampalaya, squash,
tomatoes, or carrots), 5.9 grams protein (higher than cauliflower, lettuce, or mustard),
12.8 grams carbohydrate (higher than okra, papaya, or watermelon), 353 milligrams
calcium (higher than gabi leaves, mung beans, squash, and camote tops), 3.7
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City
milligrams niacin (higher than other vegetables analyzed). And for thiamin, phosphorus,
and ascorbic acid, malunggay is at the top of the list.
In addition, nutritionists affirm that 200 grams of malunggay leaves would give a
nutritive value roughly equivalent to four eggs and two glasses of milk. Its iron
compound prevents deficiency of red blood cells known as anemia. And being a very
rich source of calcium, it aids in maintaining healthy bones and teeth.Malunggay is also
rich in vitamin A (higher than red and green mung beans, radish, or eggplant), thus
helping prevent xerophthalmia, a disease of the eye.
Foreign Literature
The Ampalaya fruit is usually eaten while still green, because as the fruit ripens
its taste grows more bitter and much less tasty. During preparation, the seeds, which
turn from white to red over time, are removed. Removing the seeds helps to lessen the
bitterness. The skin is retained and proves to be soft and tender once cooked.Used as a
regular vegetable ingredient for many Asian dishes, the Ampalaya is also significant for
its well-documented blood sugar-lowering effect. Aside from being rich in fiber and
nutrients such as iron and potassium, several key compounds have been identified in
the fruit, notably charantin, vicine and polypeptide-p, a known plant insulin that
numerous pre-clinical studies and limited clinical trials have attributed to the plant’s
beneficial effects to blood sugar. Several supplements for diabetics have been
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City
developed using the Ampalaya, most notably an Ampalaya tea and capsules using the
dried Ampalaya fruit. As diabetes continues to rapidly spread across countries and social
strata, the Ampalaya is expected to provide diabetics with a safe and natural alternative
to help control their elevated sugar levels. While the herb is still rare in countries where
it is not indigenous, expect the Ampalaya and Ampalaya-based products to start gracing
local grocery shelves as more and more people realize its potential anti-diabetes use.
Health Food about ampalaya
Clinical Studies for Ampalaya Bitter Melon demonstrated hypoglycemic
properties (blood sugar lowering) or other actions of potential benefit against diabetes
mellitus. The hypoglycemic chemicals found in Ampalaya Bitter Melon include a mixture
of steroidal saponins known as charantins, insulin-like peptides, and alkaloids. The
hypoglycemic effect is more pronounced in the fruit of bitter melon where these
chemicals are in greater abundance. The fruit has also shown the ability to enhance
cells’ uptake of glucose, to promote insulin release, and potentiate the effect of insulin.
In other in vivo studies, bitter melon fruit and/or seed has been shown to reduce total
cholesterol and triglycerides in both the presence and absence of dietary cholesterol. In
one study, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in diabetic rats were returned to
normal after 10 weeks of treatment.Medical health guide

Ampalaya Supplement is famous food supplement derived from ampalaya plant
or the Momordica charantia plant or bitter gourd. This fruit is a rich source of vitamins
and minerals and is known for its bitter taste. The bitter taste of ampalaya makes it
difficult to eat to some people hence many people resort to taking the ampalaya
supplement to enjoy the nutritious benefits of the fruit without the bitter taste.
The ampalaya supplement has become popular because its manufacturers claim
that it is capable of treating different illnesses including cancer and diabetes. It is
believed to control diabetes because its bitter taste can counter the amount of blood
sugar. The ampalaya fruit per se is not known to treat or prevent diabetes more so the
ampalaya supplement. In other words, the ampalaya supplement and the ampalaya fruit
for that matter has no Approved Therapeutic Claims. No scientific study or evidence
show that ampalaya or the ampalaya supplement can prevent, mitigate or treat diabetes
or any other illnesses. All the claims made in the television commercials are at the
moment considered as a propaganda that misled people into believing that the bitter
gourd is a cure to diabetes.
While taking ampalaya supplements and capsules in not absolutely bad, what
makes it appalling is that its manufacturers mislead the people into believing that these
supplements can effectively cure diseases. In worst cases, some diabetic patients have
VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE

abandoned the prescribed medications of their physicians and absolutely relied on
ampalaya supplements to cure their sicknesses.Healthy Living Guide
Moringa oleifera (malunggay; horse radish tree) is one of the medicinal plants
popularly used in the Malaysia and Philippines. Products containing malunggay either
as single-component or in combination with Garcinia mangostina (mangosteen;
mangostana), Momordica charantia (ampalaya, bitter melon), Curcuma longa (luyang
dilaw, turmeric), Lagerstroemia speciosa (banaba; Pride of India), Vitex negundo
(lagundi; five-leaved chaste tree), silymarin, zinc, folic acid, taurine, and other active
ingredients are widely available in the Philippines.
These products are being sold mostly as capsule or health drink (tea). The
Philippine Food and Drug Administration approved these products as food supplements
with no approved therapeutic claims. A wide range of food products fortified with
malunggay and cosmetics containing malunggay is also now available in the Philippine
market.Anecdotal evidence of benefits from malunggay has fueled a recent increase in
adoption of and attention to its many healing effects. Malunggay is now being heavily
promoted in the Philippines as a powerful energy booster and a cure for a wide range of
disease conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, bacterial infections, skin
problems, and arthritis. Due to its various purported health benefits, malunggay is even
being promoted as ‘miracle tree’ or ‘super health food’.

This is very alarming as most of the claimed therapeutic effects of these products
are only based from animal or in vitro studies and from folkloric use. These products
may only give a false sense of cure to the patients, and in some situation may even
result to untoward events that could endanger their lives. Furthermore, their use
becomes an additional financial burden, as majority of these products are very
expensive.A wider information drive should be initiated to safeguard both the health
professionals and the patients. Objective and up-to-date scientific information on these
products should be made readily available to let them understand that the body of
scientific evidence supporting the claimed health benefits for these products is weak,
and warn them on the dangers of using these products as substitute for mainstream
therapy. Moringa oleifera: A Review of the Medical Evidence for Its Nutritional,

The output includes the Acceptability of Ice Cream made from Ampalaya-Malunggay to our respondents. Theoretical Framework Ampalaya also known as Bitter melon has been used in various Asian and African herbal medicine systems for a long time.In Turkey, it has been used as a folk remedy for a variety of ailments, particularly stomach complaints. In traditional medicine of India different parts of the plant are used to relieve diabetes, as a stomachic, laxative, antibilious, emetic, anthelmintic agent, for the treatment of cough, respiratory diseases, skin diseases, wounds, ulcer, gout, and rheumatism. According to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Momordica charantia has a number of uses that are thought to be beneficial; including cancer prevention, treatment of diabetes, fever, HIV and AIDS, and infections. With regard to the use of Momordica charantia for diabetes, several animal studies and small scale human studies have demonstrated a hypoglycemic effect of concentrated bitter melon extracts. In addition, a 2014 review shows evidence that Momordica charantia, when consumed in raw or juice form, can be efficacious in lowering blood glucose levels.Contrary to this evidence, multiple reviews have found that Momordica charantia does not significantly decrease fasting blood glucose levels or A1c, indicators of blood glucose control, when taken
  • 8. VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City in capsule or tablet form Momordica charantia may be beneficial in diabetes, however the effects seem to depend on how it is consumed.More studies need to be performed in order to verify this effect. The malunggay plant is known to different parts of the world under various names including, but not limited to, horseradish tree, drumstick tree, and dool in some regions. It is one of the more popular and publicized plant that is acknowledged to have nutritional, as well as, medicinal value. It is rich in vitamins A, B & C, minerals such as iron and amino acids. Fortunately, the plant is easily accessible as it can be found not only as part of the wild life, but also in the backyards of many Filipino homes. Malunggay proves to be a low-maintenance plant to grow, and is able to propagate in almost all kinds of soil. Most of the parts of the malunggay had been proven to be useful, both for consumption and for its preparation as a medicinal plant. Its flowers, leaves and young pods are associated and perceived to be important because of the health benefits that it provides. The malunggay plant, which belongs to the Moringaceae family, can grow as high as nine meters. The bark of this tree has a gummy quality in it, and when peered closely, is comprised of white wood that is soft in nature. It derives one of its names, horseradish, from the taste of its roots. The malunggay leaves, which are used in certain Filipino viands, have a very distinct shape that makes it easily recognizable. They are circular, thin sheets that are attached to a main stalk. The malunggay flowers
  • 9. VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City are white fragrances that produce the pods, which are also used for medicinal purposes. There are various parts of the malunggay plant which are being used for health reasons. For one, the leaves of this plant proved to be a good source of calcium, iron, ascorbic acid and phosphorus. Its other parts such as the seeds, the young pods, and the flowers have been established to benefit individuals as far as anti-oxidant, anti- diabetic, circulatory stimulations, and such other activities that are most beneficial to mankind, are concerned. There have been claims that malunggay can be used to lower blood pressure, aid in pains caused by rheumatism, headaches and migraines, as well as its being an anti-tumor plant. Malunggay is also used for purgative and anti-fungal purposes, as well. All these prove the claim that this plant is indeed multi-purpose. Scope and Delimitation The scope of this research was the acceptance of ice cream made from ampalaya-malunggay to freshmen students in Valenzuela City Polytechnic College. The research will be limited to persons who have allergies.

VI Parada, Valenzuela City Chapter 2 Review of Related Studies and Literature This chapter includes some related literature and studies of foreign and local studies regarding to Ampalaya and Malunggay. Local Study Ampalaya, also known as Bitter Melon, is a crawling vine that grows well in tropical countries, particularly in the Philippines. The term Ampalaya refers to both the plant and its fruit, which is elongated, green and has a rough and rumpled skin. Known for its bitter taste, the Ampalaya is at once a staple ingredient in Filipino and Asian cuisine and a reliable home remedy for various illnesses, particularly diabetes. Ampalaya has long been a popular part of many Asian vegetable dishes. Though notorious for its bitter taste, Ampalaya is rich in iron, potassium, beta-carotene and other nutrients. But aside from its role as a healthy food, Ampalaya is especially valued by diabetics for its known anti-diabetes properties. The traditional remedy is made by pounding the raw fruits of Ampalaya into a bitter liquid, or by boiling the leaves and fruits for a few minutes; the resulting water then drank as a herbal tea. “Ampalaya fruit prepared as a tea is well- tolerated and may be a useful dietary adjunct in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. It has minor gastrointestinal side effects of

Fernando, MD At once a popular nutritious vegetable and a medicinal herb, the Ampalaya is both traditionally accepted and scientifically cited to help lower elevated blood sugar levels. Over the past four decades, pre-clinical and limited clinical studies worldwide tend to confirm this benefit. Researchers have identified key compounds, such as charantin, vicine, peptides and polypeptide-p, a plant insulin, which are thought to be behind the herb’s blood sugar-lowering properties. “It is therefore concluded based on a review of available literature that pre- clinical studies showed that extracts of the leaves and fruits of Momordica charantia Linn. Increase glucose tolerance and potentiate insulin and other anti-diabetic drugs.”- Dr. William D. Torres, Ph.D. former Director of the Philippine Bureau of Food and Drugs “Malunggay” in the Philippines, “Sajina” in the Indian Subcontinent, and“Moringa” in English,it is a popular tree. Many Asians use the leaves of Malunggay(Sajina) like spinach and also the fruit it produces as a vegetable, like asparagus. It onlyused to be known as a vegetable for lactating mothers. But new scientific studies say thatmalunggay has medicinal and market possibilities.Touted by scientists as a “miracle vegetable,” malunggay has been promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the past 20 years as a low-cost healthenhancer in poor countries around the

The small, oval, dark- green leaves are famous vegetable ingredient in soup, fish and chicken dishes.Sc ientifically, called „Moringa oleifera.‟ this vegetable, despite its legendary potentials, is still relatively unknown. “The sale of all forms of vitamins, minerals, and health supplements is a big business,” points out Moringa Zinga, an American company that promotes and sells malunggay products in capsules. “If you are a company selling hundreds of nutriti onal products, why would you sell a product that will wipe out all your other products? This istrue for the pharmaceutical industries as well. These industries affect the general public toremainignorant about the moringa leaves.” According to the Biotechnology Program Office of the Department of Agriculture, the malunggay has been found by biochemists and molecular anthropologiststo be rich in vitamins C and A, iron, and high density lipoprotein or good cholesterol.Due to its high calcium content (four times the calcium in milk), lactating mothersin the Philippines are often advised to consume malunggay leaves to produce more milk for their babies. The young malunggay leaves are being boiled and drink as tea.Malunggay leaves are loaded with nutrients. Gram for gram, malunggay leavesalso contain two times the protein in milk. Likewise, it contains three times the potassiumin bananas and four times the vitamin A in carrots.Health nutritionists claim that an ounce of malunggay has the same Vitamin Ccontent as seven

In fact, it has been recognized and accepted by the US Food a ndDrug Administration as one of the four dietary antioxidants, the others being vitaminE, betacarotene and selenium. (A dietary oxidant is a substance in food that sign ificantlydecreases the adverse effects of harmful chemicals). There are more health benefits. Vivencio Mamaril, of the Bureau of PlantIndustry, told a national daily that in India, malunggay is used in treating variousailments. A 2001 study in India has found that the fresh root of the young tree can beused to treat fever. Asthmatics are advised to drink the infusion from the roots of the plant. Tender malunggay leaves also reduce phlegm and are administered internally for scurvy and catarrhal conditions, while the flowers are used to heal inflammation of thetendons and abscesses. Unripe pods of malunggay are also reported to prevent intestinalworms, while the fruit also prevents eye disorders.Other studies have shown that eating malunggay fruits can lead to higher semencount. This is good news for men who are having problems in siring children. They cannow count on the malunggay to cork its magic on them.Because of its nutritional content, malunggay strengthens the immune system, restores skin condition, controls blood pressure, relieves headaches and migraines, manages the sugar level thereby preventing diabetes, reduces inflammations and arthritis pains, restricts the growth of tumors, and heals ulcers.
  • 16. VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City This information comes from Dr.Kumar Pati, an Indian doctor who is an expert in natural medicine Local Literature Science has proven that Ampalaya or Bitter Melon contains anti-diabetic properties, transforming the raw fruits into a finished product may alter or diminish the plant’s benefit through the manufacturing process. This study, which used Charantia itself as the tea in subjects, confirms that our product has preserved health benefits of Ampalaya. Every time you drink Charantia, rest assured you are taking in 100% Ampalaya goodness. Ampalaya has the most documented scientific reports that cite its blood sugar- lowering benefit. Research worldwide since the 1960s cites the plant’s key compounds, notably polypeptide-P, a plant insulin known to lower blood sugar levels. The plant’s insulin-like benefits have long-been enjoyed by many diabetics, who include Ampalaya as part of their daily diet, either eaten as a vegetable or taken as a tea. With the traditional use supported by modern scientific validation of the plant’s benefits, the Ampalaya is the single most promising plant/herb for diabetes today.Philippine Journal of Internal Medicine, Malunggay is known as Horseradish Tree in English. The odd name stemsfrom the fact that some Brits noticed the roots of this tree looked nearly identical
  • 17. VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City to real horseradish and they used it on their beef as a substitute for the sharp original condiment - the two are not related at all. Besides the roots, the long ribbed pods or "fruit" are edible and often used in Indian curries; though the skinis discarded and only the pulp is sucked out in what is apparently a rather messy endeavor. The leaves are also edible and apparently incredibly nutritious. Today, malunggay is consumed in huge quantities every day across the archipelago. It is added to soups and provides excellent nutritional points for every little money. A huge bunch of the market today was just PhP 5 or 10 U.S. cents and that's just for reference as we normally just ask for some leaves from a neighbour, a house or two down the street. The leaves must be used almost immediately after picking. Just throw them into the soup at the last minute or they will overcook and even more slimy . The traditional remedy is made by pounding the raw fruits of Ampalaya into a bitter liquid, or by boiling the leaves and fruits for a few minutes, the resulting water then drank as a herbal tea. Ampalaya is dark green and looks a bit like a cucumber or zucchini with warts. A member of the family Cucurbitaceae, momordicus is the Latin word for bitter.Charantia species is the Greek word for “flower is beautiful”. Technically, this is a vegetable, but some scholars call is as a fruit. Although it is mainly cultivated for medicinal and culinary uses, it can also grow in the wild, like the Gulf Coast of the United States. Scientific studies have shown that dried fruits, leaves and seeds of ampalaya was used in the formulation of nutritional supplements, herbal teas and capsules to reduce blood sugar levels in diabetics. The solution to the problem of hunger and malnutrition lies in production of Moringa Oleifera, more popularly known as malunggay. The "miracle vegetable," as some scientists called it, has been promoted by no less than the World Health Organization (WHO) as a low-cost health enhancer in poor countries around the globe. The "natural nutrition for the tropics" is how the Florida-based Education Concerns for Hunger Organization described malunggay.
  • 19. VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City "We have always had problems with the classical approach to treating malnourished children," said a West Africa doctor in Senegal. "This was based on industrial products: whole milk powder, vegetable oil and sugar. All these things are expensive. When you tell a parent to go out and buy these things, this can be truly costly for him." Malunggay is so rich in nutrients and vitamins that its image is used as the official logo of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology. "If Manny Pacquiao shows how a Filipino fights in the ring," said one commentator, "malunggay is the symbol of Filipino fight against malnutrition." As malunggay is an excellent source of nutrition and a natural energy booster, the Department of Agriculture (DA) promotes its massive cultivation in the country. "Malunggay can save lives, increase incomes, generate millions of jobs, utilize vast tracts of idle agricultural lands, make the Philippines globally competitive, impact local and international market, and help attain socio-economic equity," pointed Alicia Ilaga, director of DA's biotechnology program.Nutritionists aver that 100 grams of malunggay leaves yield the following: 75 calories of energy (higher than ampalaya, squash, tomatoes, or carrots), 5.9 grams protein (higher than cauliflower, lettuce, or mustard), 12.8 grams carbohydrate (higher than okra, papaya, or watermelon), 353 milligrams calcium (higher than gabi leaves, mung beans, squash, and camote tops), 3.7
  • 20. VALENZUELA CITY POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE Kamagong St., Fort. Vill. VI Parada, Valenzuela City milligrams niacin (higher than other vegetables analyzed). And for thiamin, phosphorus, and ascorbic acid, malunggay is at the top of the list. In addition, nutritionists affirm that 200 grams of malunggay leaves would give a nutritive value roughly equivalent to four eggs and two glasses of milk. Its iron compound prevents deficiency of red blood cells known as anemia. And being a very rich source of calcium, it aids in maintaining healthy bones and teeth.Malunggay is also rich in vitamin A (higher than red and green mung beans, radish, or eggplant), thus helping prevent xerophthalmia, a disease of the eye. Foreign Literature The Ampalaya fruit is usually eaten while still green, because as the fruit ripens its taste grows more bitter and much less tasty. During preparation, the seeds, which turn from white to red over time, are removed. Removing the seeds helps to lessen the bitterness. The skin is retained and proves to be soft and tender once cooked.Used as a regular vegetable ingredient for many Asian dishes, the Ampalaya is also significant for its well-documented blood sugar-lowering effect. Aside from being rich in fiber and nutrients such as iron and potassium, several key compounds have been identified in the fruit, notably charantin, vicine and polypeptide-p, a known plant insulin that numerous pre-clinical studies and limited clinical trials have attributed to the plant’s beneficial effects to blood sugar. Several supplements for diabetics have been

While the herb is still rare in countries where it is not indigenous, expect the Ampalaya and Ampalaya-based products to start gracing local grocery shelves as more and more people realize its potential anti-diabetes use. Health Food about ampalaya Clinical Studies for Ampalaya Bitter Melon demonstrated hypoglycemic properties (blood sugar lowering) or other actions of potential benefit against diabetes mellitus. The hypoglycemic chemicals found in Ampalaya Bitter Melon include a mixture of steroidal saponins known as charantins, insulin-like peptides, and alkaloids. The hypoglycemic effect is more pronounced in the fruit of bitter melon where these chemicals are in greater abundance. The fruit has also shown the ability to enhance cells’ uptake of glucose, to promote insulin release, and potentiate the effect of insulin. In other in vivo studies, bitter melon fruit and/or seed has been shown to reduce total cholesterol and triglycerides in both the presence and absence of dietary cholesterol. In one study, elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels in diabetic rats were returned to normal after 10 weeks of treatment.Medical health guide

VI Parada, Valenzuela City Ampalaya Supplement is famous food supplement derived from ampalaya plant or the Momordica charantia plant or bitter gourd. This fruit is a rich source of vitamins and minerals and is known for its bitter taste. The bitter taste of ampalaya makes it difficult to eat to some people hence many people resort to taking the ampalaya supplement to enjoy the nutritious benefits of the fruit without the bitter taste. The ampalaya supplement has become popular because its manufacturers claim that it is capable of treating different illnesses including cancer and diabetes. It is believed to control diabetes because its bitter taste can counter the amount of blood sugar. The ampalaya fruit per se is not known to treat or prevent diabetes more so the ampalaya supplement. In other words, the ampalaya supplement and the ampalaya fruit for that matter has no Approved Therapeutic Claims. No scientific study or evidence show that ampalaya or the ampalaya supplement can prevent, mitigate or treat diabetes or any other illnesses. All the claims made in the television commercials are at the moment considered as a propaganda that misled people into believing that the bitter gourd is a cure to diabetes. While taking ampalaya supplements and capsules in not absolutely bad, what makes it appalling is that its manufacturers mislead the people into believing that these supplements can effectively cure diseases. In worst cases, some diabetic patients have

Products containing malunggay either as single-component or in combination with Garcinia mangostina (mangosteen; mangostana), Momordica charantia (ampalaya, bitter melon), Curcuma longa (luyang dilaw, turmeric), Lagerstroemia speciosa (banaba; Pride of India), Vitex negundo (lagundi; five-leaved chaste tree), silymarin, zinc, folic acid, taurine, and other active ingredients are widely available in the Philippines. These products are being sold mostly as capsule or health drink (tea). The Philippine Food and Drug Administration approved these products as food supplements with no approved therapeutic claims. A wide range of food products fortified with malunggay and cosmetics containing malunggay is also now available in the Philippine market.Anecdotal evidence of benefits from malunggay has fueled a recent increase in adoption of and attention to its many healing effects. Malunggay is now being heavily promoted in the Philippines as a powerful energy booster and a cure for a wide range of disease conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, cancer, bacterial infections, skin problems, and arthritis. Due to its various purported health benefits, malunggay is even being promoted as ‘miracle tree’ or ‘super health food’.

VI Parada, Valenzuela City This is very alarming as most of the claimed therapeutic effects of these products are only based from animal or in vitro studies and from folkloric use. These products may only give a false sense of cure to the patients, and in some situation may even result to untoward events that could endanger their lives. Furthermore, their use becomes an additional financial burden, as majority of these products are very expensive.A wider information drive should be initiated to safeguard both the health professionals and the patients. Objective and up-to-date scientific information on these products should be made readily available to let them understand that the body of scientific evidence supporting the claimed health benefits for these products is weak, and warn them on the dangers of using these products as substitute for mainstream therapy.
