Classification of Followers


1. According to the surface in contact :
a. – When the contacting end of the
follower has a sharp knife edge.
 Sliding motion is there between contacting surfaces.
 A side thrust exists between follower and the guide.
 Used - Less used in practice because of excessive wear due to
small area of contact.
b. – When the contacting end of the follower is
a roller.
 Rolling motion is there between contacting surfaces.
 Rate of wear is less due to roller contact.
 A side thrust exists between follower and the guide.
 Used – where more space is available e.g. Gas & oil engines
and aircraft engines.
c. – When the contacting end
of the follower is a perfectly flat faced.
 Sliding motion is there between contacting surfaces.
 Side thrust between follower and the guide is reduced and side
thrust due to friction is only there.
 Wear can be reduced by offsetting the axis of follower.
 When flat faced follower is circular then it is called Mushroom
Follower.
 Used – where space is limited e.g. with valves of automobile
engine.
d. – When contacting end of follower
is of spherical shape.
• Modified form of flat faced follower.
• Used – in automobile engines with valves.
Classification of Followers
2. According to the motion of the
follower :
a. – When
the follower reciprocates in guides as the cam rotates
uniformly.
b. – When the
uniform rotary motion of cam is converted into
predetermined oscillatory motion of follower.
3. According to the path of motion of the
follower :
a. – When the motion of the follower
is along an axis passing through the center of the
cam.
b. – When the motion of the follower
is along an axis away from the axis of the center of
the cam.
