R.L. Stevenson was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. As a child, he was often ill and unable to attend school, so he spent much time reading books in bed, including works by Shakespeare and from the Old Testament. This inspired his most famous work, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", which explores the duality of human nature and was influenced by real-life cases of people with dual personalities, such as William Brodie and the Burke and Hare murders.
