WORK HISTORY
Retired (February 2015 to Present)
I prepared a Business Plan for bio-diesel manufacture from tallow, and another using waste materials from Rand
Water (sludge) and Eskom (ash) for making brocks.
Eskom (October 2013 – Jan 2015) Lead HVAC Engineer at Medupi Power Station (Contract)
I was employed to supervise site construction of 34 HVAC installations at the Medupi Power Station, which
involved the checking of drawings and calculations, chairing progress meetings, and witnessing pressure tests
and balancing of ducting.
Smart Piping Supply (March 2013 – September 2013) Technical Manager (Limited Contract)
The company installs water-based under-floor heating and solar energy hot water systems in large houses and
small industry. I was hired to carry out design verification calculations, prepare schematic and layout drawings ’
and to supervise the installation of various systems.
Jacobs Matasis Engineering (August 2012 to Dec2012) Senior Engineer (Contract)
For the initial pre-feasibility study for an oil storage depot in Richards Bay, I prepared enquiry documents,
specifications and technical bid analyses for the purchase of 12 packages including pumps, tanks and LPG
vessels, and was fully involved in the preparation of the costs for the final report.
I returned later to do the further feasibility study/value engineering and more detailed costing. For this I prepared
new specifications for 6 components, and wrote a further 5 reports on the sizes of the LPG vessels, the proposed
rail layouts and the proposed loading arms arrangement at the berth.
In between the studies I assisted in the preparation of piping schedules and BOQ’s, measurement of piping
layouts, and preparation of specifications for sampling stations and a mechanical interlock system for relief
valves.
Bateman (September 2011 to July 2012) Mechanical Engineer (Contract)
I prepared enquiry documents and technical bid analyses for the purchase of 9 Packages (including and
compressed air package) and the SMPP contract for Plate-work and Piping on a Mineral Sands project.
Subsequently I prepared enquiry documents and Technical Bid Analyses for 30 packages on 2 coal mine
projects and 5 packages for a gold mine project.
Recently, for a iron ore project, I prepared a plate-work BOQ, a craneage study, and started doing chute
calculations/checks, and prepared requisitions for 8 packages.

Lesedi Nuclear Services (October 2010 –July 2011) Senior Design Check Engineer
Initially I carried out design checks on junior engineers’ work, and acted as a mentor to 3 young engineers. Often
I resolved piping queries on a the Medupi Power Station Project. In addition I also designed thrust blocks and
valve chambers on a buried 600 mm diameter by 3 km long pipeline.

Kumba Resources (August 2004 – August 2005) Project Process Engineer/Construction Manager

I initially evaluated bids and prepared orders for the Jig plant, stacker and reclaimer, crusher relocation and
ramps and platforms for the LeeuPan Coal Mine in Delmas. Engineering was complete by December 2004 and
construction on site started in January 2005. The construction was completed and handed over during August
2005.

Foster Wheeler (November 2001 – August 2004) Lead Package/Project Engineer (Contract)
On the Waste Recovery Facility I was responsible for the following packages - Lime addition, Polymer Addition,
Soda Ash Addition, Powered Activated Carbon (PAC), Thermal Oxidiser, DAF, API Separator, and Filter press.
This involved the preparation of the purchase enquiry documents, the bid adjudication, order placement, review
of documents and liaison between various disciplines.
On the Temane Gas Project for Sasol, acted as lead project package engineer for the TEG, refrigeration, fired
heater and flare packages. I had two more junior engineers reporting to me and managing other packages –
effluent system, potable water, incinerator, Nitrogen generation system, and the condensate loading. Total value
exceeded R80 million. Refrigeration packages each had an 1140kW electrically driven propane compressor.
Total value of project = R5 billion
Anglo American (Jan 2001 – Sept 2001) PROJECT MECHANICAL ENGINEER (Contract)
I formed part of the owner’s team supervising the design and construction of a new zinc mine in Namibia.
Provided input into design of various facilities and equipment, checked drawings for approval/acceptability,

participated in Hazop studies, provided input into Inspection function (especially FRP vessels), and led tank
drawing team. Areas covered were tanks (steel, concrete, FRP and Stebbins), pumps, piping, vessels and heat
exchangers, stacker/reclaimer, HVAC and firefighting facilities, blowers and compressors.

ETS (June 2000 – Dec 2000) SITE CONSTRUCTION MANAGER (Contract)
I supervised the construction of new Elution Plant on at a mine near Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. The work consisted
of installing structural steelwork, tanks, pumps, piping and steam generation facilities. The pressure vessels
were fabricated locally. Because of certain staffing problems, I was both construction manager for the consulting
engineers and construction supervisor for the contractor.
MOODY INTERNATIONAL (July 1999 – May 2000) BRANCH MANAGER
I managed the Durban office of this international firm dealing with inspections, particularly of pressure vessels.
The local staff consisted of 5 inspectors, a welding technician and secretary. My main task was to carry out
statutory design checks/calculations for new pressure vessels using PVElite computer program, and I also re-
rated various heat exchangers for a Sasolburg Refinery. As office manager I was consulted when the inspectors
had difficulties in their inspection duties.
Technical. While at Moody, we were twice askedto advise on the repairs to tanks whose suspended floors were
suspect due to corrosion in the tank walls. In both cases I advised that the client should pour concrete into the
areas below the floor, as this was the most economic solution, and both accepted this advice and are currently
implementing this solution.
Marketing. We were approached by Protokon/Portnet regarding the inspection of the replacement of 32 km of
the main oil pipeline from the coast to the Reef. Previous experience with our company had not been favourable,
and they were not at all keen to use us. We managed to convince them otherwise, and they have used us on
additional work since then, and have indicated that they are very happy with our performance.
Computer Programs. I was asked by a small company that markets a newly developed computer program that
designs pressure vessels, to check the calculations that their program performed in the design of a small filter.
I found a number of small, but not insignificant, errors in the first few sections of the program, and this company
has corrected the program in accordance with my comments. As they do more complicated equipment I expect
that this design checking will continue, since they are very astutely using actual design work to debug their
computer program as a sideline.

FLUOR ENGINEERS (December 1995 - June 1999) SENIOR DESIGN ENGINEER
Prepared contract/purchase documents and managed the construction for (i) a Waste Heat Boiler, Stack and
Ducting for a Cape Town Refinery, and (ii) ventilation/air conditioning for electrical rooms in Vereeniging
On Hulett Aluminium project, prepared piping conceptual layouts for all services and utilities
(compressed air, cooling towers, LPG storage, fans and ducting), and investigated actual usage rates of
compressed air in various areas.
For a Muffin Factory, prepared purchase orders for compressors, pumps, heaters, scales, agitators,
sealers and various small items.
For the various oil refineries, managed various major projects. Activities involved were the preparation
of purchase documents for heat exchangers and pressure vessels, review of drawings, checking thermal and
mechanical design calculations, inspections at manufacturer's works and supervision of installation and
commissioning.
Technical. During my time at Fluor, it became obvious that it would be advantageous to be proficient in the
design of pressure vessels, as I already had experience in rotating equipment and vendor packages, the other
two main areas of interest for mechanical engineers. I set about training myself in the design calculations
associated with pressure vessels as detailed in ASME VIII and BS5500, and did the necessary calculations for
the various components first by hand, and then in the programs Lotus 123 and later in Microsoft Excel. Later I
was able to get access to the program CoadeCalc which Fluor engineers used to design and check the
calculations, and became fairly proficient in its use.
PGBI (December 1994 - October 1995) (Contract) SITE OFFICE MANAGER

Supervised Drawing Office and engineers involved in preparation of walk-down drawings for piping and
instrumentation diagrams (P & I D's) on CAD for chemical company at Modderfontein, mainly on coal handling
systems, coal fired boiler, gasifiers, gas compressors and vessels. Carried out accuracy checks, classified all
equipment for the data-base, and updated check sheets.
Technical - Drawing Office. I carried out the walk-down checks on both piping and instruments by myself for
about 2 months and became reasonably adept at this. I was then asked to be in charge of the drawing office
associated with this work (4 ladies who worked 10 hours a day for 6 days a week) and the 3
draughtsmen/engineers who did the actual walk -downs and prepared the sketches for the CAD department.
One of the first things I did was to increase the number of standard drawings in the "library". Since we were
trying to make the drawings as useful as possible for future training and design work, I insisted that the various
items be drawn similar to their appearance in the field, and not with standard symbols which is the norm.
Fortunately the client and my superiors were very enthusiastic about this concept, because it was, in the end,
slightly more expensive. Later on, one of the trainers, who had been there for 20 years, told me that our drawing
of the gasifier was so clear that it was the first time he had properly understood what was happening.
ANGLO-AMERICAN CORPORATION (Feb 1994 - December 1994) (Contract) SENIOR ENGINEER
As Senior Mechanical Engineer in the Mechanical Design Section at Head Office:
a) I calculated pipeline sizes and chose pumps for slurry and water handling facilities
b) carried out check calculations for stresses in thinning of high pressure pipe bends, bolt stresses in
flanges, stresses in screwed rods and other components (for winder brakes), water hammer in pipelines,
and friction losses in pipelines
c) I reviewed drawings for winder brake components
d) I investigated air flow rates in problem areas.
FLUOR ENGINEERS (June 1993 - Feb 1994) (Contract) PRINCIPAL ENGINEER
Prepared specifications purchase requisitions, capital cost estimates and maintenance and operating costs for;
conveyor drives, pulley, idlers, holdbacks, brakes, belting, metal detectors, magnetic pulleys, magnetic
separators, wet scrubbers, hydraulic power packs and cylinders.
All this work was for the feasibility study we carried out for Palaborwa Mining, when they were interested in
sinking shafts as the open hole was now too deep to be mined economically. I was involved in much conceptual
work regarding hydraulics, ring mains and such.
BATEMAN WATER TREATMENT (Feb 1993 - June 1993) (Contract) SENIOR ENGINEER
I carried out design check calculations for sewage treatment plant - heat loads on piping, strength of bridge
components, friction losses in piping, rating of gearboxes, pumps and cooling tower.
BADGER AFRICA/EMS (December 1991 - September 1992) (Contract) SENIOR ENGINEER
Project managed various pumps, cooling towers and associated dosing packages, an air dryer system, a
demineralised water package, and air conditioning of one area.
Investigated the performance of the existing air dryer system (and determined it could not be upgraded),
also in preparing line lists, equipment lists, hazops worksheets, action lists and licensor data.
FLUOR ENGINEERS (S A) (July 1989 - Nov 1991) (Contract) PRINCIPAL ENGINEER
On the Mossel Bay Refinery contract, managed the mechanical aspects, from the preparation of purchase
documents to the final commissioning for pumps, dosing packages, scales, pig launchers and receivers, heat
exchangers, mixers and cooling towers; etc. My duties included the technical bid evaluations, order placement,
checking of drawings, various liaison duties (chairing meetings, following up on progress/promises) and
supervision of installation and performance measurement.
For Genref expansion, projects involved the design, installation and commissioning of cooling towers,
in-line and side entry mixers, air conditioning in control rooms, ventilation in substations, and filters for air
compressors.
Capital value of project = R10 billion.

RAND WATER BOARD (Nov 1987 - July 1989) SENIOR ENGINEER
Prepared design calculation and purchase specifications/drawings, and supervised installation of the following:
a) Air conditioning for a control room and a computer room.
b) Dust extraction and collection equipment on limestone conveyors.
c) A portable sterilisation unit for sampling points. This unit had been through about six design changes
over the past 4 years, mainly because the chemicals handled were very corrosive and required exotic
materials in its construction. I discovered that the chemicals could be put in the unit and pumped into
the water lines in one operation lasting at most half an hour, and that if the unit was then flushed out,
then the exotic materials were not required. End of problem.
d) Mobile trippers and conveyors for limestone handling.
e) Ventilation systems.
f) Sand removal gantries.
g) Various small pump installations.
h) Also commissioned and performance tested 4 x 2 MW vertical pumpsets.
Technical - Using sludge to make bricks. From various lunchtime talks with other staff, I became interested in
the disposal of sludge, the residue of dirt and chemical that is left after the water is cleaned. Until very recently
the sludge was pumped down disused mineshafts where it could not contaminate the surrounding ground-water.
Some of these mineshafts, however, had started leaking, suitable alternatives were not available and the
attendant publicity was embarrassing.
The Board had carried out various tests on the sludge to use it up in some useful product, but could not
find any way to use it. Their solution was to start dumping the sludge on useful ground - about 4 rugby fields
about 4 metres deep every year was the result. This was going to be an ongoing environmental nightmare.
A friend and I obtained samples of the sludge and started carrying out experiments - but to no avail. We
then traced someone who made concrete block of lightweight concrete ("Gasbeton"), and he offered to carry out
experiments. He made a brick consisting of 80% sludge, 10% ash and 10% cement, and then heated it in an
autoclave for 24 hours. (Using an autoclave for concrete or related products is unknown in this country). He
made an acceptable brick from this product and we had it tested by the SABS/CSIR for various properties, and
they reported that it was acceptable in all important respects.

KANTEY AND TEMPLER (Consulting Engineers) (October 1983 - October 1987) GROUP
MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL ENGINEER
Responsible completely for the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of:
a) Two pump stations, two mixing stations, a power station (8 MW), and an 8 km salt water ring main
system in Durban.
b) Similar but smaller schemes in Port Elizabeth and Alberton.
c) Fixed firefighting facilities at 12 oil company sites.
Work included a feasibility study, alternatives, cost for each scheme, mechanical/electrical and civil
design, preparation of construction drawings, specifications, tender documents, evaluation and award of
tenders, site supervision and commissioning of the facilities and some liaison. I also prepared specifications
and designs for fresh water pumps and pipelines, air conditioning and sprinklers.
Conceptual Design Work. When I arrived, it had already been decided, in consultation with all the oil companies
and the Government, that the foam concentrate would be added to the seawater at the entrance to each site.
The cost of each mixing station, at the time, was about a million rand, and the cost, of the concentrate for each
station, another million rand. After a few weeks on this project, I suddenly had the idea that we should install
two central mixing stations, each capable of meeting the requirements of two sites at the same time, and send
the mixed product down the pipeline instead of sea water only. The saving was about R40 million, and all the
oil companies were very enthusiastic since they had no room for mixing stations on their sites and also did not
want to maintain the equipment in the stations. Needless to say, the Durban Corporation, who had to maintain
the whole arrangement, was much less enthusiastic.
The capital value of the above projects exceeded R300 million.

the electrical reticulation master plan for Darling.

Supervised all maintenance work and expansion/modifications, introduced Factories Act requirements, prepared
registers, new safety practices, and improved machine guarding. I supervised 2 foremen and 25
artisans/helpers.
Chaired the monthly safety meetings, trained the new Loss Control Officer, headed the monthly "Good
Housekeeping" inspection teams and gave safety talks. Investigated the efficient use of electricity, and installed
power factor correction equipment. Introduced machine numbering system, and did inventory for the asset
register. I reduced the breakdown delays in one section from above 30% to below 20%.
OIL COMPANY OF MALAWI ('SHELL") (January 1979 - December 1981) (Contract) AVIATION AND
ENGINEERING MANAGER
As Engineering Manager - responsible for:
a) Pump Servicing (installation and maintenance of pumps and tanks).
b) Vehicle Maintenance (including modifications to reduce cracking in the ends).
c) Aviation task force (which maintained all equipment in ordinary and aviation depots and specialised
aviation vehicles).
Capital budget was R1 000 000 per year, and included a new aviation depot.
As Aviation Manger - negotiated contracts with the major customers, dealt with customer queries/complaints,
provided information to (London) headquarters, carried out regular inspections of all aviation facilities to ensure
that they were properly maintained, and trained airport staff. I introduced Management by Objectives and a
standard performance appraisal.
I also investigated commercial feasibility of installing a pipeline from the coast to Malawi, building a refinery
locally, and the modifications needed to blend ethanol with our fuels.

MOBIL REFINING CO (now Engen) (Durban) (Feb 1974 - Dec 1978) SENIOR ENGINEER
Supervised the design, installation and commissioning of many pump and piping installations, tanks, a boiler,
packaging machinery and conveyors, a new office block, revamping of the LPG area, a new rail spur, drainage
and other civil works, platforms and steel structures, some instrumentation and electrical installations. I also,
studied failures of materials, inspected equipment for wear and corrosion during shutdown periods, and
inspected new equipment and facilities before commissioning.

MANAGER
As Production Manager in the Paper Sack division, learned the machine adjustment/operation, liaised with the
sales department, and resolved production problems. Doubled the output of one type of sack, and redesigned
the production planning boards. In the Extrusion Coating division, ran trials on the optimum efficiency of the
extruder, trials on a new type of insulation (sisalation) and designed modifications to the extruder to run different
widths of material more efficiently.
VAN LEER PACKAGING (Durban) (May 1970 - April 1972) PLANT ENGINEER
Learnt the machine adjustments and production techniques of making metal drums, then drew layouts and
modifications to mould and dies, and designed simple machines.
After promotion to Plant Engineer, ran the maintenance section of 20 artisans/helpers, modified machines to
reduce breakdowns and adjustment times, installed a new blow-moulder, and re-organised the press section.
Set objectives, participated in planning meetings, and carried out performance appraisals.
