INTRODUCTION:
Management is an essential part of any group
activity. It is primary force within the group or
organizationwhich tends to lead it toward the
group goal. It is required to plan, organize, co-
ordinate, and control all activities of the
organization to achieve its objectives.
CONCEPT OF MANAGEMENT:
Meaning of management:
The term management has different views.
Sometimes it refers to manage the group of
managerial personnel in an organization and
sometimes viewed as a process to carry out all
activities of management.
Changing concept of
management:
• Traditional concept
• Functional concept
• Human relation concept
• Leadership & decision making
concept
• Integration concept
• Traditional concept - management is an art of
getting the thing done
• Functional concept - management is what a
manager does
• Human relation concept - management is an art
of getting the thing done through others by
creating a motivating environment
• Leadership and decision making concept -
management is an art and science of decision
making and leadership
• Integration concept - management is a process
of utilizing human and material resources
effectively
Definition of management:-
According to George, R Terry,
"Management is a process to plan,
organize,direct and control performance to
determine and acomplish the stated objectives
by the use of human being and other resources
"

Management is a systematic
process:
Changing concept of nursing
management:-
•Efficiency or performance oriented view-
this view emphasizes the relationship between
efforts and results to achieve predetermined
objectives, i.e. to ensure best possible nursing
care
•Decision oriented view- According to
Peter Drucker, Moore opine, managers has a
great role in management. Nursing
management is also a process of making
various adminiatrative decision and
controlling nurses working in different
positions in the hierarchy for the expressed
purpose of attaining the predetermined goal
of ensuring the quality of patient care.
•Personnel oriented view-
management is like a process of co
ordinative efforts of the personnel working
in the organization and management is
concerned with personnel management.
Nursing management is also aiming to
accomplish the work through and with
nursing personnel.
•Functions oriented view- nursing
management is a process of forecasting, planning,
organizing , coordinating and controlling the work
of nursing personnel by nurse manager to achieve
organizational goals.

Nursing management consists of the performance of
the leadership functions of governance and decision
making within organisations employing nurses.
Nurse managers are responsible for managing
human and financial resources, ensuring patient and
staff satisfaction, maintaining a safe environment for
staff, patient, visitors, ensuring standards , quality of
care and aligning the unit's goal with the hospital's
strategic goals.
