AN INTRODUCTION
TO
PADMA MULTIPURPOSE BRIDGE PROJECT
PREPARED BY
BANGLADESH ARMY, CSC FOR APPROACH ROAD
AND SERVICE AREA-2
1
A GENERAL INTRODUCTION TO
THE PMBP
The Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project (PMBP), approximately 40 km south west of
Dhaka comprises a new fixed crossing of the Padma River in Bangladesh. It will consist of
a new bridge approximately 6.15 km long across the Padma River; approach viaducts;
major river training works; approximately 11 km of Approach Road in the Janjira side and
1.67 km in the Mawa side; bridge end facilities, including toll plazas, service areas and
implemented with the support of the
government of Bangladesh (GoB) as
financier, National and International
consultants, advisors, experts and
contractors. After the completion of the
bridge it will unite the two parts of
Bangladesh divided by the river Padma. As
a result the use of Mongla port located at
Khulna will be optimized and natural and
industrial products can be transported
towards Dhaka, the capital city from the
South Western region of Bangladesh.
offices. The main bridge will carry a 4-lane
highway and have provisions for future
installation of a broad gauge rail line as well as
other facilities including gas, power
transmission and telecommunication lines.
Detailed Design of the Project was done by the
Design Consultant Maunsell AECOM, New
Zealand. Padma Multipurpose Bridge Project
is a complex mega project which will be

DESIGN OF RIVER TRAINING WORK
The specified design life of the crossing, including the river training works
is 100 years. The design flood for the river training works has a return
period of 100 years and slope protection is designed to withstand the 100-
year significant wave condition. Scour protection aprons will be provided
at all RTW structures to prevent undermining of the RTW
embankment/revetment slopes.

PROJECT FEATURE AND CHALLENGES
NATURE OF PADMA RIVER
COORDINATION DIFFICULTIES
The river divides the country into two parts. During monsoon it becomes very rough with huge scouring
of the bed. The river bed profile changes frequently. Current may raise upto 5 meter per sec.
Coordination with three construction farms and two consultants along with the local administration,
different utility service agencies and local population is a great challenge for the client in this project.

During monsoon it becomes very rough with huge scouring of the bed. The river bed profile changes frequently. Current may raise upto 5 meter per sec. Coordination with three construction farms and two consultants along with the local administration, different utility service agencies and local population is a great challenge for the client in this project.
