A CT scan uses X-rays to create 3D images of internal structures like the brain and skull. It was invented in the 1960s and installed in hospitals by 1974. Today, CT scans are commonly used to diagnose problems in the head such as aneurysms, blood clots, tumors, and injuries by creating cross-sectional images with great clarity. While not as detailed as MRI, CT scanning provides clear bone images and is faster than MRI.
