The Secrets they didn’t teach you in College Jason Lauritsen CRACKING THE CODE TO CAREER SUCCESS
Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved. - William Jennings Bryan
8 SECRETS OF CAREER SUCCESS
1. INVEST IN YOURSELF. Think of yourself like an investment account. Experiences Learning Relationships Invest early so it grows and pays over career. Discretionary time is yours to invest. Take advantage of every opportunity for learning you are offered.
2. BECOME SELF AWARE Self-Awareness Objective understanding of one’s own talents, strengths, weaknesses, and passions and the role these play in our decision making and behavior
Components of Self-Awareness Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Talents, Strengths Behavioral and Personality Styles Values, Beliefs Passions, Interests Blind spots, Weaknesses
Caution! We are the least accurate assessors of ourselves. Recommendation: Utilize assessments (Myers Briggs, Keirsey, StrengthsFinder). Survey people you trust and ask them to identify for you your strengths and opportunities. Reflect on who you are and who you wish to be.
3. HAVE A PLAN.
DO I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING? Intentionality The quality of making choices and taking action towards the achievement of important goals. Two Parts: What do you want to accomplish? How will you make it happen?
Dream Vacation Where would you go? Why would you go there? What would you do once you got there? What would the experience feel like? Why take a vacation?
Dream Job What would it be? Why would you go choose it? What would you do once you got it? What would the experience feel like? Why choose that career path?
DO I KNOW WHERE I’M GOING? Personal Manifesto What I plan to do Who I intend to be Written Personal Bold Meaningful
Manifesto 1: To make over $100,000 per year by working hard, taking risks and seizing the opportunities that present themselves to me. Manifesto 2: Be the best father and husband I can be. I will do this by committing quality time every day to spend with my family and working hard to ensure our financial security today and in the future.
JASON’S MANIFESTO Overwhelm my family with love and support. Be a stellar role model for my children. Fly my freak flag proudly. Make good things happen. Learn and grow every day. Live courageously. Invest generously in my community. Be the solution.
Great deeds are usually wrought at great risks. – Herodotus of Halicarnassus
4. HAVE SOME GUTS. Spend time thinking about the important issues and have an opinion on things that you can defend. Talk to your boss about your career goals. Share your goals with others. Ask for and take on big, important projects. Courage
5. DELIVER RESULTS. Low performers don’t get promoted. Regardless if you love your current job or not, focus on delivering great results.
KNOW WHAT MATTERS Questions you should be able to answer: How is my performance measured? What does my boss consider to be high performance? What things are really important to my boss? What do I need to do to meet and exceed these expectations?
PRACTICE AND PREPARATION
6. LOOK AND ACT THE PART. Perception is reality when it comes to advancing. Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. (When in doubt, overdress.) Everything you do is important and is being judged. Treat every interaction as an interview for your next job (conversations, meetings, emails, etc).
