Director, Office of Learning and Teaching
Dear Shelley
Blended Learning in Project Management
We have now effectively finished our work together in enhancing the use of blended
learning throughout the Master of Project Management degree. This has been an
enjoyable process from my perspective as discipline leader, and I would like to
formally thank you for making this happen, and particularly Ron Kordyban and
Christian King for their hard work and enthusiasm over the past 12 months.
The attached summary highlights the scope of work that took place across all
subjects in the degree. The real successes for me were the work we did together
around digital badging and gamification, and the development of the Risky Business
simulation.
I have come to see blended learning not simply as a mix of online and traditional
learning strategies, but rather the harmonious integration of various student-
centred learning experiences to enrich traditional [face-to-face] teaching. I really
like this definition.
In regard to digital badges and gamification, we have now successfully piloted a
course-wide approach to recognise student performance in all 11 core knowledge
areas for the discipline. With Christian’s critical input, we have now 11 badge
designs each in three levels (gold, silver and bronze) that students can earn over
their time at Bond. Upon graduation, the student with the highest score in badge
values (gold=20, silver=10, bronze=5) given a minimum score of 100 receives the
new PMIQ Award ($500/semester). Our first winning graduate receives their award
this week. His name is Damon Barbaresco.
We use credly.com as the tool for issuing and displaying badges for graduates.
Badges can be uploaded to Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or Mozilla Backpack easily
and become a permanent record of personal achievement. We would like to
continue from the pilot study, making this a hallmark of project management at
Bond, and rolling out remaining badges linked to extracurricular activities that can
further support graduate employability. In my opinion this initiative has assisted us
to gain Australian Institute of Project Management accreditation, and will be
influential in next month’s vital Project Management Institute international
accreditation visit. So it was definitely worth the time and effort. Below is a
summary of Damon’s credly.com page displaying his achievements as an example:
In regard to Risky Business, Christian’s input was again critical. The end result is
spectacular, and is being used next week in Professor Michael Regan’s Risk
Management subject. We think this is not only useful for our students in teaching
them fundamental decision-making and judgment skills, but has value for other
project management students around the world. We are yet to explore the
possibilities this might bring.
The one thing we didn’t manage to achieve to date is the MOOC initiative. I suspect
Bond is not ready for this yet. However, Professor Lynn Crawford and I have
applied to PMI to develop the content for a MOOC that they would manage. We are
seeking US$100,000 from PMI to coordinate the project and pay leading speakers
from around the world to participate with video presentations. If we win this
project, then any global PM course provider could choose to build this content into
their programs for free. So rather than a Bond project, which sadly was not
possible, it may be a PMI project with the same outcomes and benefits that we
originally envisaged. It would also be available as professional development to their
600,000 members. So we are pretty confident.
I believe our degrees have been significantly enhanced from these activities, and I
think we are now well placed to be a valued player in the global education of
project managers. Our student numbers have increased from 10 in 2013 to 52
today, and I believe we will reach 70 by January. In my Principles of Project
Management subject, which is delivered using a flipped classroom model, I have
taught over 150 students in the last 12 months. Every semester the numbers grow
from word of mouth as an elective choice, and from the new combined degree
pathways with other courses in FSD, HSM and Business.
So thanks again. We are very appreciative. Please pass on my congratulations to
Ron and Christian for their excellent work. I have awarded them the following
digital badge as well!
Yours sincerely
