Editor's Notes

• #3: Remember DR ABC
• #5: Remember you are checking for regular breathing
• #6: As soon as someone isn't breathing, you need to ensure an ambulance has been called. If there are other people around, you can ask them to call the ambulance for you.
• #7: The ratio is 30 chest compressions then 2 rescue breaths
• #8: No, you don't have to give rescue breaths if you are unable to / unwilling.
• #9: You should roll the casualty onto their side to clear their airway, then continue with CPR.
• #11: CPR needs to be carried out on a hard surface to ensure chest compressions are effective
• #12: The latest European Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines recommend a rate of 100 - 120 chest compressions a minute.
• #13: Sometimes you may feel ribs break, especially on frail casualties. If this is the case, double check your hand position (your hands should be in the middle of the casualty's chest, over the breastbone) and continue.
• #15: For a larger child, you may have to use two hands.
• #16: Unfortunately the casualty is unlikely to recover during CPR, you are merely 'buying time' before the defibrillator arrives.
