INTRODUCTION • The Central Reserve Police Force also known as CRPF is a paramilitary security agency/Force functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India. • The CRPF's primary role lies in assisting the State/Union Territories in police operations to maintain law and order and contain insurgency. • It came into existence as the Crown Representative's Police on 27 July 1939. After Indian Independence, it became the Central Reserve Police Force on enactment of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949. • In 2008 a wing called Combat Battalions for Resolute Action (Cobra) was added to the CRPF to counter the Naxalite movement.

Organizational Set-up of the Force • The Force Hqrs of Central Reserve Police Force is located at Block No. 1, CGO Complex, and Lodi Road, New Delhi. • It is headed by Director General, who is assisted by 3 Addl. Role and Functions of the CRPF • The Central Reserve Police Force is an armed Force of the Union of India, with the basic role of striking reserve to assist the State/Union Territories in Police operations to maintain law and order and contain insurgency. • Crowd control • Dealing with Left Wing Extremism, counter terrorism, special weapons operations. • Insurgency operations. • Overall co-ordination of large scale security arrangement especially with regard to elections in disturbed areas. • Rescue and Relief operations at the time of Natural Calamities. • Checking environmental de-gradation and protection of local Flora and Fauna.

- 10. Women in the CRPF • The CRPF is the only Paramilitary Force in the world to have two battalions staffed entirely by women. The first battalion was raised in 1986 with its headquarters at New Delhi. • The second battalion came into existence in 1996 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

CRPF Weapons • CRPF uses basic Infantry weapons. • Infantrymen are soldiers who are specifically trained for the role of fighting on foot to engage the enemy face to face and have historically borne the brunt of the casualties of combat in wars. • Infantry units have more physically demanding training than other branches of armies, and place a greater emphasis on discipline, fitness, physical strength and aggression. • FN 35 and Clock 17 9 mm pistols • Heckler & Koch MP5 replacing the Carbine 1A 9 mm sub-machine guns • INSAS 5.56 mm assault rifles • AGS-17 Plamya 30 mm automatic grenade launcher • AK 47 and AKM

COBRA • In 2008 a wing called Combat Battalions for Resolute Action (Cobra) was added to the CRPF to counter the Naxalite Naxalite problem in India. • This specialized CRPF unit is one of the only paramilitary forces in the country who are specifically trained in guerrilla warfare. • This elite fighting unit has been trained to track, hunt and eliminate small Naxalite groups. • Cobras are trained in the Army’s elite Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram and CRPF’s anti-terrorist school in Silchar. • Their role is to carry out reconnaissance and long range patrols, gather intelligence on the whereabouts of the insurgents, and also carry out ambushes and precision strikes when required.

- 16. CONTD. • Born on September 15th, 1952, Mr. K. Vijay Kumar IPS is the son of Mr. Krishnan Nair and Mrs.Kousalya. He is the second son in a family of six. Mr. Krishnan Nair was a retired police officer. He joined the IPS on 10-11-1975. • He served as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Pattukkottai, Trichy and Sembiam (Chennai). As Superintendent of Police, he served Dharmapuri, Salem (1977-1985). • Mr. Vijay Kumar spent most of his time with Mr. Walter Dawaram. As a young officer, Mr. Vijay Kumar was always impressed with the courage of his role model Mr. Walter Dawaram IPS.
