California law outlines two aspects of paralegal competency: educational requirements and conduct expectations.
(1) The Business and Professions Code specifies ways for paralegals to meet initial educational levels through various types and amounts of schooling or experience, and requires 8 hours of continuing education bi-annually.
(2) The Rules of Professional Conduct address paralegal competence in terms of having the ability and taking action to perform work sufficiently, including considering personal stability, behavior, research/writing skills, and knowing one's own limits.
