GUIDING CONCERNS OF THE PROJECT Sustainable tourism is envisaged as leading to management of all resources in such a way that economic, social and aesthetic needs can be fulfilled while maintaining cultural integrity, essential ecological processes, biological diversity and life support systems - United Nations World Tourism Organization ECO _TOURISM Minimize Impact, Build Awareness & Respect Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following ecotourism principles : . minimize impact . build environmental and cultural awareness and respect . provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts . provide direct financial benefits for conservation . provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people . raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate
SOME KEY FEATURES BEING INTEGRATED THE PROJECT INCLUDE: TRADITIONAL LAND USE The land that the resort is being developed on was traditionally a farm land. Our attempt is to revive the site as a Bio-dynamic farm. This would have multiple benefits: - Would revive land use patterns and diversity, optimize use of land. - Would provide organic food and vegetables for the guests and staff of the project. - Would allow Guests (largely an urban audience that would include families with children) to first hand experience indigenous farming techniques – a Rural lifestyle - Would empower local farmers by propagating Bio-dynamic / Organic farming techniques among them. GREEN PLANNING & ARCHITECTURE - Locally available materials and skills used together with contemporary building techniques. - Use of recycled material wherever possible - Use of passive cooling / heating techniques - Use of alternate energy sources such as solar / wind (subject to studies), - Grey water recycling, rainwater harvesting & storage, - Use of locally available skills such as weaving , pottery, etc evolved further with contemporary design intervention to produce a range of products for use in the resort. These could also be marketed by the artisans themselves through cooperative initiatives. INCLUSIVE OPERATIONS Local people would be used to staff the resort as far as possible to deliver an authentic Himachali experience The resort would partner with local villages and communities to offer guests a sampling of authentic local customs and traditions Local cuisine along with variations would be served at the resort restaurants
