POP ART
Emerged in the mid 1950’s in the UK and the late 1950’s in the USA
In 1957 pop artist Richard Hamilton listed the ‘ characteristics’ of pop
art’ in a letter to his friends the architects Peter and Alison Smithson

“ I was a rich mans plaything”, one of the
‘Bunk’ series was the first visual art work
to include the word pop in British art.
American Pop Art evolved as an attempt to
reverse this trend by reintroducing the
image as a structural device in painting, to
pull art back from the obscurity of
abstraction into the real world again.

Pop art definition: Art based on modern popular
culture and the mass media, especially as a
critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art
values. google
Initially art was restricted only to things worthy of aesthetic
sense like human nudes, human faces, landscapes and still
life, but pop art movement started including celebrities like
Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, popular foods, branded
products, household items etc.. It was inspired by
contemporary society,news,magazines and even comics.

Task 1 – Research – Web source
American pop vs British pop
Although they were both inspired by similar subject matters, British pop is often seen as distinctive from American
pop.
When pop art first started in Britain it was fueled by American popular culture, while the American artists were
inspired by what they saw experience.

Edward Ruscha
He’s an American artist who is associated with the pop
art movement. He has worked in the media of painting,
printmaking,drawing,photography and film.
In his paintings, Rusha began to refine his collage, both
isolating and recombine text and images in an
increasingly subtle manner. Edward would take his own
photographs and then recreate them in his style of in a
way that he would see it as, he would formalize still life
paintings.

Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
I had to change my plan many times in order to fit the criteria that
was set of the course, I also had to keep it similar to my groups
posters so that others could clearly see that they where linked
together. I did this by communicated with the other in my group to
establish what we was going to keep the same and/or similar, I also
double checked the criteria several time in order to meet what my
tutor expected of me to do.
3.1

Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved
these
1)Photoshop as it was my first time using it in a while however David help
a lot and I rarely had to use the internet for help.
2)Think of ideas for my project was difficult although a quick research on
pop artists helped inspire my production.
3)Another problem I faced was thinking of something non digital to add to
my product however after doing some research and gathering as much
information as I could I soon figured out an idea.
3.3
Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well
with your team and this benefited the project
1)Thinking of a title for our product that is unique and links
