Unit 111: D1- Build and install
computer hardware with network
communication and an operating
system.
INSTALLING WINDOWS XP ONTO A COMPUTER.
BY AMIE BODKIN
Step 1- The Start
This screenshot shows the
starting screen of the
installation process.
All users will see this before the
process actually starts.
As you can see it provides
different options, but to install
the operatingn system, you
have to press 'Enter'.
Step 2- Licensing Agreement
After clicking 'Enter' from the
previous step, users will be
presented with this screen, which
is the Windows Licensing
Agreement.
To continue the installation
process, you have to press the F8
key and say that you agree with
what is written.
Step 3- Choosing/Creating a Partition
After agreeing to the Licensing
Agreement, you can either install
the operating system on
partitions that have already
been created, or you can
create another
partition, depending on how
much space is available.
Step 4- Formatting the Partition
If you chose a partition that has already been
created, then this screen will be presented to you. You
can either format it using the NTFS or FAT32 file system.
What is the difference between both file systems?
The NTFS is the more complex file system out of the two.
The NTFS is the more popular system, as it can recover
from some errors from the disk and it has improved
security.
The FAT file system is simpler than the NTFS system, but it
is found in the older versions of Windows Operating
Systems, such as Windows 95. The security is not as good
as the NTFS, meaning that anyone can go onto it.
Also, you can only store up to 4GB of data on this
particular partition.
Step 5- Setting Up
In this step, files are being copied , in case
anything goes wrong during the installation
process and files are lost or damaged. This is just
a precautionary measure, in case anything does
go wrong, and it doesn't mean that it will
actually happen.
Step 6- Changing Settings
As you can see from these
screenshots, you can change
different settings during the
installation process. You can enter
your name, organisation and
product key, and change the
language, computer name and
password, and the date and the
time.
Step 7- Network Settings
This screen allows the user to choose
what kind of the settings for the
network.
Step 8- Workgroup or Domain
This screenshot shows that you can choose
whether to allow the computer to join the
domain or add it to a workgroup.
