Coping Techniques  Dealing with Stress
Find the Source  Physical threats Emotional threats  Relationship issues  Self-esteem threats  Body image  Capability to achieve The key cause and the key to coping is a sense of  control
Respond Adaptive - helps with coping  Maladaptive - avoids or compounds the issue Avoidance Positive: stress reduction (exercise, a holiday) Negative: wishful thinking  Altering the meaning  Positive: joking  Negative: denial  Altering the problem  Positive: getting more info, standing one’s ground, changing someone’s mind
Difference between Boys and Girls -talk, seek social support -plan, work hard  -worry, cry, blame themselves -accept defeat -seek spiritual support -engage in wishful thinking -seek approval from others -play games -use humour -deal with it  -become aggressive -abuse drugs/alcohol -vent seek distraction ignore/deny Girls  Boys
Positive Strategies  If you don’t like something change it or learn to live with it! Seek social support  Share the load, get encouragement, information, advice and support from friends, family and colleagues   Actively problem solve  Assess the problem, look for solutions and resources Set goals Achieving a goal can improve self esteem Work hard  Productivity leads to achievement and often the reduction of work and stress Take action - take control and make a change  Focus on the positive  Seek professional help  Find balance between work and fun  Do things to relieve stress, be social, rest and relax Stay Healthy   Keep fit, exercise, eat right, take care of yourself
Negative Strategies  Inhibits learning and wellbeing and can cause illness Worry, anxiety  (can be positive if not excessive) Becoming too concerned with peer groups Wishful thinking, denial, avoiding reality Violence, drugs and alcohol  (makes things worse) Not coping, giving up, doing nothing  Self blame, self harm  Keeping it too yourself - increases stress, depression
