- 6. Pohela Boishak Pohela boishak is the first day of Bengali new year. In Bengali, Pohela means ‘first’. Baisakh is the first month of the Bengali calendar. On this day whole Bangladesh is in festival mode. A number of delicacies including ilish maach, dhokar dalna, rice, and chanar dal are prepared to welcome the New Year.

The only big difference is the Kurbani or sacrifice of domestic animals(usually cows, goats, and sheep). In the morning on the Eid day, immediately after the prayer, affluent people thank God for the animal and then sacrifice it. They distribute the meets to their relatives and poor people.
