Critical Perspective on Language and Discourse
What is language?
 way of interacting with the people around us
 a system of communicating
 to communicate effectively, using gesture-body
movement
 listening and speaking both important for
communication
 to express inner thought and emotion
 it is not only content, it is also context
language can be….
Function /importance of language
 language is not only a way to
communicate, but also a way to live the
culture where a language is spoken
 main goal of language teacher is to
provide students with the tools to be
effective communicators in the teaching
language
Language as a symbol
 grammar,
pronunciation and
sentence pattern also
matters in language
 language awareness operates on three distinctive
levels:
The cognitive
level, referring
to awareness
of language
pattern
The affective
level, with
regards to
forming
attitudes
The social
level, which
reference the
improvement
of learners
effectiveness-raising,
facilitates
language
Discourse can be….
What is discourse?
 the study of the ways in which language is used in
text and context
 study of language independently of the notion of
the sentence
 it examining the relation between a text and the
situation in which it occurs
 it also part of one type of communicative
competence
 discourse competence: is generally the ability to
understand and express oneself in a given language
Discourse can be defined in three ways
Discourse analysis
 interdisciplinary approach to the study of
discourse that views language as a form of
social practice and focuses on the ways social
and political domination are reproduced in
text and talk
Discourse analysis as a part of textual analysis:
Critical Perspective on Language and Discourse
Discourse analysts,
interested in three
question
a. who wrote the
notice and to
whom?
b. how do we know
what it means?
c. what factors played
a role in this?
 interested in things
“well-formed”
conclusion
 discourse and language transformation are
ascribed to progress or the need to develop
new or the need to develop new or more
”accurate” words to describe new discoveries,
understandings, or areas of interest
 language and discourse are dissociated power
and ideology and instead conceptualized as
“natural” product of common sense usage or
progress
