Bilingual speakers have cognitive advantages over monolingual speakers. Studies show that bilinguals perform better on tasks that require ignoring distractions. They are able to hold two languages in mind without allowing words from one language to interfere with the other, which gives them greater mental control. As a result, bilinguals may have superior working memory abilities for storing and processing information. While a single global language could reduce communication issues, it would also diminish the diversity of human language and ways of describing the world, as many smaller languages would die out.
