Chapter I
Introduction
Some acknowledge the benefits of Greek organizations for both the individuals who
participate in them and for the institution. A fraternity or sorority can provide a caring and
supportive subcommunity where students develop interpersonal and leadership skills
(Baquilid, 2014), make friends, learn how an organization works, develop a common cause,
participate in community service, and have fun (Kokemuller, 2016). At the same time,
fraternities and sororities are under fire for behavior that is seen as antithetical to both the
goals of higher education and to the ideals upon which the national organizations were
founded. Many question the compatibility of Greek organizations with the academy’s
educational purposes, values, and attitudes. In particular, Greek organizations are
questioned for organizational practices that promote status distinction, reinforce
conformity and social apathy, and denigrate individual worth and dignity. Incidents of
alcohol abuse, hazing, sexual assault, and poor academic performance are often the focus
of media attention.
A fraternity exists on the premise that a man is by nature a social being and needs
the companionship with his fellow man. It also provides a structure, and an environment
in which close friendships can flourish, bringing each of the fraternity members closer to
themselves. It is by no means the only organization in which a student might mature and
develop lifelong friends. Just one of the many in which minds are shaped and imaginations
flourish within its settings.
It is not unlike any other human institution, it encourages it’s members to make a
commitment to something outside themselves, such as participating in charity events,
events to benefit the homeless, raise money for the poor and commit themselves to learn
about one another. Student’s commitments to a fraternity, provides a structure within where
these commitments can be acted out, in such things as rituals of pledging and initiation. A
ritual is only one way of expressing a fraternities ideals and aspirations. The organizations
name, tradition, and history carries much symbolic importance to all who are a part of it.
One of the benefits of joining fraternity is to enhance the members’ leadership skills
and abilities. For instance, During the retreat, leaders of the fraternity and sorority
community will participate in team building exercises, small group facilitation discussions
as well as participate in large group conversations. The goal of the retreat is to get
community members to better understand the current state of the community and begin to
understand how they can create change and become better values based leaders.
Conversely, there are also negative effects of it to the students. First, is the ritual
most people connect with negative outcomes in fraternities is hazing. It refers to the
initiation rituals, customs or traditions new pledges must be a part of in order to join.
Hazing practices have caused deaths and injuries after fraternity leaders subjected pledges
to dangerous tasks like binge drinking, locking them in enclosed spaces or asking them to
perform risky physical stunts. They are not only dangerous to the individuals who must
perform them, but they also compromise the reputation and integrity of the fraternity as a
whole.
Second is alcohol consumption most fraternities are also known for being
gatekeepers of the alcohol supply on campus. Underage students know they can drink at
fraternity parties, which are usually hosted at fraternity housing. By offering underage
students access to alcohol, fraternities promote illegal drinking, which often leads to
hospitalizations for alcohol poisoning or alcohol-induced injuries. While some fraternities
try to keep underage students out of their parties, many don't check ID's and will allow
even high school students to attend -- especially underage girls. This also results to
misbevior of the students. And lastly, it has a consequence to the students academic
performance because most fraternities needs time commitment
Background of the Study
A fraternity exists on the premise that a man is by nature a
social being and needs the companionship with his fellow man. People join organizations
for many reasons they want to get involved, meet people, make new friends, explore
interests, develop leadership skills and have fun. Groups needs new members because they
bring new ideas and talents.
However, due to the incidents of members involving in different crimes such as
hazing, alcohol abuse and misbehavior people think that joining fraternities is dangerous
or worse can cause death to another person. Due to this there are misconception about
fraternities to the point that when they hear the word “frat” what comes to their mind it is
a bad thing not knowing there are also positive effects of it.
In order to enlightens the mind of everyone the researcher conducted this study to
focus on the values and mission: service, leadership, relationships, and reasons of each
member. To provides opportunities for development, promotes persistence, more
interaction with peers, and to find a meaningful involvement in campus organizations as a
contributor to student development, growth, and success. For many students, fraternity or
sorority membership provides such meaningful involvement.
Scope and Delimitation
This study will be conducted in San Miguel National High School located in San
Miguel Leyte. It is only delimited to the students who are members or affiliated to
fraternities. There are total of 100 respondents that are chosen in the population. The
researcher will be using Simple Random Sampling, 50 respondents to those who are
members or affiliated to fraternities and 50 respondents to those who are not members or
affiliated to compare which of the both are affected negatively and positively.
Significance if the Study
The findings of this study were beneficial or important to the following people:
First are the teachers, this will provide ideas about the behavior and skills that the students
adopted. Next, parents, this will give insights on how they can exhibit responsibilities to
their children and how can they prevent them in fostering bad attitudes. And lastly, is to
the future researcher it will provide basis for the conduction of future research about the
effects of joining fraternities and possibly on a wider involving other areas or variables.
Because of this it will help them understand the reasons for joining fraternities and to be
able to help them cope up with their individual problems and concerns.
Sampling
Data was collected from a randomly selected sample of a total of 100 Grade 10
students, randomly selected 50 respondents to those who are members or affiliated to
fraternities and randomly selected 50 respondents to those who are not members or
affiliated, to compare which of the both are affected negatively and positively. It was
collected in San Miguel National High School located in San Miguel, Leyte. The data for
the study will be collected by personal visits of the schools through conducting
standardized questionnaire for Grade 10 students. Since the researcher could not involve
all these adolescents, then there was the need for randomization for effectiveness and
efficiency in all the respondents who will answer to the questionnaire. The researcher will
also randomly select a sample of Grade 10 students who were not a member or affiliated
to any fraternities in order to compare both, to know if members of Greek letter can also
excel in class and who are affected negatively and positively.
Research Setting
The locality where the researcher conducts this study is in San Miguel, Leyte which
is 13 km far from Holy Trinity College.
Respondents
This study has a total of 100 respondents of Grade 10 students, a randomly selected
50 respondents to those who are members or affiliated to fraternities and a randomly
selected 50 respondents to those who are not members or affiliated, to compare which of
the both are affected negatively and positively. The researcher chooses the Grade 10
students because most of them are members or affiliated to fraternities and there are also
cases that involves them such as crimes or violence whether they are a member or not.
Therefore, they can give the true, generalize and practical effects of membership in
fraternity.
Research Instrument
To identify the different Effects of Fraternities to the students, the researcher uses
a standardized questionnaire. The respondents needs to put a check mark on his or her level
of agree or disagree or what is needed to be fill. To measure the effect of it to an individual
it is based on five aspects: common fraternities, attitudes, skills, reasons and school
performance of students
Currently, there are many Greek organization, the researcher wants to identify what
are the present fraternities in San Miguel National High School and their traditions and
purposes. It is important to know what are the attitudes that they adopt to distinguish if
there negative or positive behavior is related after joining. According to several studies
there are skills that students can enhance in fraternities such as communication and
leadership skill. There are several reasons why students join Greek organizations that
pushes them to sign up whether personally or peer pressure. School Performance of
students is very much important if they excel in class even if they are members of a
fraternity.
THE PROBLEM

Performance of Grade 10 Students in San Miguel National High School School Year 2019-
2020
To be more specific, the following research question will be addressed to the total
result of the study:

2. What are the reason why students join fraternity?
3. What attitudes do students shows in school after joining fraternity?
4. What skills do students adopt in joining fraternity?
5. What is the school performance of members and not members of fraternity?
Null Hypothesis
Ho: There is no significant effect of fraternities to the academic performance of the
students.
