This document discusses how community mapping in rural Tanzania is helping to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. - 8. Remote mappers from all over the world trace roads and buildings from satellite images to make a base map in OpenStreetMap – an open source map. Anyone with an internet connection can get involved – so please get in touch if you would like to help.
- 9. MAPPING ON MAPS.ME We train Digital Champions and other field mappers in rural Tanzania to add their local knowledge to the map using Maps.Me, a free smartphone app that works offline.
- 11. And train the police and activists to use the maps to quickly find and protect girls at risk. And also add missing places to the map.
- 13. We trained Digital Champions in each village in Serengeti to map their village, and to report GBV. Here new smartphone users see a map of their village for the first time.
- 15. Digital Champions were selected from the Women and Children’s Protection Committee by the village. They had never used a smartphone before. Training included how to use the phone that they were provided with. It also included a micro sd (memory) card with downloaded videos, books and other materials about agriculture, health and womens’ rights.
- 16. Digital Champions were trained how to report incidents of GBV using a free app called ODK, Open Data Kit. Incidents went to Social Welfare who dealt with them.
- 17. Digital Champions were joined into a WhatsApp group for ongoing training and support, as well as training in person and training visits by Safe House staff.
- 18. Digital Champions being trained on an app called PlantVillage Nuru on how to detect pests in maize and cassava.

Ending FGM has many components as well as the Digital Champions: Community work Anti-FGM clubs and work in schools Re-educating Cutters Entrepreneurship training Digital Champions are working with Nottingham University on researching on risk factors for FGM and how they vary between villages. - 22. Digital Champions also surveyed access to services such as water and pharmacies in their villages.
- 26. In Matare Village, after an introduction to the SDGs villagers were asked which were most relevant to their community.
- 27. Priorities were: • Access to healthcare • Access to clean water • Better roads to market
- 28. Next steps: Sample village every 6 months to track progress.
