Introduction
Technical textile is playing a crucial role in combining
functionality and lifestyle. Touching our lives in almost all the
spheres, technical textiles have also made their foray in the
clothing and shoe industry. Aimed at fashion designers,
developers as well as shoe and clothing manufacturers, this
category of smart textiles is clubbed under the head
“CLOTHTECH”.
Clothtech
 Technical textiles which represent functional components of
clothing.
 Clothtech includes-
● Interlinings
● Sewing thread
● Shoe laces
● Fasteners (Zips, Velcro)
● Umbrella cloth
● Elastic narrow fabrics
 Extensively used for making special purpose clothes & footwear.
 Stability to high temperature & pressure
 High abrasion resistance
 Durability
 Shrinkproof and Wrinkle Resistance
 Resistance to UV radiations and waterproof
 Corrosion resistance and light weight
 High strength and resilience
 Tough weather and solvent resistance
Properties required for clothtech
Components of Shoes
Shoe Laces:-
 Mfd. from cotton(6s, 10s, 20s, & 40s),
PET(300 denier) & rarely PP(240 denier).
 Dyed yarns are used.
Shoe Interlinings:-
 Made from conventional textiles & nonwoven
fabrics.
 Cotton or nylon fabric with adhesive, is used.
Components of Clothing
Sewing Thread:-
 Used for stitching, hosiery, embroidery,
leather products mfg., bag closer, canvas &
tarpaulin etc.
 Made from PET, cotton, quartz, glass carbon,
teflon, steel & aramid fibres.
Interlinings:-
 Woven, nonwoven or knitted fabric.
 Provides insulation & body to quilts,
jackets, etc.
 Silk, wool, and artificial fibers are used.
Zip Fastener:-
Set of interlocking teeth, meshed by means
of a slide.
Nylon and PET zip fasteners are preferred.
Velcro:-
Hook & Loop fastener or Hook & Eye tape.
Woven from 100% nylon (100, 140, 170, 210,
280, 300, 430 denier ) yarn.
Shoulder Pads:-
 Fabric-covered padding
 Used in suits, jackets, in sportswear as a
protective aid & in overcoats.
 Stuffed with wool, cotton or saw dust.
Taffeta fabric:-
 Used in umbrella, windcheater, sleeping bags,
kites, artificial flowers, etc.
 Imported from China, South Korea, Taiwan &
Indonesia.
Narrow Fabrics (Smallwares)
Less than 45cms in width.
Used in garment & home furnishing
industry.
Materials used:-
Leather, Cotton, PET, Nylon, Teflon, Jute, Rubber, Fibre glass,
and Beads.
Other Applications:-
Automotive industry, Bags, Marine, Industry, Medical uses, and
Safety purpose.
Types of Narrow Fabrics
Labels:-
 Designate the origin, owner, contents, use,
etc. of a product.
 PVC rubber labels, leather labels.
Braids:-
 Made by interweaving three or more strands
or strips.
 Length & width can be customized.
Elastics:-
 Made of stretchable components.
 Used for making tapes, straps, trims, etc.
 It may be braided, woven, knitted or corded.
Lanyards:-
 Piece of rope or line used for fastening.
 Widely used as a piece of neckwear.
 E.g. Badge, beaded, breakaway, printed,
embroidered, plastic lanyards.
Ribbons:-
 Strip of fine fabric finished at the edges.
 Used for trimming, tying or finishing.
 Includes leather strings & satin ribbons.

 Long narrow strip of pliant material with a
buckle or fastener.
 Find usage in garment industry.
 E.g. Elastic, PET, leather, tie down straps.
Trims:-
 Includes ruffles, piping, banding, fringe,
braids, cords and tassels.
 Very ornate in appearance.
 E.g. Beaded, elastic, sewing and vinyl trims.
Webbings:-
 Strong, narrow, closely woven fabric.
 Used for seat belts & harnesses or
upholstery.
 E.g. Cotton, jute, PET, PP, reflective,
rigid & vinyl webbings.
Wicks & Mantles:-
 Loosely woven, twisted or braided cord.
 Draws up fuel to the flame as in a candle.
 Made up of cotton or fibre glass.
Finishing Process
Basic Finish:-
 Improves the surface appearance, function or texture of a
fabric.
 Includes mercerizing, calendering, napping, shearing,
cropping, embossing, sanding or beetling.
Dry Finishing:-
 The cloth is handled in dry condition.
 Includes perching, burling, specking, mending, calendering,
glazing, gassing, singeing or schreinerizing.
Market
Technical textiles consumption under Clothtech is estimated
at Rs 6,570 crore.
Sewing thread accounts for 60% consumption of clothtech,
followed by, labels (19%), interlinings (8%), elastic narrow
fabrics (6%), shoe laces & zip fasteners (5%), and velcro &
umbrella cloth (2%).
World consumption is forecast to grow slowly from 1.2 mln
tonnes in 2000 to 1.7 mln tonnes in 2010 with a value of US $
8.3 bln.
Consumption will be focused in low cost garment assembly
location.
