Com 227 Group Presentation
Type: Informative
Subject: Social Media
Members: Vicky Hansen, Alex Warble, Ashley Kersting, Dean Serritella, Amber
Eglund, Alyssa Damato
Sec 01 Topic Proposal
We are juniors at Illinois State University representing Com 227. We are
credible because our generation was, in essence, the first one to grow up with social
media and technology being prevalent in our daily lives. In addition, we’ve done
extensive research on the topic in order to gain a precise understanding of the impacts
that social media has on different aspects of our lives.
Our targeted audience is Com 227 classmates who also serve as our peers. Our
audience cannot closely attain to the consequences or impacts that may be occurring
while they engage in social media use. They also cannot individually do anything to
specifically change the overall effects of social media, but they can be part of the
changes that are occurring. It is important that our audience changes so that they can
understand the many roles that social media plays in our lives and be aware of the
positive and negative impacts that result from consistent social media use.
The presentation takes place in Room 152 of Fell Hall at Illinois State University
and uses the technology of a PowerPoint presentation and of the projector that we will
be presenting our information off of to the audience.
Sec 02 Audience Analysis
Our audience is capable of expressing their opinions over social media, changing
their perceptions, as well as the perceptions of others on aspects such as self image,
bullying, effects of teens and college students, cultural differences, the positives and
negatives about social media, economic impacts, and impacts on jobs. Our audience will
use the information we present by acquiring the capability of using social media and
engaging in certain behaviors on it even though they may not realize the repercussions.
Our audience is aware of what social media is and the different platforms that
qualify as social media. They do have prior knowledge on what can be classified as
good and bad to post; however, they might not take into consideration the long-term
consequences for their actions. Our audience may also not be aware of other aspects of
social media such as how it varies across cultures/how cultures intertwine through social
media, how there are both good and bad things about social media, how it affects how
future employers perceptions of those that actively post on social media, how it has
drastically changed self perceptions of individuals, and how it has impacted economic
circumstances.
The needs of our audience are to learn information that they may have not
already known or to learn more detailed information on topics that they are already
aware of. Their interests are vary depending on personal preference, but most of the
individuals can relate to information related to school or social media because most
students either use or have a social media account. Those that do not most likely know
of a family member or a friend that uses a social media account.
The audience’s motivation for learning from our presentation is the ability to
gain attention, learn about news and current events, stay up to date on peers, and the
ability to have quick access to information. Our audience might also have a motivation
to learn something that might solve a problem of their own or to help a friend solve a
problem.
Our audience is required to be here for a grade. They do not want to be here.
However, they might be open-minded to building their knowledge on new topics.
The style of meetings are generally formal, which is class time. There is a
designated leader of the group (the teacher) but everyone can voice their opinion and
have their chance to lead and inform the class. Students generally have to raise their
hand to ask a question or make a comment and that adds to the formality of the meeting
style. The ability of the students to ask whichever questions they choose makes the class
setting more informal.

Sec 04 Assessment Plan
Audience Achievement
How will you know if the audience has achieved your three outcomes? Specify how
you would measure each one separately. You could use exams, observations,
discussions, product inspection, sales records, etc. It should be appropriate to the
domain of the outcome. How does this relate to the behaviors identified in your
outcome statements?
We will know if the audience has achieved our outcomes by observing audience
behavior and feelings regarding social media use. To determine audience achievement
from the positive and negative effects of social media on society, we can observe the
class after the presentation and discuss if they feel prepared to categorize which aspects
of social media are creating positive or negative effects on them.
To determine audience achievement on our second topic of the impact social
media has personally on college students we engage in discussions with our peers to
determine how social media is affecting their college routines and mentalities.
To determine social media’s impact on cyberbullying and self-image we can
engage in discussions with our peers to determine their ability to let social media affect
their self-image.
For Impacts on different cultures we can engage in discussions with students of
different cultures to see the role that social media plays in affecting how they view
themselves.
For impact on the economy we can engage in discussions or observe records and
charts regarding social media’s impact on economic changes. Lastly, we can engage in
discussions with both employees and employers to determine the impact that social
media has on jobs by listening to individuals’ preferences in using social media for
job-related purposes. Not only could we engage in discussions with our peer, but we
could also measure this by individual interviews or by dispersing anonymous or
identified questionnaires that the audience members could give feedback on.
Quality of Presentation /Media
We could assess how well we performed as presenters by recording ourselves or
presenting in front of a friend or our other group members to gain feedback on our
strengths and weaknesses. We could also administer a survey to our audience to assess
our performance after we are finished presenting. Finally, we could research online what
the characteristics of a successful presentation looks like and compare our own
presentation to the advice found.
