Communicating with Parents
This is a good time for the teacher to introduce them-self to the parents. Rules and expectations should be established. The teacher should communicate to the parents what he/she expects from them and what they should expect from him/her.
It is a good idea to give the parents an overview of what the curriculum contains for the year. A syllabus can be given out to the parents on this night as well.
Technology should be incorporated into the teacher’s presentation to the parents. It is always good for the parents to see how their children will be learning. Tutoring can be discussed. Let the parents know when you are available to tutor.
It is a good idea to give parents a brief overview of your history. Tell them about where you went to school and in what area(s) you are certified. Avoid telling them it is your first year!
Talk about school guidelines in general.
Always tell parents that you are looking forward to working with their child. Provide them with ways to contact you.Back 2 School Nights
Because open house night is generally held toward the end of the school year, I think the teacher and the students should be in charge of presenting information to the parents. This is a good time for students to inform their parents about everything they have learned throughout the year. The teacher can keep a collection of work, which was submitted by the students, and allow students to show their parents everything they have done or created. Open house nights are a good time for students to present their projects. Not only do their classmates see their work, but their parents as well.

Editor's Notes

  • #5: During back to school nights, rules and expectations are established. Curriculum outline and syllabus are given to parents as expectations of what their children will be learning in your class.Basically, you are introducing yourself to the students and their parents. Make sure all important information are covered, such as school guidelines, tutoring, background history, certifications, etc. Make sure to let parents know you are flexible in your teaching methods, which means you can incorporate technology in their education.
  • #6: Open House is conducted at the end of the school year. This is the opportunity for students and teachers to work together to present what the students have learned this school year to parents. Presents any products that shows students’ progress and knowledge in the course.
