Cochran Custom Heifer Farm for Pine Tree Dairy
Farm Hand
About the Position
While I was a student at Ohio State ATI in Wooster, I became a farm hand
for a local heifer farm that raised heifers from weaning age through pre-
fresh. I worked for the family for both years I attended ATI. I started out
doing general barn cleaning and moving cattle, and ended up assistant herd
manager after my boss.
Major Task and Duties
• Feeding calves grain and forage
• Mixing three different batches of TMR to
feed our different age groups
• Moving cattle around home farm to their
respective age pens
• Keeping records of ration changes, cattle
number, vaccination records and
administration, etc.
• Heat checks and artificial insemination
using both sexed semen and
conventional semen
Accomplishments and
Experiences
• COBA and Select Sires artificial
insemination training provided by
the farm that we raised heifers for
• First introduction to field corn
harvesting and storage systems
• First time having complete
experience with being a herd
manager
• First time seeing a large animal
sonogram in use
