Chromite
Introduction to chromite
• It’s an oxide mineral belonging to spinel group with spinel structure (cubic), with the
chemical formula of FeCr₂O₄.
• Ores:
• Commercial chromite deposits are found in two forms stratiform seams and irregular
podiform/lenticular deposits
Occurrence:
• The chromite minerals occur in layered formations that can be hundreds of
kilometers long and a few meters thick.
• Chromite deposits are being mined in several provinces surrounding Kabul, such
as Nangarhar, Kapisa, Parwan, Logar, Maidan-Wardak, and further to the north-
east, in Badakhshan and Panjshir
• Probable Reserves of Chromite are approximately 0.2 million metric tons
Uses:
The utilization of Chromite ores in three main industrial groups in terms of percentages
is provided below:
· Metallurgical –About 65 % to 70 % of the entire production is used by this sector alone.
· Chemical – this sector utilizes about 15 % to 20 % of the ore produced.
· Refractory – about 10 % to 15 % of ore is consumed by this sector.
Raw form: 300$ per ton
Ferrochrome 2400$ per ton
Market Analysis
Processing of chromite

Pellets are made from:-
- Chromite powder + Coal + Sillica
- Preheated to
General Reaction of reduction of chromite ore:
- Cr2FeO4 + 4C → 2Cr + Fe + 4CO
- Cr2O3 + 3C = 2Cr + 3 CO.

Refining of Chromium Metal
Secondary Options
1. Direct Production of Ferrochrome by Segregation
Reduction of Chromite in the Presence of Calcium
Chloride:
Pellets (powder chromite+graphite+cacl2) then
sintered 1300 for 2hr
1. Leaching by sulphuric acid then oxalic acid
2. Leaching by NaOH
3. Leaching by sulphuric acid and perchloric acid
