Classroom management: Case
Study
CASE
6
Mrs. Sepulveda repeatedly had problems
when leading a class discussion with her
eighth graders. No matter how involved
in the topic the students were, there
were usually several students sitting in
the back who would talk, shout out silly
answers, and play with objects they had
brought from home.
Possible solution:
We know that being a teacher implies a great responsibility. It is important to
impose oneself, to be respected and to have students respect the authority. Many
times this task is not easy because the children already have some learned
rebellion and are not set limits. That makes the teacher's work more complex.
In this case Students were not interested and they had others distractions such as
objects they had brought from home. We as teachers can find some solutions to
deal with this common situation in the classroom for example:
CamilaVelásquezBriceño
-Establish a deep relationship in which you get to really impact them with your
behavior and your attitude towards them. This attitude allows a good classroom
environment because the teacher is perceived as a good leader and students
could think that they are in good hands.
It is very important to recognize the students’ particular problems in order to
understand their behaviors.
-Accept the challenge: this is the basis. It is necessary to assume that teaching
rebellious students is a challenge, not simply a nuisance to be borne.
-Do creative activities in class:. Worst of all is the "predictable" teacher, who
always does the same because he/she has a script learned. It is necessary to learn
to surprise your students in some way to gain their respect and do not see that you
are one more. If they are small, use didactic toys to illustrate your classes. Here
you can use the objects that they brought from their homes. Use those objects as a
realia. They will keep their attention on that due to the fact that they chose them.
-Create group cohesion: this is key among teenagers, but the most difficult. Many
times, groups of friends are mounted on one side and others on the other side in
the classroom, leaving some less popular alone and abandoned. This is a natural
tendency, but if the teacher acts as a leader, he/she can combat it by creating a
group feeling with activities that involve everyone and much, much, much prompt.
Ideas that can help you: prepare a play together, a football game or an
extracurricular activity.
- Know them: more than knowing math or language, you know, it is now necessary
to know human beings, specifically children and adolescents. How do they feel?
How do they act? How do they correct their mistakes? Study all you can in this
sense and you will see how you perceive your class in a very different way.
The key is treat all students equally.
