BATCHING
Batching is the process of measuring and introducing into the mixer
the ingredients for a batch of concrete.
There are two methods of batching:
(i) Volume batching (ii) Weigh batching
Source :- Gharpedia.com
A. THE DO’S OF BATCHING OF CONCRETE
Scale recipes up, and measure accurately.
Do take safety precautions.
It is desirable to deposit concrete as near as practicable to its final position.
Approach to reach the placing area should be free from any traffic
obstruction, ensuring concrete placement with least lag.
B. THE DON’TS OF BATCHING CONCRETE
 Too high temperature is a problem for large size concrete
batching plant.
Batch perishable ingredients such as egg whites or milk.
 Leave batched cocktails with citrus for longer than two days.
 Don’t Guesstimate amounts.
Concrete practices: Do's and Dont's for (Batching, mixing, placing, compaction and curing)
MIXING
Thorough mixing of the materials is essential for the production of
uniform concrete. The mixing should ensure that the mass becomes
homogeneous, uniform in colour and consistency.
There are two methods adopted for mixing concrete:
(i) Hand mixing (ii)Machine mixing

A. THE DO’S OF MIXING CONCRETE
DO gather all the materials and supplies you’ll need before starting
DO know exactly how much concrete you need.
DO test for “slump” before beginning your project
Bobvila.com
B. THE DON’TS OF MIXING CONCRETE
DON’T skip the protective eyewear, rubber gloves, long sleeves, and
pants.
DON’T just dump the dry concrete mix in first.
DON’T leave any water puddles or dry bits in the concrete mixture

PLACING OF CONCRETE
 The aim of good concrete placing can be stated quite simply. It is to
get the concrete into position at a speed, and in a condition, that allow
it to be compacted properly.
Source:- P Kumar Mehta & Internet
A. THE DO’S OF PLACING CONCRETE
 The concrete should be placed in uniform layers, not in large heaps
or sloping layers.
 The thickness of the layer should be compatible with the method of
vibration so that entrapped air can be removed from the bottom of
each layer.
 For deep sections, a long down pipe ensures accuracy of location of
concrete and minimum segregation.
Source:- P Kumar Mehta & Internet
B. THE DON’TS OF PLACING CONCRETE
Collision between concrete and formwork or reinforcement should be
avoided.
For deep sections, a short down pipe should not be used as it ensures
less accuracy of location of concrete and minimum segregation.
Do not perform concrete placing where low light is available for large
deep sections

COMPACTION
Consolidation or compaction is the process of molding concrete within
the forms and around embedded items and reinforcing steel to
eliminate pockets of empty space and entrapped air.
This operation can be carried out by hand rodding and tamping.
However, now it is carried out by mechanical methods such as power
tampers and vibrators that make it possible to place stiff mixtures
with low water-cement ratio or high content of coarse aggregate.
Concrete practices: Do's and Dont's for (Batching, mixing, placing, compaction and curing)
A. THE DO’S OF COMPACTION OF CONCRETE
 Use of vibrator for better settlement of concrete layers.
 Hand Compaction :- RODDING, RAMMING, TAMPING
External Vibration This is adopted where internal vibration cant be
used due to either thin sections heavy reinforcement
B. THE DON’TS OF COMPACTION OF CONCRETE
The soil can become over compacted if the operator makes too many
passes in one direction with the machine, and this can reduce soil
density.
Under compaction leads to uneven settlement of the soil, and this
unevenness won’t be able to bear the weight of the structure, leading
to structural issues.
Don’t use a vibrator to move concrete horizontally.
Don’t start a job without a spare vibrator.
CURING
Concrete curing deserves special attention in the construction practice
because inadequate curing frequently causes the lack of proper strength
and durability.
One of the most common methods for curing concrete is to hose it down
frequently with water—five to 10 times per day, or as often as you can
Curing methods may be divided broadly into four categories:
(a) Water curing (b) Membrane curing (c ) Application of heat
(D) Miscellaneous
A. THE DO’S IN CONCRETE CURING
DO cover newly poured concrete.
DO pond cure concrete slabs. DO make the curing process more
manageable by using a curing compound.
DO a slump test before placing the concrete.
DO spray your newly poured concrete with water
Water curing
WATER PONDING CURING

B. THE DON’TS IN CONCRETE CURING
Don’t let fresh concrete get cold.
Don’t paint or strengthen concrete in the first month
Don’t put too much weight on new concrete too soon.
DON’T skip control joints in concrete slabs.
DON’T subject new concrete to excessive weight
