Assessment
Problem: Adolescents struggle with maintaining good oral hygiene
● Stress, orthodontic appliances, lack of knowledge and prior habits
Facility:
● Presented to 32 adolescents at Wasatch Junior High
● Ms. Carling’s 8th grade English class
Existing resources:
● UCDH: typodonts, toothbrushes, and floss for demonstration.
● Colgate: toothbrushes to hand out to students
● Haley’s Home: ribbon for floss game
● Wasatch Junior High: touch screen projector and scissors
Assessment
Demographics:
● Ages 13-15 years old
● Male and Female
○ 14 boys
○ 18 girls
● Reside in Salt Lake
○ Non-fluoridated water
Funding:
● Was equally funded by all researchers
Diagnosis/Data Analysis
● Pretest- 1 week prior
○ Pretest questions- diet, brushing and flossing habits
● 27 of the 32 students knew prior to presentation that you should visit the
dentist semi-annually
● Only 36% of students in pretest recognized that frequent snacking had a
negative effect
● 3 of the 32 students knew the importance of brushing with a soft bristled
toothbrush with light pressure
Planning
Goals: To improve the knowledge of oral hygiene in adolescents
Objectives:
1.1 To improve tooth brushing and flossing techniques of adolescents.
1.1.1 To demonstrate tooth brushing techniques using typodonts.
1.1.2 To provide a presentation on the consequences of proper brushing habits
2.1 To educate adolescents on the presence of biofilm in their own mouths.
2.1.1 To provide examples on how to recognize the presence of biofilm in their
own mouths.
2.1.2 To provide each adolescent with their own disclosing tablet.
Implementation
Formative Evaluation:
- Overall presentation went well
- Researchers had to make minor adjustments (did not affect outcome of
program)
- Pre and Post test were not administered as hard copy
- Presented immediately after lunch
- Only had 30 minutes
-Weren’t able to administer biofilm tablets
Implementation
Timeline:
Feb. 5: Send pretest to Ms. Carling (middle school teacher)
Feb. 12: Pretest was administered
Feb. 19: Obtain all supplies for researchers presentation including toothbrush and
powerpoint. Received results of pretest
Feb 26: Present at Wasatch Middle School to 8th
grade class
March 4: Posttest administered and received results back from Ms. Carling
March 19: Have all results and information gathered and finalized
Implementation
● Presentation was given
○ 4 corners game to engage the students
○ Powerpoint
■ 3 topics
■ Questions asked throughout for participation
○ Minute-to-Win-It Games
■ Brush your teeth for 2 minutes without timer
■ Measure 18-inches of floss without ruler
■ Chug a juicebox the quickest
○ Answered any remaining questions
○ Handed out toothbrushes to each student
Evaluation
Program Goal: Improve the oral health knowledge of adolescents
- Pretest proved some things were not common knowledge
- Posttest showed overall improvement in all categories
-Students participated during presentation
Program Structure/Process:
- Used pretest to help plan presentation with the needs of the adolescents
- Powerpoint and hands on activities were effective
- Posttest showed what had been learned and improvements needed
