NOVEMBER 11
Looking at the Transcript
• Each inter-title is placed between sequences of action,
showing the characters and their situation. Because of the
genre (crime thriller) the inter-titles do not reveal much, not
even the characters or setting, leaving more suspense for the
audience and putting much of the attention on the visuals.
• The overall purpose of the inter-title seems to be to give more
of an insight into the narrative of the film rather than reveal the
settings of characters.
• We are introduced to the stars of the film and the production
companies but most importantly, the title of the film. The title is
capitalized and slowly forms on the screen, having a lasting
effect in the mind, making us remember it.
• This is then followed by the release date which is equally
important. As this is the last thing that is shown, it will stick in
the mind of the audience, being the last thing they saw.
Looking at the Transcript
• All of the inter-titles used are in the form of statements,
leaving no hesitation for the audience, telling them
exactly what the narrative is.
• They are also very direct, giving a sense of power and
strength and the way they seem to hit the screen as
they are shown makes them hard-hitting and the
audience have no choice but to read them.
• Also, the way that the phrase ‘Until it’s too late’ has
been split into single words shown one at a time works
alongside the build-up of the trailer, adding suspense
and increasing the tension within the trailer. It also
means the audience have to continue watching to
finish reading.
Looking at the Transcript
• The film title is also repeated during the inter-titles
but through using the word ‘Derail’ rather than
‘Derailed’.
• This is even before we learn the name of the film,
reinforcing its title and giving a sense of turmoil
and negativity, as if something is spiralling out of
control like a train coming off of the tracks. This
also reinforces the genre as this sort of feeling is
expected of a thriller and is typically a convention.
• The statements are also short and snappy so it is
not too much for the audience to take in in a short
amount of time.
Overall…
• All of these elements are things that I will take into
consideration when I write my trailer transcript.
• I will not have more knowledge on how the inter-titles
are structured and will be able to work them
around aspects of dialogue.
• I have also been able to identify what the most
important titles are and where they will come
during the trailer (e.g. film title, release date)
• I have also gained an understanding of what sort
of statements should be used and will follow the
idea of them being short and informative, making
them easier for the audience to take in and follow.
