Budget
During pre-production, I was in charge to create the budget that we would need to use when in the production process. I
decided to use Microsoft Excel because it is useful and effective to use when using numbers and need a table layout to
keep the numbers and information organised. It is also quite straightforward to use and save the task easily.
Due to being media students, we decided that we would not spend that much money on items and transport because we
would only have a certain amount of money that we could use. For instance, I decided that instead of purchasing new
equipment such as, a camera, tripod and microphone, we could instead use the school’s filming equipment with the
permission form the media teacher. Thankfully, the teacher agreed to give us permission to use the appropriate filming
equipment which would firstly, allow us to film our documentary in a professional way and secondly, cover the most of
our expenses and overcame this issue. Also, we knew that if we had to use public transport to travel to the location, it
would be for free if we used the bus because we all have an oyster card that is free for students to travel therefore we did
not need to spend any money for transport as we only use the local bus and the locations were close to get to.
Even though it does state that the budget was around £6,000. We only used this figure an idea of what the actual price
would be for the budget if we really had to buy the items but in this case we didn't not have to buy most of our items and
therefore saved our money but still used the budget as a guide.

As you can see from these two images, the
budget was created on Microsoft Excel because
of the grid form layout which is convenient to
include numbers and have a easy layout to rid
from due to the numerous information on the
page needed to be typed up on. Below is the link
to get access to the original copy of the budget.
Legal
Whilst filming our social action project, we made sure that we did not break any laws for instance, due
to recording in a school building whilst students attending at the times we were filming at, we made
sure to not film the faces of the students if we did not have permission from them to use their identity in
our documentary. Before filming for the documentary, we had to complete the tasks, the talent release
form and the location release form. The talent release form is a document which is given to the
individual who will sign the document as giving permission to our group, Eclipse Studios, to use their
identity in the documentary. The location release form is the other document which the individual who is
the owner of the property or land signs the document as an agreement to give us permission to use their
property or land. By creating these documents, it allowed us to make sure that we did not break the
laws, therefore overcoming the legal constraints.
These images are the screenshots from the documents created as the form which people
would need to sign before using their identity or property when recording for the documentary.
Ethical
We followed the professional principles of the NUJ code of conduct such as, the right of freedom of
expression and the right of the public to be informed. Ensuring that the information presented is honest,
accurate and fair. Moving on, we followed the rule to no intrude into anybody's private life, grief or
distress and protect the identity of sources who supplied information in confidence.
Following the SPJ code of ethics, we made sure that we seeked the truth and reported it as we should
be accurate, fair and be honest in gathering, reporting and interpreting information. Also, we followed
the code of minimising harm which means that we treat sources, colleagues and members of the public
with respect. In addition, we acted independently which we avoided conflict and distinguished news
from advertising.
We made sure that we would follow these ethical rules in order not to break the laws and overcome this
situation.
Copyright and Design and Patents Act (1988):
Copyright is a legal law that protects the use of work once the idea has been physically expressed. Copyright sets out the rights of the
owner, as well as the responsibilities of of other people who want to use the work.
The copyright owner in the film, generally the production company, will negotiate with distribution and television companies.Film works do
not have to be original. For example, a CCTV security recording will be protected alongside a famous Hollywood film.As well as copyright in
the recording of the film, there is usually copyright in the film's content, for example, literary copyright in the film's dialogue or musical
copyright in the film's soundtrack.
The duration of a Copyright in the film industry lasts for 70 years from the death of the last person that is:
1. The film's director
2. The screenplay writer
3. The dialogue producer
4. The composer of any specially commissioned music
If the identity of these persons is unknown the length of protection is 70 years from when the film was made or from when the film was
made first available to the public. The film's director and producer are treated as joint authors under UK copyright law and therefore as joint
owners of copyright in the film.
Decision
We decided that we would only use 30 seconds of a song that we needed to play
for a certain scene in the background. We decided not to use the whole music
audio because we only wanted certain parts of the song to play in the
background as a scene would play and the rest of the documentary had a voice
over of the narrator speaking the background, therefore we didn't need to use the
whole sound of the music but only use a part of it. Also, if we did use the whole
song then it would lead to our documentary breaking the rules of copyright
because we would need to get permission from the owner to use their song for
our video but we did not get permission hence leading us to only use 30 seconds
of the song for free.
Copyright and Design and Patents Act (1988):
Defamation is an act (2013)of the Parliament of the United Kingdom on the issue of the right to protect the reputation of a person. Defamation
will occur when untrue and damaging information has been told by one person about an individual or an organisation that can damage their
reputation.
The defamation act allows the person or the company to sue for damages that have ruined their reputation caused by the comments made that
has been published or been told to other people. The person or the company can sue the person who made the comments can only be taken to
court if they have published the comments through:
1. Broadcasting on the radio or on the television
2. On the internet
3. Via email
However, if the person who defamed the person or the company cannot be sued if they have reasonable and logical reasons for making theses
certain comments towards the individual or the company:
1. The publisher must prove that the comments are true.
2. If it is the publisher's honest opinion - but based on facts.
The comments must be either liable or slander. Liable a written or published defamatory statement while slander is defamation that is spoken by
the defendant.
From having knowledge about the defamation act, my group and I decided that during the
process of the interviews of people, that we asked permission for them to take part, and
that they would tell us a true or fake story dealing with bullying. We made sure that we did
not break the defamation law because we did not want to exaggerate a person’s story
when interviewed if it was true. Also, if the person wanted to tell us their real story then
we hid their identity and shown them as an anonymous person saying their experience.
Decision
Regulatory
The OFcom Broadcasting Code outlines the rules which programmes broadcast on television in the UK that they
must obey.
There are numerous of codes that the television service must abide from the OFcom Broadcasting Code
Guidance such as, Protecting the under eighteens - observing the watershed on television, Offensive language,
Harm and offence, Crime and alcohol or drug abuse, Fairness, and Commercial references in television
programming.
Following this regulatory action, we decided to make sure that our documentary did not contain any sexual,
harmful and offensive language as we knew that our target audience were from ages 14-19, therefore we made
sure that we did not break these rules as it would be against the law if we did include the offensive language,
harm and sexual scenes in the social action project that was created for young ages to watch.
