Introduction
• Almost all the religions of the World whether it is Christianity,
Hindu, Buddhism, Jain, Sikh and Islam etc. have preached for
righteous relationship amongst the human beings in terms of
Altruism.
• Religion is a phenomenon evident in every culture. Different types
of religion exist depending on the group of believers, the number
of gods worshiped and the representations of these gods.
However all religions are built on a common ground.

Research Gap
In the review of literature, we found a number of studies
that state a negative and no correlation between religiosity
and prosociality. However our point of interest was that the
common ground for almost all religions is the
encouragement of prosocial behaviour. So we conducted a
research on the same taking these two variables into
account. Our results show that there is a positive
correlation between religiosity and prosociality.
Objective
The aim of the present study was to
understand the relationship between
religiosity and pro-social behavior
Methodology
• Sample size: 60 Undergraduate
students
• Sample characteristics: 60
Undergraduate students comprising
of all religions from Delhi University
• Sampling: Convenience Sampling
• Tools: Centrality of Religiosity Scale
and Youth Pro-social behavior scale
Results
• Bivariate correlation was performed on the data by using SPSS.
• Results indicate that positive association was established between
religiosity and pro-social behaviour. This indicates that as religiosity
increases, the pro-social behaviour in the individuals also increases.
Dimensions Correlation Significance
Religiosity 0.52 0.54
Pro Sociality 0.52 0.54
Discussion
Religiosity and Prosoociality
Klearhos k. Stamatoulakis (2013):
The studies retrieved are dated from 2005 to 2010. The main hypothesis of the
study is that religiosity is positively correlated with prosociality. Secondary
hypothesis is that religious priming, both subliminal and direct, will affect religious
and, also, non- religious individuals in promoting and enhancing prosocial
behaviour. Our conclusions are that (a) religiosity predicts prosociality and (b)
priming affects both groups for different reasons.
Religiosity and Prosocial Behaviours in Adolescence: The Mediating Role of
Prosocial Values
Hardy, Sam A.; Carlo, Gustavo
Religiosity and Prosocial Behaviours in Adolescence: The Mediating Role of
Prosocial ValuesIn this study Religiosity was a significant positive predictor of
kindness, as well as compliant, anonymous and altruistic prosocial behaviour, but
not public, dire and emotional prosocial behaviour.
Conclusion
• According to Mahatma Gandhi ‘If we are to teach real peace in the world we
shall have to begin with children.’ Education is not a mere pile of facts and
data for memorization but a source of enlightenment and strength.
• Kothari Commission (1966) pointed out, “In the development that we
envisage in the future, we hope that the pursuit of men, material affluence
and power would be subordinated to that of higher values and the fulfillment
of the individual.” The National Education policy 1986 also reflects the light
on value based education.
• Content related to ‘Bhagavad Gita ’ is already included in National Council of
Educational Research & Training (NCERT)’s Class XII Sanskrit text book,
namely, Shashwati, Part-II (Chapter IV: Karma Gauravam) since 2007-08.
• Thus, it should be taught at different levels of education in widely understood
languages in a neutral nature to enhance spiritual intelligence.
Future Directions
Qualitative research can be conducted to
understand how the two variables i.e.,
religiousness and prosocial behaviour hang
together in one large frame.
Limitations
• Small sample size
• Less hetrogeneity
• For most people, a complete understanding
of what religion is and what it means to them
does not develop until middle adulthood, so
the results may vary with age.
