Conventions of a real
Alternative music
magazine!
By Charlotte Bowerman
Front cover!The large, bold
masthead which
catches the
readers eye is
something used
widely in alternate
magazines; It
dominates the
page. It is a short,
abbreviated title
and displays an
artistic font.
Skylines are always
used to grab attention
and gives another
reason to buy the
magazine.
The main image
normally overlaps
the masthead, it
makes the
magazine look
professional and
edgy. Always a very
bold, eye
catching
anchorage text to
issue information
and relate to the
main imgae.
A lot of colour is used throughout the magazine; red,
white, and black are used massively within this
genre as they stand out and go well together,
making the magazine look good.
The front cover is usually
‘busy’, there’s lots going
on and lots of
advertisements for things
within the magazine.
The title is in the from
a the masthead and
resembles the same
fonts and colours
(Red, white and black)
used on the front
cover. So it is following
an obvious colour
scheme which creates
continuity and makes
the magazine look
professional and well
made.
It has a very busy
layout, featuring lots
of articles and more
than one photo. It
makes the page look
exciting; lots of colour
has been used.
Individual headers
separate the
magazine into
different categories,
making it easier for
the reader to
navigate they’re way
around it.
There are page numbers for
every article . Each image will
relate to the article and normally
the front cover.
Smaller fonts are used for
the article information and
for the headers a larger font
is used.
Normally has two columns
separated by the photo’s.
The page will normally offer
some kind of special or
advertisement.
Contents Page!
Double page spread!
A quote is normally used
to introduce the article,
which has been taken
from it. (Pull quotes)
Underneath there is a
brief description of what
the article is based on
and what the subject is
doing. E.g.- starting a
tour.
An introduction is used to explain
who the article is about and what
they will be discussing. Its better
than just going straight into the Q
and A.
A single main image
covering most of the
left side of the side,
with the article on
the right. Would
normally continue
the colour scheme
used on the front
cover of that issue.
A tab which relates to
section from the
contents page, lets
the reader know
which section they
are reading.
The questions are in one
font and the answers in
another; it’s a really good
way of distinguishing
between the two.
