CG,Formal Definition
Computer Graphics is generally concerned
with all aspects of using a computer to
generate images.
DEFINITION OF COMPUTER
GRAPHICS
Computer Graphics
Interactive Computer Graphics
BASIC ELEMENTS OF CG
Many computer graphics applications involve:
 Modelling
a) Choice of representation
 Rendering
a) geometry, visibility
b) mapping from ‘real world’ to ‘image space’
c) Simulation of interaction of light with objects
I. Reflection, transmission, emission,
refraction,defraction and interference.
 Animation

General Application Of CG
COMPUTER GRAPHICS FOR
MOVIES
The entertainment industry plays many
important roles in the field of computer
graphics.
Leaders in quality and artistry
Not slaves to conceptual purity
Big budgets and tight schedules
Constant remainder that there is more to
CG than technology
COMPUTER GRAPHICS FOR
MOVIES
• Hollywood has invested much on to computer
graphics.
• The state-of-the-art special effects are amazing.
More and more of these images exist only within the
memory of a computer.
• In addition to those big budget mega
productions, there are music videos, and spinning
logos on the 6 o'clock news.
• Computer graphics is now as much a part of the
entertainment industry as stunt men and makeup.
COMPUTER GRAPHICS FOR
GAMES
Impacts from game’s industry
Focus on interactivity
Cost-effective solutions
Avoiding computation and other tricks
Games drive the baseline
Games are an important driving force
In computer graphics.
CG FOR MEDICAL IMAGING
Influence from medical applications
1. New data representations and modalities
2. Drive issues of precision and correctness
3. Focus on presentation and interpretation
of data
4. Construction of models from acquired data
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN
CAD has had the follow impact on computer
graphics.
 Drives the high-end of the hardware market
 Integration of computing and display
resources
 Reduced design cycles
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACES
(GUIS)
Computer graphics is an integral part of
every day computing. Nowhere is this fact
more evident than the modern computer
interface design.
MORE ABOUT CG APPLICATIONS
1. Business Graphics.
2. Art.
3. Animation.
4.Advertising,
Entertainmnt.
5. Image processing.
6. Command and Control.
7. Process simulation and
verification.
8. Geographical data bases.
9. Virtual reality.
10. Office automation and
electronic publishing.
THE IMAGE-GENERATING PROCESS
AND GRAPHICS HARDWARE
The actual form of an image depends on the
type of display hardware being used in
addition to the primitives and attributes used
in picture description.
The varying intensity of the image elements can
take several forms.
Simplest form - an image element can be black
or white the image is true monochrome
Subtly in the range of intensities can be
obtained by shading
Introduction to Graphical
Hardware Display Technologies
Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs)
• CRTs are the most common display device
today
• Evacuated glass bottle (last remaining vacuum
tube)
• Heating element (filament)
• Electrons attracted to focusing anode cylinder
• Vertical and Horizontal deflection plates
• Beam strikes phosphor coating on front of tube

3. Change in color as shown in fig:
4. Change in structure as shown in fig:
ANIMATION
5. Change in angle as shown in fig:
Animation Functions
Morphing
Wrapping
Tweening
Panning
 Zooming
 Fractals
MORPHING
WRAPPING
 Wrapping function is similar to morphing
function.
 It distorts only the initial images so that it
matches with final images and no fade
occurs in this function.
