HENRY CLASSIFICATION
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONConsists of the following:PRIMARYSECONDARYSMALL LETTERSSUB-SECONDARYSMALL LETTERSMAJORFINALKEY
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONPRIMARYA numeric value is assigned to each of the ten finger blocks, ranging from 16-2.When a whorl appears, it assumes the value of that finger block. All other pattern types are disregarded when computing the primary.
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONPRIMARYThe Numerator = the total of fingers 2,4,6,8,10, plus one.The Denominator = the total of fingers 1,3,5,7,9, plus one.The Primary is placed in the center of the classification line.
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONSECONDARYThe Secondary is obtained from the pattern types present in the index fingers.
Finger #2 is the Numerator.
Finger #3 is the Denominator.
The Secondary is placed on the classification line to the right of the Primary.HENRY CLASSIFICATIONCapital letters are used to represent the Secondary. The following letters are used:Plain Arch – ATented Arch – T Radial Loop – R Ulnar Loop – UAll Whorls – W.
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONSmall Letters consist of capital “A,” small “a,” capital “T,” small “t,” or small “r” ONLY.Small letters appear on the classification line as their relative position to the index fingers.ALL small letters MUST be represented in the classification formula.SMALL LETTERS
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONSMALL LETTERSDashes (-) are used in the formula to indicate an ulnar loop or whorl intervening between the index finger and the first small letter, or between two small letters. Dashes will appear on the right side of the Secondary only.Consecutive small letters are indicated by: 2a, 2t, 2r, 3a, 3t, and 3r as they appear in fingers 3-5 and 8-10.
HENRY CLASSIFICATIONSUB-SECONDARYThe Sub-Secondary is computed from fingers 2-3-4 (numerator) and 7-8-9 (denominator).
The Sub-Secondary appears on the classification line to the immediate right of the Secondary, only if no Small Letters are present.
Definitive values are assigned to each finger used in the Sub-Secondary.
Whorl tracings are also a part of the Sub-Secondary.HENRY CLASSIFICATIONMAJORThe Major is computed using the thumbs.
The Major appears on the classification line to the immediate LEFT of the Primary.
Finger #1 has two sets of values as a loop and is used as the numerator. (see diagram next slide).HENRY CLASSIFICATIONMAJORFinger #6 has one set of values as a loop and remains constant, it is also used as the denominator.

  • 24. If whorls are present in both thumbs, the tracings are used as the Major.
  • 25. A Small Letter (a, t, r) in either or both thumbs, eliminates the Major.HENRY CLASSIFICATIONMAJOR CONTINUEDWhen #6 finger is a whorl and #1 finger is a loop, use the tracing of #6 for the denominator and the first set of values in #1 for the numerator. If #6 has a ridge count of 17 or more, use the second set of values for finger #1.1-Right Thumb6-Left Thumb
  • 26. HENRY CLASSIFICATIONFINALThe Final is computed using finger block 5 or 10.
  • 27. The Final appears on the classification line to the right of the Sub-Secondary.
  • 28. The Final is taken from finger #5 if it is either an Ulnar or Radial Loop and placed in the numerator of the classification.HENRY CLASSIFICATIONFINALIf no loop appears in #5, the Final is taken from finger #10 and placed in the denominator of the classification.
  • 29. If neither finger #5 nor #10 is a loop, there is no final, unless all 10 fingers are whorls. If all 10 fingers are whorls, finger #5 is counted as an Ulnar Loop and placed on the classification line.HENRY CLASSIFICATIONFINALThe Key is computed by using the ridge count of the first loop beginning with the right thumb, excluding both little fingers.
  • 30. The Key appears on the classification line to the left of the Major.
  • 31. The Key is always used in the numerator of the classification formula, regardless of the finger used.Questions ?
