By Harry Spong
Design Brief
• I am going to design and make a point of sale display unit
that will make my chosen brand, Old Spice, promote their
products. Statistics show that more people are likely to buy a
product if it has an attractive display.
• The device will be a temporary fixture so that it can be
moved around, easy to set up and control and also cheap to
make. It must be powered by mains voltage and in this way it
will be completely safe to be left on for a long time.
Design Situation
• Research has shown that many people buy products through
impulse and they are attracted to the product because of the
eye-catching product display unit
• I have done some research on my chosen brand, Old
Spice, and I have noticed that they do not have any point of
sale displays in shops. Old Spice have very strong T.V
advertising campaigns. Old Spice have limited their target
market because they only advertise their brand through T.V
ads and social media. I aim to try to incorporate these
advertising methods within a point of sale display unit.
INITIAL SPECIFICATION
AESTHETICS: I will make my design my point of sale with
bright colours and eye-catching features. I need to make my
display bright to attract attention of potential customers but
not too bright that it puts them off.
COST: I will aim to make my point of sale as cheap as
possible to keep costs to a minimum. I will use as little
materials as possible to reduce waste products and make my
display more environmentally friendly.
CUSTOMER: I think my target market is young, aged 16-30
and male. But potential customers could be female because
they could be buying the product as a gift.
ENVIRONMENT: I think my point of sale display will be in a
supermarket next to similar products in the corresponding
department.
SIZE: My display unit will need to be big enough to hold at
least three Old Spice products to be able to promote their
latest products and I would like to keep it to a minimalist look.
SAFETY: No sharp edges, no loose wires, water-
proof, energy efficient
FUNCTION: My point of sale display must be able to hold
and display Old Spice products and promote their brand. I
will make my display interactive to hold my customer’s
attention longer for longer.
MATERIALS: I will use materials that are environmentally
friendly, easily recyclable and make it sustainable. Potential
materials that I may use are: cardboard, plastic, wood and
metal.

MATERIALS
FUNCTION
SIZE
I will try to keep costs to a
minimum and only use the
least amount of materials as
possible. By doing this, I will
decrease waste materials
and make my design more
environmentally friendly
I will not leave exposed or
trailing wires and have no sharp
edges. By doing this I will
increase the safety of potential
customers. By having no wires
exposed no one can be
electrocuted or injured because
of sharp edges.
My point of sale display must be able to hold and display Old
Spice products and promote their brand. I cannot decide
whether or not to power my display via batteries or mains
power. If I was to use mains I would have a constant supply
of power but you are limited to where you can place the
display. If I was to use batteries to power my display I have
more ability to move it around but the batteries would have to
be replaced regularly. I will make my display interactive to
hold my customer’s attention longer
Potential materials that
I may use in my
design are:
wood, metal, acrylic, al
uminium, carbon fibre
and cardboard. I am
considering these
materials because
they are hard-wearing
and sustainable
I think my customer
would be male but
could be female
buying a gift for a
male person. I think
my customer will be
between the age of
16-30
I will make
my display
eye-catching
and bright
but not
include too
much visual
noise. By
doing this my
customer will
not be put off
because the
colour
scheme is
too bright
I will make my point
of sale display at
least 50cm wide, 50
cm deep and
150cm high. I will
do this because this
tends to be the
norm with all point
of sale displays

Market analysis
Old Spice
The Shulton Company were the original producers of Old Spice
and was founded in 1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz. The first
Old Spice product was intended for females, introduced in 1937.
Old Spice for men followed in 1938. I think the target market of
this company is teenagers and young men because it is a low
end and cheap product. Fish started in 1987. In 2002, Fish launched their range of
products for Boots stores. I think the target market for this
brand is teenagers and men. I think this is a trendy brand
because it is sold in fashionable locations.
Fish
Lynx is also known as axe and was introduced by the
company, Unilever in 1983. The target market for this brand is young
males because the adverts show a young man being swamped by
women and all young men want to be like that. Lynx use a range of
advertising techniques such as TV adverts to attract attention to their
products
LYNX
Hackett was founded in 1979 and is a high end
brand and its target market is middle-aged
businessmen who wear suits to work. I think this
is a high end product because it is sold in
Harrods and other expensive stores in London
Hackett
Mr Natty products are made in England. I think the target
market for this brand is older men because it is an old
fashioned product and is mainly about moustache products.
Mr Natty
L'Oreal was founded in 1909 and use a range of
advertising techniques such as TV ads and posters which
attract customers to buy their products. I think the target
market for this brand is a middle class older man because
it mostly sells skin care products.

Brand Analysis of Old Spice
HISTORY
• The Old Spice brand was
founded in 1934 by William
Lightfoot Schultz.
• The Shulton Company were the
original producer of Old Spice.
• In 1938 Old Spice released a
product range for men.
• This range was mainly
dominated by shaving soaps
and aftershave lotions.
• A total of 14 sailing ships have
been used on the packaging of
Old Spice so far.
• Over the last ten years Old
Spice has introduced many
variations of body washes, body
sprays and deodorants.
• Procter & Gamble (P&G)
bought Old Spice in 1990.
• In 1992, they replaced the
sailing ship logo with a modern
looking yacht design.
• Over the years the marketing
team behind the Old Spice
brand have used many different
people to appear in their
advertising campaigns.
• The most famous person who
featured in many of the Old
Spice commercials is Terry
Crews, who appeared in the ‘16
hour odour blocker’
commercials.
• The Old Spice brand is also
well known for its association
with a catchy whistle jingle.
• In the last few years the whole
Old Spice brand has been
rebranded in terms of their logo,
products etc.
• The brand has a newly updated
and very interactive
website, which highlights the full
range of products by Old Spice.
• The potential customers
accessing the website have the
ability to view all products
available to buy, as well as the
ability to download wallpapers
and ringtones. This clearly
demonstrates that the product is
aimed at young people.
• In July 2010, Old Spice
launched the fastest growing
online viral video campaign
ever. The commercial attracted
6.7 million views within 24
hours which then rocketed to 23
million in 36 hours.

Illogical
• To put too little information on the display
• Place the display in the wrong place in the shop
• Create too much visual noise so the customer is put off
• To prevent the customer from gaining direct access to the product
• Show confusing messages to the customer
• To over-advertise the price when the price is quite high
Need

• To display the product being sold
• Make the display interactive to hold the customer’s attention
• To display relevant information
• To make the products secure so they cannot be stolen or damaged

• Allows customer access to products
• Catches the customer’s eye
• Holds the customer’s attention
• Recyclable

• Makes the display modern and imaginative without compromising
safety
• Makes the display stand out using bright colours but without putting
the customer off because of too much visual noise

highlighting Aesthetics, Customer, Cost,
Environment, Size, Safety, Function and
Materials.
Mood Board To find out what images convey the theme
of the product.
I will collect a range of images that convey
the theme of the product and what sort of
images are used in the product’s
advertising (e.g. who the product is aimed
at).
Market Research To find out about the current male grooming
product market and some of the brands
within it.
I will research Old Spice, Mr Natty, L’Oreal
Men Expert, Fish, Hackett and Lynx. I will
place some background information on
each brand on a slide along with a few
products of the brand as well.
First Hand Existing Design Analysis To find out about already existing point of
sale display designs.
I will collect 15 images and then identify the
key features of each.

chosen brand, Old Spice.
I will use the internet to find out about the
history of Old Spice.
10 Minute Observation To see what features attract the customers
attention.
I will observe two point of sale displays for
10 minutes
Interviews To find out peoples opinions of point of
sales.
Conduct a short interview with people while
they are completing my questionnaire.

Research
Below is a plan of action for my research. I will use this to structure and manage my time while I am
carrying out my research. I will start my research on the 29th September 2012 and will complete it by the
11th October 2012.
Questionnaire
Opposite are three questions that will help me determine
what features to include in my point of sale display, together
with how long people will be prepared to spend at the point
of sale and the position they would like to see it in the shop.
From this questionnaire I have learnt that people in different
age groups prefer different things:
• I have learnt from my questionnaire that overall
people prefer presentations, colours and visual
effects. However, my target market, 16-30 year
olds, prefer sounds and interactivity.
• I have learnt that overall people only interact for
around a minute. My target market often tends
to spend 1-5 minutes interacting with the display
• I have learnt that overall people prefer to see
point of sale by the door as you go in or next to
similar products. Whereas my target market
prefer to see point of sales next to similar
products
On the next few slides is the data I collected from my
questionnaire and some analysis of it.
I will use the information above and on the next few slides
to determine what requirements I should use when
designing my point of sale display.
1. What attracts you to a point of sale? (please
tick up to three of the list below)
1. The Brand
2. Promotional Offers
3. Colours and Visual Effects

Product Assembly
Rug DoctorEnergiser IPAD
This point of sale display is a
temporary structure and will only be
used for a couple of weeks because:
• It is made of cardboard.
• It has a special offer printed on the top
which cannot be removed and
eventually the offer will end.
• This display will not require specialist
tools and skills to assemble so it will be
sent to a shop as a flat pack.
This point of sale display is a semi-
permanent structure and will only be
used for this product for a couple of
months to a year because:
• It is made of metal.
• Has interchangeable cardboard fixtures
on top.
• This doesn’t require specialist tools or
knowledge because it will arrive already
assembled but the cardboard
advertising will come flat packed.
This point of sale display is a
permanent structure and will be used
for a year or more because:
• It is made of wood and metal, it also has
a backlit display behind it.
• It has no special offers displayed, only a
little card next to the IPAD. The picture
on the backlit screen can be changed
• This display requires specialist tools and
knowledge and will be assembled by a
specialist, who delivers the display.
Customer Profiling
Below is a customer profile for the point of sale display that I am designing. This profile will help me develop my
ideas, designs and which method of advertising I will use to help me appeal more to my target market.
1. I think the type of person my typical customer would be is a sports enthusiast.
2. I think my age range of potential customers would be between 16 and 30 because current advertising is aimed at that age group.
3. I think my potential customers would be male because the advertising is aimed at men.
4. I don’t think my target market lives in a certain geographical area because it is not aimed at a specific class of people.
5. I don’t think my target market has a certain occupation because it is aimed at everyone.
6. I think my customer will generally be interested in sports because Old Spice have recently used an American football player to endorse their
products therefore associating the product with sport.
7. I think my typical customer will want to see a regular design . I know this is what my customer wants because I found in my questionnaire that no
one is attracted to an unusual shape/design.
8. The marketing that Old Spice use is clever and will make young men aspire to be like the people in the adverts and buy the products.
9. The factors that my potential customers are likely to consider are the aesthetic look of the product, the scent of the product and the display it is
in, as well as the branding and the colours used to attract attention. Also the other key factor, cost.
10. My potential customers will find out about my product through social media, TV and magazine adverts and seeing it in shops.
11. The cost of the product does influence the customer’s decision whether or not to buy the product. This is because it is one of the main factors.
12. Ways in which contact can be made with my potential customers:
1. Email
2. Social Media
3. Telephone
Mood Board
On this slide is a collection of images that I
feel represents the Old Spice brand. I will
use these images as inspiration when
designing my product. I have included
pictures of potential materials that I might
use e.g. acrylic, wood and cardboard. I
have also included pictures of exotic
landscapes and colours. I have also
included images related to social media
and recycling.

10 Minute Observation
• On Friday 28th September 2012 I performed two ten minute observations on two different point of sale displays in the Bromley
Shopping Centre. The two displays were: an IPhone 5 display in the Apple Store and Diesel aftershave lotion in Boots.
• The objective of the observations was to gain first hand knowledge of the three aspects of the point of sale that I used for my
questionnaire namely:
1. What features seem to attract people to a point of sale
2. How long did people tend to spend at the point of sale
3. How important was the location of the point of sale in the shop
• The results of the observations were as follows:
Apple IPhone 5
1. The shop was very popular because of the status of the Apple brand. The
display unit allowed people to touch and feel the product and this seemed an
effective way of attracting attention.
2. I did a tally chart based on the time intervals in my questionnaire and the one to
five minute time category was the most popular (65%).
3. The display was at the very front of the shop as customers walk in. This seemed
very effective because it appeared to attract potential customers into the shop to
have a look at the stand who would then spend further time in the shop with
other Apple products.
In conclusion, this observation shows that this point of sale display is very
effective in attracting attention through its interactivity. I will try to incorporate
some of these features in my design.
Diesel Only the Brave Aftershave
1. The shop was quite popular because it is a well known store and
the men's fragrance section was quite busy as well. The display
allowed people to touch and test the aftershave which is a very
effective way of attracting attention.
2. I did a tally chart based on the time intervals in my questionnaire
and the under a minute time category was the most popular (75%).
3. The display was at the very front of the shop as customers walk in.
This seemed very effective because it was the first thing customers
saw as they walked into the shop.
In conclusion, this observation shows that this point of sale display
is very effective in attracting attention and I will try and incorporate
some of these features in my design.
Interviews
• Whilst I conducted my questionnaire sample of 30 people, I also conducted short
interviews with people as they were completing the questionnaire.
• Key results from the interviews
– People between 16-30 seemed a lot more enthusiastic about features such as interactivity
and bright colours whereas the 30+ age group seemed to think the shape/ design of the
display was more important. I will try to include the features selected by the 16-30 category
because they are my target market.
– The branding of the item was an important feature for everyone that I interviewed. Because
of this I will make sure that the brand is displayed in a prominent and easily identified
position. For example, on top of the point of sale.
– The 16-30 age group seemed to prefer to see point of sale displays inside the shop
alongside similar products. Whereas the 30+ age group seemed to prefer to see a point of
sale display by the door as they walk into the shop.
– The above results aligned with the outputs from the questionnaire.
I think the most useful piece of
research was the questionnaire. I
think this because it allowed me to
find out what people find most
attractive and eye-catching in a
point of sale display.
I think the least useful piece of
research was the mood board
because it does not provide any
information or trends that the
target market have.
Research Summary
Research Method What did I find out What do I need to do next
Questionnaire I found out that people within my target
market prefer sounds, interactivity, are
wiling to spend between 1 and 5 minutes
interacting with the display and they prefer
to see the display next to similar products.
Use the requirements named to the left to
design my point of sale display.
Product Assembly I found out that temporary displays are
made of cardboard, whereas permanent
displays are made out of wood and metal.
I will use this information to decide what
type of display I will create.
Customer Profiling I found out that my target market will be
interested in sports and is between 16 and
30 and is male.
Design my product/ ideas around the
interests and lifestyle of my target market.
ACCESS FM of secondary products I found out that all the point of sales that I
analysed contained no sharp edges and
exposed wires. All the point of sale displays
were around 150cm tall, 50cm wide and
50cm deep.
I will incorporate these requirements into
my designs/ ideas because this seems to
be the norm in all point of sale displays.
Mood Board I collected a range of images that I will use
as inspiration for my designs/ ideas. I
collected images to do with the sea, exotic
landscapes, ships, social media and
recycling.
I will use these images to inspire me and to
help me create my designs/ ideas.
Market Research I found out some general information about
the six brands named.
I will use the information on Old Spice to
help me think of my designs/ ideas.
First Hand Existing Design Analysis I found out that the majority of the 15
images contained the same characteristics.
For example bright colours
Use this information to refine the
requirements I should use when designing
my point of sale display.
Brand Analysis I found out that Old Spice was founded in
1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz.
I will use this information I have found to
create my design
10 Minute Observation I found out that the main feature used to
attract attention is interactivity
I will use this information in the creation of
my design
Interviews I found out that my target market seemed to
be more enthusiastic about interactivity
whereas the people outside of my target
market were not.
I will use this information I have collected to
create my designs
Further Specification
Target Market: The target market of my product will be the customer of the brand Old Spice. I think this will be male people between the
age of 16 and 30. I know this because of my customer profiling and my questionnaire.
Functions: The point of sale display will be modern looking and be able to hold Old Spice products. The point of sale will be flat packed
and easy to assemble. I will do this because my design will not be a permanent structure and will not require a specialist to assemble it.
Materials: I will make my design easily recycling by using renewable materials such as cardboard. By doing this it makes my design easily
disposable.
Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I will make my point of sale big enough to hold at least 3 products. I will also make my design tall enough to
reach eye-level.
Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: I will use one off production because I will only be creating one.
Product Lifespan and Recycling: I think the lifespan of my point of sale will be a few months to a year. I think this because I will use
materials that are not used in permanent displays such as metal. Also I will make my design recyclable and easy to dispose of.
Aesthetic Appearance: I will include the colour of red in my design because this is the colour that is used in the Old Spice branding. I will
also use the Old Spice logo so that my target market have a clear idea of the brand.
Quality Control: I will carry out a quality control at every key stage in the manufacture of my point of sale display.
Cost: I will try to keep costs as low as possible in order to save money.
Time Scale and Planning: I will plan and manage my time productively and efficiently.
Health And Safety: I will make sure that there are no health hazards in my design. For example, sharp edges and loose wires. I will do
this to ensure the safety of my customer when interacting with my point of sale display.

Development 1 The arms
I noticed that the arms, which move in and out of the main body, could be a potential health
hazard. i.e. people could be hit by them as they move out. On this slide I will look at multiple
development aspects that will help me to improve my design.
Materials
At first I thought about using
wood or metal. But by using
these materials it could cause
a potential health hazard and
cause injury to passing
customers. I then considered
using nylon or another type of
cloth. By using these materials
it decreases the health risks
because they are softer
materials.
Components
To begin with, I was going to use
cogs and a motor to make the arms
move. I then changed it to using a fan
to blow air out of each side of the
main body and make the arms flap
about, in the same style of a wacky
wavy arm flailing tube man. By doing
this it will not cause major injury or
health and safety issues
Aesthetics
I was originally going to make
the arms dark brown to match
the face of Terry Crews (the
spokesman for Old Spice). But
I changed the material from
wood or metal to nylon for
safety reasons. I decided to
change the colour to red to
match the main body, which is
also the colour associated with
Old Spice.
Manufacture
I will manufacture this part of
my design by attaching a two
foot long nylon tube to a fan. I
will create two of these, one for
each arm.
Construction
I will construct this part of my
design by attaching the fans to
either side of the main body
with the nylon tube facing
outwards. When a customer
activates the point of sale
display, the fans turn on and
the nylon tubes start flailing
about.
Development 1 Frame for the Main Body
I noticed that the frame of the main body, which is the main structure/ support for the point of sale
can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple
development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Materials
At first I thought about
using wood because it is
strong, durable and
easily cut and shaped.
Through my
development I have
changed this material to
metal because it is
stronger, lighter and
more durable. By doing
this it will make the
overall weight of the
point of sale lighter.
Components
Now that I have changed
the material from wood
to metal. I will have to
use a MIG welding tool
to weld the pieces of
metal together.
Manufacture
Originally I was going to
use nails to attach the
wooden frame together.
But now I have changed
the material to metal, I
will weld the pieces of
metal together instead.
By doing this it will
make the frame stronger
because the welded
joints would be stronger
than nails.
Construction
I will construct this part
of my design by welding
multiple pieces of metal
together to create the
shape of a cylinder. On
one side it will have a
cut out section where
the products will be
placed. There are also
two holes on opposite
sides towards the top of
the point of sale. These
holes will be for the
arms to move in and out.
Development 1 Storage space in main body
I noticed that the storage space inside the main body, which is where all the products will be
placed in the point of sale display, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this
slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Materials
At first I thought about
using plastic because it
comes in a wide range
of colours and finishes.
But now I am going to
change this material to
cardboard because it is
easily shaped and cut.
Cardboard would be
easier to use because I
will be able to bend it
into a circle, which is the
shape of my design.
Aesthetics
Originally, I thought about
painting the inside of the
compartment red, to match the
rest of the display and the
colour of the Old Spice brand.
But now I have decided that I
will use the colour black
because it will make the red
bottles of Old Spice stand out.
By doing this, it will make them
stand out more against a black
background.
Manufacture
Originally I was going to
cut the cardboard out
with a scalpel but I have
decided to laser cut it
instead. By doing this it
will provide a higher
level of accuracy and
precision. Also it will
take less time to cut.
Construction
I will construct this piece of my
design by cutting a box made
out of cardboard using a
scalpel and inserting it into my
design.
Development 1 The frame of top of the display
I noticed that the frame of the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its
design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my
design.
Materials
Originally, I thought about
using wood because it is
strong, durable and easily cut
and shaped. Through my
development I have changed
this material to metal because
it is stronger, lighter and more
durable. By doing this it will
make the point of sale more
hard wearing.
Manufacture
Originally I was going to use a
dowel joint to attach the pieces
of wood together but because I
have changed the material for
this part of my design to metal,
I will now weld the pieces of
metal together. By doing this it
will create a much stronger
joint.
Construction
I will construct this part of my
design by welding multiple
pieces of metal together to
create the shape of a dome. A
smaller circle will be welded to
the inside of the base of the
dome, which will be attached to
the metal dome using metal
rods. This part is where the
head for the man popping out
of my design will attach to the
dome.
Development 1
Materials
At first I thought about using
cardboard because it is cheap,
easy to cut and lightweight. But
now I have decided to change
this to plastic because I will be
able to vacuum form it. By
doing this it will make it easier
to shape.
Manufacture
Originally, I was going to use a
scalpel to cut it out of
cardboard but now I have
changed the material to plastic,
I will use the vacuum former to
create this part of my design.
Construction
I will construct this part of my
design, I will make an MDF
mould of the dome and vacuum
form it then attach it to the
metal frame and then to the
main body.
The top of the display
I noticed that the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this
slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Usability
This part of my design will
move upwards when a sensor
is triggered by the customer. A
motor will turn a gear system
which will push this part of my
design upwards revealing the
head of Terry Crews
AESTHETICS: I will make my design for my point of sale with
bright colours to make it eye-catching. I need to make my
display bright to attract the attention of potential customers but
not too bright that it puts them off.
COST: I will aim to make my point of sale as cheap as possible
to keep costs to a minimum. I will use as few materials as
possible to reduce waste products and make my display more
environmentally friendly.
CUSTOMER: I think my target market is young, aged 16-30 and
male. Potential customers could be female because they are
buying the product as a gift.
ENVIRONMENT: I think my point of sale display will be in a
supermarket next to similar products in the corresponding
department.
SIZE: The size will need to be big enough to hold a at least 3
products by Old Spice to be able to promote their latest
products and I would like to keep it to a minimalist look.
SAFETY: No sharp edges, no loose wires, water-proof, energy
efficient.
FUNCTION: My point of sale display must be able to hold and
display Old Spice products and promote their brand. I will make
my display interactive to hold my customer’s attention longer.
MATERIALS: I will make use of materials that are
environmentally friendly, easily recyclable and make it
sustainable. Potential materials that I make use of are:
cardboard, plastic, wood, metal.
AESTHETICS: I have met this requirement because I have made
the colour the same as the Old Spice brand. By doing this it will
allow my customers to identify the brand of the point of sale by
the colour.
COST: I have not met this requirement yet.
CUSTOMER: I have met this requirement because I have
created a design that will hopefully appeal to my target market.
But I still think I can adapt this design to make it appeal more to
my target market.
ENVIRONMENT: I think I have met this requirement because my
point of sale display will be situated near similar next to similar
displays.
SIZE: I think I have met this requirement because I have made
my design large enough to hold multiple products. But I still
feel that my design can be developed further
SAFETY: I have met this requirement but I think I can still
develop this idea more to make it safer for customers
FUNCTION: I have met this requirement because my design can
hold and display multiple products but I think I can still develop
this idea more.
MATERIALS: I think I have met this requirement because I
intend to use some recyclable materials but I still feel I can
make my design more environmentally friendly through
development.

Analysis
Development 2 Frame for the Main Body
I noticed that the frame of the main body, which is the main structure/ support for the point of sale,
can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple
development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Materials
I am now going to
change the material
from metal to wood. I am
going to do this because
it will be easier to cut
and join. Also it is
cheaper than using
metal, this is key
because it is one of the
requirements of my
specification.
Manufacture
I am now going to
change my joining
method back to using
nails and dowel joints. I
have decided to do this
because welding is a
difficult method to use.
Also there is the cost
aspect of it. I have
chosen nails because it
is an easier joining
method
Components
I am going to use a
hammer and nails to join
this part of my design
together. I am going to
use these because I
have changed the
material from metal to
wood , which means I
am unable to weld wood
together therefore I will
use nails instead
Construction
I am going to construct
this part of my design by
nailing together pieces
of wood with a hammer
and nails. I will also use
dowel joints to make the
joints stronger and more
durable.
Development 2
I noticed that the storage space inside the main body, which is where all the products will be
placed within the point of sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide
I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Materials
I am going to use acrylic
instead of cardboard
because it is stronger
and more durable. Also
it is easier to cut and
shape. I changed this
because this part of my
design will come into
contact with liquids (i.e.
the Old Spice products.)
which means it could
get wet and cardboard
isn’t waterproof whereas
acrylic is.
Manufacture
I am going to vacuum
form this part of my
design because it will be
quicker and more
efficient. Also the part
would be quite strong
because only one piece
of acrylic will be used.
Storage space in main body
Components
I will use a vacuum
former to create this part
of my design. Because I
have changed the
material to acrylic, I
have changed the
creation method to this
because it will be
stronger due to the fact
that it is only one piece
of acrylic.
Construction
I will construct this part
of my design by creating
an MDF mould in the
shape of a rectangle. I
will then place the
mould into the vacuum
former and vacuum form
the acrylic into the
shape of the mould.
Once the acrylic has
cooled down I will cut
away any excess using a
gerbil cutter. Finally I
will insert the piece of
acrylic into my design
Aesthetics
I have chosen to make
this piece of my design
out of black acrylic
because it will make the
Old Spice products
stand out more. This is
because the Old Spice
brand uses the
predominant colour of
red in all their products.
Therefore it will make
the products stand out
more because it is red
on a black background.
Development 2
I noticed that the frame of the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its
design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my
design.
The frame of the top of the display
Materials
I have decided to
change the material of
this part to wood instead
of metal because it will
be easier to cut and join.
Also it will be cheaper
than welding pieces of
metal together
Components
I will use dowel joints
and super glue to attach
the pieces of wood
together. I will also use a
drill to drill the holes for
the dowels to go into
and also a scroll saw to
cut the wood out. I am
doing this because a
dowel joint is stronger
than using nails.
Construction
I will construct this part
of my design by drilling
holes in the end of each
piece of wood. I will then
insert some super glue
into the hole and then
insert dowels into it.
Next I will cover the end
of the piece of wood
with super glue. I will
also insert more
superglue into the other
hole the dowel is going
into. Finally join the two
pieces of wood together.
Development 2
I noticed that the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this
slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
The top of the display
Usability
When the user presses a
button, it will release the top of
the display revealing Terry
Crews head. The top will be
pushed upwards by struts,
commonly found in car boots.
Components
I will use a dome blowing unit
to create this part of my
design. I will do this because I
will be able to create a perfect
dome which will sit on top of
the frame.
Manufacture
I will place a piece of red HIP
into the dome blowing unit and
secure it down with the clamps.
Once the dome has formed to
the size I want, I will remove it
and attach it to the frame,
which will then be attached to
the main body.
Materials
I will use HIP to create this part
of my design because it is
easily cut, shaped and light-
weight. Also it can be vacuum
formed which will be how I am
going to create this part.
Development 2
I noticed that the main body can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I
will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
The main body
Construction
I am going to change the
method of attaching the
HIP outer shell together.
Originally I was going to
use Tensol cement but
now I am going to use a
pop rivet to attach the
sheet together. I am
going to use this
method because it is a
cleaner finish and is a
more sustainable
permanent joint.
Materials
I was originally going to
use red acrylic but I am
now going to use red
HIP (high impact
polystyrene) because it
is lighter, stronger and
easier to bend/ shape.
Also it is cheaper than
acrylic.
Components
For this part of my
design I will use a drill to
firstly drill the holes
where I am going to
attach the HIP together. I
am also going to use a
pop rivet gun to attach
the HIP sheet together. I
am going to use a pop
rivet because it is a neat
and tidy method of
joining things together
and is also quick and
easy to do.
Usability
The user will walk up to
the display. There will be
a button at the top of
the main body. It will be
just above the storage
space. This is the button
that will trigger the top
of the display to pop up.
The button will be black
so it will stand out on
the red HIP main body.
AESTHETICS: I have further developed this aspect of my design
and I have made my design more aesthetically pleasing for the
customer. I have done this by making all the design red to
match the Old Spice branding. I have also made the inside of
the storage space black to make the Old Spice products stand
out more.
COST: I still haven’t met this requirement yet because I do not
have a complete understanding of the prices of the materials I
need for my design.
CUSTOMER: I have further met this requirement because I have
designed a display that will hopefully appeal to the target
market of Old Spice. I have designed a display which the target
market of Old Spice will be easily recognise.
ENVIRONMENT: I think I have met this requirement because my
point of sale display will be situated near similar next to similar
displays.
SIZE: I think I understand that I will need to make my design big
enough that it will stand out from other point of sales and hold
multiple Old Spice products.
SAFETY: I think I have met this requirement because I will not
have any sharp edges or other safety issues.
FUNCTION: I have met this requirement because the main
function of my design was to hold multiple Old Spice products.
Also I have designed it to attract attention to the point of sale.
MATERIALS: I think I have met this requirement because I have
changed the material of the frame for my design from metal to
wood. I have done this because it is easier to join and recycle.
CUSTOMER: I think my target market is young, aged 16-30 and

supermarket next to similar products in the corresponding
department.
SIZE: The size will need to be big enough to hold a at least 3
products by Old Spice to be able to promote their latest

Specification Analysis
Specification Check 2
Development 3 The arms
I noticed that the arms, which move in and out of the main body, could be a potential health
hazard. i.e. people could be hit by them as they move out. On this slide I will look at multiple
development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Usability
This part of my design
will flap around when air
is pumped through them
from a fan concealed
inside the display. When
a button is pushed the
fans will activate
causing the nylon arm to
flap around in a similar
fashion to a wacky wavy
arm flailing tube man.
By doing this it will
hopefully attract
customers attention and
also add a bit of humour
to the display.
Construction
I will have to drill
multiple holes into the
back of the main body.
This is for ventilation,
i.e. for the fans to draw
air from. The holes will
allow air to flow into the
display and then back
out via the arms/ fans. I
have to insert a method
of ventilation to allow
the fans to operate
properly. I will make the
holes big enough so that
a sufficient amount of air
can be drawn in and out
at the same time and
also be discreet so it
does not spoil the
aesthetic look of the
display.
Materials
I am changing the
material from nylon to
foam. I am doing this
because I am not going
to use a fan anymore. I
have changed the
material because I have
had difficulty getting the
nylon arms to inflate
fully. I made this
decision when I tested if
a hairdryer had the
capability to inflate the
arms fully. As shown in
the picture below.
Manufacture
I am changing the way in
which the arms will
move. Instead of using a
fan to make the arms
wave about, I am going
to use two pieces of
foam attached to a cam.
I am doing this because
I have noticed that I will
need a very powerful fan
in order for it all to work.
The cam will be powered
by a motor, which is
also powering the head.
I will attach a piece of
string to the foam and
the cam. When the cam
turns the string will
make the foam arm
move up and down.
Development 3 Frame for the Main Body
I noticed that the frame of the main body, which is the main structure/ support for the point of
sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple
development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Manufacture
I am going to change the
joining method to only
using a dowel joint
instead of using nails. I
have decided to do this
because a dowel joint is
a stronger joining
method than using nails.
There is also the safety
aspect to it as well. i.e.
after the point of sale
has been used and has
to be disposed of, nails
will cause splinters
when frame is broken
down. However, a dowel
joint wouldn’t.
Components
I will use dowels to join
the wooden frame
together. I will do this by
drilling holes in the end
of each part of the
frame. Then I will insert
a dowel into one end of
the piece of wood using
a hammer. Finally I will
place the other piece of
wood, which is being
joined to the first piece,
onto the other end of the
dowel. I will repeat this
method for all joints in
the wooden frame. I am
doing this because a
dowel joint is a stronger
and safer joining
method instead of nails.
Construction
I will place a wooden
cylinder in the base of
the display. I am going
to do this because I
want to add more
stability to the display.
By adding weight to the
base it will hopefully
make the display less
likely to fall over if
someone bumps into it. I
have done this to make
my point of sale display
safer and more stable.
Development 3 Storage space in main body
I noticed that the storage space inside the main body, which is where all the products will be
placed in the point of sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I
will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Materials
I am changing the
material that I am going
to use for this part of my
design from acrylic to
HIP. I am going to do
this because I am unable
to vacuum form acrylic
because I do not have
the equipment to do so.
Also by using HIP
instead of acrylic it will
reduce the weight of the
point of sale because it
is a lighter material.
Development 3 The top of the display
I noticed that the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this
slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design.
Manufacture
I have changed this part
of my design to use a
cam to push the top of
the display upwards. I
have changed this part
from using car boot
struts. This is because it
allows the design to
open and close by itself
whereas the struts only
open by themselves not
close.
Construction
I will construct the cam
part of my design by
creating an egg shaped
wheel with a piston on
top and motor attached
to the side. I am using a
motor to power the cam.
When the cam is turned,
the piston will be
pushed up. The piston is
attached to the top of
my design which will be
pushed upwards
Components
Now that I have changed
my design from using
struts to a cam and a
motor, I will use a laser
cutter to cut out the
wooden cam. I am going
to use a laser cutter
because it is more
accurate than cutting it
out by hand.

Development Model
This slide shows the model I made of the CAM/
mechanism that will go inside of the main body of the
point of sale display. The picture on the left shows the
model front on, the one in the bottom left corner shows
it in side view. Finally the one directly below is a video of
the model in action. As you can see as the rod (wooden
skewer) turns, the egg shaped cams (cardboard disks
inside the model) rotate. As they rotate they will push
another rod (piston) up and down. This is how the arms
and head will move.
AESTHETICS: I have met this requirement because I have
made the colour the display red and white to match the
branding of Old Spice. I also have used the colour black in the
storage area to make the red Old Spice bottles stand out more.
COST: I have met this requirement because I have used
materials that will hopefully keep costs to a minimum
CUSTOMER: I have met this requirement because I think I
have designed a point of sale display that will hopefully appeal
to my target market. I have designed a fun and interactive
point of sale that will hopefully attract the attention of my
target market.
ENVIRONMENT: I think I have met this requirement because
my point of sale display will be situated near similar next to
similar displays.
SIZE: I think I have met this requirement because I have
designed my point of sale display to be big enough to attract
attention of my target market. Also I will make it big enough to
fit all the components of the design inside.
SAFETY: I have met this requirement because I have made my
design more stable and safer for the potential customers to
interact with.
FUNCTION: I have met this requirement because my point of
sale is designed to attract attention of my target market and
this is what it is meant to do.
MATERIALS: I think I have met this requirement because I
have used materials that are easily recyclable and
environmentally friendly. I have also used lightweight and
cheap materials.

Evaluation
Evaluation from Client
Target Market: I think the design looks interesting and is in keeping with the
branding of Old Spice
Functions: I think it does what it is meant to do, namely, attract attention
Materials: I think more environmentally friendly materials could have been used
Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I think when the design is built at full size, it will be
even more interactive with people because it is a similar size to the user.
Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: I think this display would be difficult to
mass produce unless the design is altered slightly due to the complexity of the
design.
Product Lifespan and Recycling: I think the lifespan will be the same length as
the advertising campaign which can vary from a few months to years
Aesthetic Appearance: It looks very interesting because it has bright colours
which makes the design eye-catching. The colours I have used match the
colours of the Old Spice brand.
Quality Control: It appears from inspection of the end product that quality has
been maintained throughout the project
Time Scale and Planning: The end product was delivered on time as was
requested and this means that effective planning has taken place
Health And Safety: I couldn’t see any stand out health and safety hazards
associated with the product which appears to be safe to be placed in a public
environment.
Evaluation from User
Target Market: I think the design is very interesting and unique from other
companies. I feel I would be more likely to buy a product because it has an
imaginative design idea with eye-catching colours which match the branding.
Functions: This display serves its purpose of attracting the attention of potential
customers because of its unusual design, movable parts and interactivity.
Materials: I think the materials used could be improved to be more
environmentally friendly as outlined in the specification, for example using
cardboard instead of acrylic.
Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I think when the display is at full size, interactivity
will be better because the display is a similar size to the user.
Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: The design looks to be made of good
quality.
Product Lifespan and Recycling: I think the lifespan of this display would not
be very long because advertising campaigns and promotions change frequently.
Aesthetic Appearance: Looks good, nice and bright appearance, eye-catching.
Quality Control: I think the quality is good. There are no major defects and the
design meets the required specification and the product is fully functional
Health And Safety: On close inspection, I could not see any health and safety
hazards with the product.
Evaluation
My Evaluation
Target Market: I believe I have designed a point of sale display for Old Spice aimed at males aged between 16-30. I think I have done this because I
have made my design interactive, so hopefully my potential customers will be intrigued and want to interact with the display. I also used bright colours. I
did this because I learnt from my research that these two factors (interactivity and bright colours) were some of the highest ranked ways of attracting the
attention of my target market
Functions: I believe I have designed a point of sale display for Old Spice that will appeal to my target market because of its functionality. I think this
because from my research I found out that my target market prefers a point of sale display that is interactive. I have changed the style of my display from
being a flat-packed design to a pre-built ready to use design. I have done this because it will allow quality and consistency to be maintained across all
displays made.
Materials: To build my point of sale display for Old Spice, I have used acrylic to build my prototype. I intend to use more sustainable and easily
recyclable materials when my design is scaled up to its full size. I used acrylic because an acrylic tube was available to use at the time.
Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I believe I have designed a point of sale that is large enough to hold multiple Old Spice products. I think this because my
prototype that has been scaled down is able to hold a single Old Spice product. So when my display is at full size it will be able to hold multiple products.
Also the full size design will be more interactive with the customers because it is a similar size to them (approx. 4ft)
Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: My design is ideal for one off production. It is has too many individual parts to be mass produced in its current
format. However with a few alterations to certain parts of my design, this will allow my design to be mass produced e.g. injection moulding the top of the
display instead of using a dome blower.
Product Lifespan and Recycling: Although for my prototype I used acrylic to make my design, when it is produced commercially at full size I will use
materials that are easier to dispose/ recycle (e.g. cardboard). I will do this because it will make my design more sustainable and environmentally friendly.
Aesthetic Appearance: I used the colour red as the primary colour for my design. I did this because it is the same colour as the Old Spice brand. I also
used white for the Old Spice name and logo because this is also the colour of the Old Spice branding
Quality Control: I carried out multiple quality control checks throughout the manufacture of my point of sale display prototype. For example I made sure
that the dome was large enough to fit the main body. Also, I made sure there were no air bubbles in the vinyl logo. Another quality control was that I
made sure that the arms were the correct size and width and were the same size. I did these multiple checks to ensure high quality was maintained
throughout the manufacture of my design
Time Scale and Planning: Generally I managed my time well throughout my project but there were some points during the process that could have
been managed a bit better. This is because I came across a complication which required me to adapt/ change my design to overcome it. e.g. the size of
the storage space.
Health and Safety: During the design and manufacture of my point of sale prototype, I made sure that there were no health and safety implications. I did
this by checking for sharp edges or major defect that could cause damage to users. For example I changed the original arms I designed form moving up
and down to static because I was worried the up and down movement may cause injury to users.
Evaluation
Moral, Social, Cultural and Environmental
Moral: Although my point of sale display is to promote Old Spice products as a fashionable item that my
target market will want, people might buy this for the sake of buying (rather than really needing it). This
wastes resources and has a negative effect on the environment
Social: For the parts of my design, I plan to use machines and robotics to produce them. I decided to do this
because the output accuracy and consistency is higher. Also it is cheaper because robots don’t need wages.
A social implication is caused by this. This is because, the introduction of machines and robotics into the
workforce would cause a mass job losses. Although every company wants to cut costs as much as possible
but there is a social extent you could go to.
Environmental: When my point of sale display reaches the end of its product life, the next issue to overcome
is disposal of it. In my prototype I have predominately uses acrylic. Most plastics are not bio-degradable
(breaks down naturally), they can be recycled and re-used. Although, I intend to use more environmentally
friendly materials such as cardboard for the real point of sale. I have still taken into consideration the
environmental impacts that surround plastics.
Cultural: During the process of deciding what stores and in which countries I will use to display my point of
sale. During this time, I have to take into consideration the cultural impacts of my point of sale. For example,
the base colour for the Old Spice brand (red) has different meanings in different countries. I.E. in China red
symbolises good fortune, whereas in South Africa red is the colour of mourning. This shows that something
as basic as colour could influence the buying habits of potential customers.
Modifications for Mass Market Production
This page highlights the modifications required before my product can be mass produced
The vinyl Old Spice Name and Logo Sticker
I would not change the manufacturing process itself but the amount produced per cut.
I would do this because it will reduce the amount of waste materials and time taken to cut them out. This can be
done by tessellating the design so that multiple stickers are produced per sheet of vinyl compared to one per
sheet (which is what I did for my prototype)
The top/lid of the display
I would change the method used to create this part of my design from using a vacuum former to using an
injection moulder.
I would use this method because a larger quantity can be produced over a period of time compared to vacuum
forming it.
The mechanics inside the main body
I would adapt the design to make it easier to manufacture and assemble. The components could be broken
down into sections. Parts could be tessellated on one sheet of material.
By doing this it would save waste material and will reduce overall cost of production and would make the design
more environmentally friendly.
The foam head
I would change the way in which I produced the foam head part of my design by tessellating the design on one
piece of foam. By doing this it would save money time and material.
Development Evaluation
I had to adapt the storage compartment by extending the space outside of the main tube. I had to do this
because the mechanics inside the design were larger than anticipated
I removed the concept of the arms from my design. I did this for health and safety reasons because I was
worried it would cause injury to someone. Also, the arm would not stick fully to the main body
I moved the vinyl sticker of the Old Spice name and logo from the top of the display (the dome part). I did this
because there was more space on the main body above the storage space. This enabled the text size to be
increased to make it easier to read.
I had to adapt the manufacture of the dome part from using a dome blowing unit to using a vacuum former. I did
this because the dome blower couldn't produce a big enough dome to match the height and diameter of the
main body.
I changed the material of the arms from foam to aluminium rods. I did this because the foam arms didn't look
very aesthetically pleasing whereas the aluminium arms did.
I changed the mechanics from being powered by a motor to be hand powered. I did this because it was not
feasible to fit it into the main body of the design along with all the other mechanics and components.

Development Evaluation
Testing
Test 1
I tested the mechanics
inside of the main body
to make sure they were
fully functional. During
the test the piston kept
getting stuck in the
wheel. This was because
it was catching the
frame. I resolved this by
adjusting the frame and
it runs smoothly now.
The video below shows
the mechanics being
tested.
Test 2
I then attached the
handle through the back
of the design to the
mechanics . As shown
in the video below the
test went smoothly and
there were no
complications.
Test 3
I then attached the head
and dome to the
mechanics inside the
main body. I conducted
a test to make sure that
everything worked
properly. The video
shows the test.

  • 2. Design Brief • I am going to design and make a point of sale display unit that will make my chosen brand, Old Spice, promote their products. Statistics show that more people are likely to buy a product if it has an attractive display. • The device will be a temporary fixture so that it can be moved around, easy to set up and control and also cheap to make. It must be powered by mains voltage and in this way it will be completely safe to be left on for a long time. Design Situation • Research has shown that many people buy products through impulse and they are attracted to the product because of the eye-catching product display unit • I have done some research on my chosen brand, Old Spice, and I have noticed that they do not have any point of sale displays in shops. Old Spice have very strong T.V advertising campaigns. Old Spice have limited their target market because they only advertise their brand through T.V ads and social media. I aim to try to incorporate these advertising methods within a point of sale display unit.
  • 3. INITIAL SPECIFICATION AESTHETICS: I will make my design my point of sale with bright colours and eye-catching features. I need to make my display bright to attract attention of potential customers but not too bright that it puts them off. COST: I will aim to make my point of sale as cheap as possible to keep costs to a minimum. I will use as little materials as possible to reduce waste products and make my display more environmentally friendly. CUSTOMER: I think my target market is young, aged 16-30 and male. But potential customers could be female because they could be buying the product as a gift. ENVIRONMENT: I think my point of sale display will be in a supermarket next to similar products in the corresponding department. SIZE: My display unit will need to be big enough to hold at least three Old Spice products to be able to promote their latest products and I would like to keep it to a minimalist look. SAFETY: No sharp edges, no loose wires, water- proof, energy efficient FUNCTION: My point of sale display must be able to hold and display Old Spice products and promote their brand. I will make my display interactive to hold my customer’s attention longer for longer. MATERIALS: I will use materials that are environmentally friendly, easily recyclable and make it sustainable. Potential materials that I may use are: cardboard, plastic, wood and metal. SAFETY CUSTOMER AESTHETICS COST Task Analysis MATERIALS FUNCTION SIZE I will try to keep costs to a minimum and only use the least amount of materials as possible. By doing this, I will decrease waste materials and make my design more environmentally friendly I will not leave exposed or trailing wires and have no sharp edges. By doing this I will increase the safety of potential customers. By having no wires exposed no one can be electrocuted or injured because of sharp edges. My point of sale display must be able to hold and display Old Spice products and promote their brand. I cannot decide whether or not to power my display via batteries or mains power. If I was to use mains I would have a constant supply of power but you are limited to where you can place the display. If I was to use batteries to power my display I have more ability to move it around but the batteries would have to be replaced regularly. I will make my display interactive to hold my customer’s attention longer Potential materials that I may use in my design are: wood, metal, acrylic, al uminium, carbon fibre and cardboard. I am considering these materials because they are hard-wearing and sustainable I think my customer would be male but could be female buying a gift for a male person. I think my customer will be between the age of 16-30 I will make my display eye-catching and bright but not include too much visual noise. By doing this my customer will not be put off because the colour scheme is too bright I will make my point of sale display at least 50cm wide, 50 cm deep and 150cm high. I will do this because this tends to be the norm with all point of sale displays

The first Old Spice product was intended for females, introduced in 1937. Old Spice for men followed in 1938. I think the target market of this company is teenagers and young men because it is a low end and cheap product. Fish started in 1987. In 2002, Fish launched their range of products for Boots stores. I think the target market for this brand is teenagers and men. I think this is a trendy brand because it is sold in fashionable locations. Fish Lynx is also known as axe and was introduced by the company, Unilever in 1983. The target market for this brand is young males because the adverts show a young man being swamped by women and all young men want to be like that. Lynx use a range of advertising techniques such as TV adverts to attract attention to their products LYNX Hackett was founded in 1979 and is a high end brand and its target market is middle-aged businessmen who wear suits to work. I think this is a high end product because it is sold in Harrods and other expensive stores in London Hackett Mr Natty products are made in England. I think the target market for this brand is older men because it is an old fashioned product and is mainly about moustache products. Mr Natty L'Oreal was founded in 1909 and use a range of advertising techniques such as TV ads and posters which attract customers to buy their products. I think the target market for this brand is a middle class older man because it mostly sells skin care products. L'Oreal Men Expert

  • 20. Questionnaire Opposite are three questions that will help me determine what features to include in my point of sale display, together with how long people will be prepared to spend at the point of sale and the position they would like to see it in the shop. From this questionnaire I have learnt that people in different age groups prefer different things: • I have learnt from my questionnaire that overall people prefer presentations, colours and visual effects. However, my target market, 16-30 year olds, prefer sounds and interactivity. • I have learnt that overall people only interact for around a minute. My target market often tends to spend 1-5 minutes interacting with the display • I have learnt that overall people prefer to see point of sale by the door as you go in or next to similar products. Whereas my target market prefer to see point of sales next to similar products On the next few slides is the data I collected from my questionnaire and some analysis of it. I will use the information above and on the next few slides to determine what requirements I should use when designing my point of sale display. 1. What attracts you to a point of sale? (please tick up to three of the list below) 1. The Brand 2. Promotional Offers 3. Colours and Visual Effects 4. Free Hand-outs 5. Interactivity e.g. Buttons to press 6. Sounds 7. When we look at the 16-30 age group, which is my target market for the Old Spice product, it shows that they prefer sounds and interactivity. Both these options were selected by 11 out of 20 people, or 55%. The next preference down was colour and visual effects, which was selected by 9 out of 20 people, or 45%.

  • 24. Product Assembly Rug DoctorEnergiser IPAD This point of sale display is a temporary structure and will only be used for a couple of weeks because: • It is made of cardboard. • It has a special offer printed on the top which cannot be removed and eventually the offer will end. • This display will not require specialist tools and skills to assemble so it will be sent to a shop as a flat pack. This point of sale display is a semi- permanent structure and will only be used for this product for a couple of months to a year because: • It is made of metal. • Has interchangeable cardboard fixtures on top. • This doesn’t require specialist tools or knowledge because it will arrive already assembled but the cardboard advertising will come flat packed. This point of sale display is a permanent structure and will be used for a year or more because: • It is made of wood and metal, it also has a backlit display behind it. • It has no special offers displayed, only a little card next to the IPAD. The picture on the backlit screen can be changed • This display requires specialist tools and knowledge and will be assembled by a specialist, who delivers the display.
  • 25. Customer Profiling Below is a customer profile for the point of sale display that I am designing. This profile will help me develop my ideas, designs and which method of advertising I will use to help me appeal more to my target market. 6. I think my customer will generally be interested in sports because Old Spice have recently used an American football player to endorse their products therefore associating the product with sport. 7. I think my typical customer will want to see a regular design . I know this is what my customer wants because I found in my questionnaire that no one is attracted to an unusual shape/design. 8. The marketing that Old Spice use is clever and will make young men aspire to be like the people in the adverts and buy the products. 9. The factors that my potential customers are likely to consider are the aesthetic look of the product, the scent of the product and the display it is in, as well as the branding and the colours used to attract attention. Also the other key factor, cost. 10. My potential customers will find out about my product through social media, TV and magazine adverts and seeing it in shops. 11. The cost of the product does influence the customer’s decision whether or not to buy the product. This is because it is one of the main factors. 12. Ways in which contact can be made with my potential customers: 1. Email 2. Social Media 3. Telephone
  • 26. Mood Board On this slide is a collection of images that I feel represents the Old Spice brand. I will use these images as inspiration when designing my product. I have included pictures of potential materials that I might use e.g. acrylic, wood and cardboard. I have also included pictures of exotic landscapes and colours. I have also included images related to social media and recycling.

  • 30. 10 Minute Observation • On Friday 28th September 2012 I performed two ten minute observations on two different point of sale displays in the Bromley Shopping Centre. The two displays were: an IPhone 5 display in the Apple Store and Diesel aftershave lotion in Boots. • The objective of the observations was to gain first hand knowledge of the three aspects of the point of sale that I used for my questionnaire namely: 1. What features seem to attract people to a point of sale 2. How long did people tend to spend at the point of sale 3. How important was the location of the point of sale in the shop • The results of the observations were as follows: Apple IPhone 5 1. The shop was very popular because of the status of the Apple brand. The display unit allowed people to touch and feel the product and this seemed an effective way of attracting attention. 2. I did a tally chart based on the time intervals in my questionnaire and the one to five minute time category was the most popular (65%). 3. The display was at the very front of the shop as customers walk in. This seemed very effective because it appeared to attract potential customers into the shop to have a look at the stand who would then spend further time in the shop with other Apple products. In conclusion, this observation shows that this point of sale display is very effective in attracting attention through its interactivity. I will try to incorporate some of these features in my design. Diesel Only the Brave Aftershave 1. The shop was quite popular because it is a well known store and the men's fragrance section was quite busy as well. The display allowed people to touch and test the aftershave which is a very effective way of attracting attention. 2. I did a tally chart based on the time intervals in my questionnaire and the under a minute time category was the most popular (75%). 3. The display was at the very front of the shop as customers walk in. This seemed very effective because it was the first thing customers saw as they walked into the shop. In conclusion, this observation shows that this point of sale display is very effective in attracting attention and I will try and incorporate some of these features in my design.
  • 31. Interviews • Whilst I conducted my questionnaire sample of 30 people, I also conducted short interviews with people as they were completing the questionnaire. • Key results from the interviews – People between 16-30 seemed a lot more enthusiastic about features such as interactivity and bright colours whereas the 30+ age group seemed to think the shape/ design of the display was more important. I will try to include the features selected by the 16-30 category because they are my target market. – The branding of the item was an important feature for everyone that I interviewed. Because of this I will make sure that the brand is displayed in a prominent and easily identified position. For example, on top of the point of sale. – The 16-30 age group seemed to prefer to see point of sale displays inside the shop alongside similar products. Whereas the 30+ age group seemed to prefer to see a point of sale display by the door as they walk into the shop. – The above results aligned with the outputs from the questionnaire.
  • 32. I think the most useful piece of research was the questionnaire. I think this because it allowed me to find out what people find most attractive and eye-catching in a point of sale display. I think the least useful piece of research was the mood board because it does not provide any information or trends that the target market have. Research Summary Research Method What did I find out What do I need to do next Questionnaire I found out that people within my target market prefer sounds, interactivity, are wiling to spend between 1 and 5 minutes interacting with the display and they prefer to see the display next to similar products. Use the requirements named to the left to design my point of sale display. Product Assembly I found out that temporary displays are made of cardboard, whereas permanent displays are made out of wood and metal. I will use this information to decide what type of display I will create. Customer Profiling I found out that my target market will be interested in sports and is between 16 and 30 and is male. Design my product/ ideas around the interests and lifestyle of my target market. ACCESS FM of secondary products I found out that all the point of sales that I analysed contained no sharp edges and exposed wires. All the point of sale displays were around 150cm tall, 50cm wide and 50cm deep. I will incorporate these requirements into my designs/ ideas because this seems to be the norm in all point of sale displays. Mood Board I collected a range of images that I will use as inspiration for my designs/ ideas. I collected images to do with the sea, exotic landscapes, ships, social media and recycling. I will use these images to inspire me and to help me create my designs/ ideas. Market Research I found out some general information about the six brands named. I will use the information on Old Spice to help me think of my designs/ ideas. First Hand Existing Design Analysis I found out that the majority of the 15 images contained the same characteristics. For example bright colours Use this information to refine the requirements I should use when designing my point of sale display. Brand Analysis I found out that Old Spice was founded in 1934 by William Lightfoot Schultz. I will use this information I have found to create my design 10 Minute Observation I found out that the main feature used to attract attention is interactivity I will use this information in the creation of my design Interviews I found out that my target market seemed to be more enthusiastic about interactivity whereas the people outside of my target market were not. I will use this information I have collected to create my designs
  • 33. Further Specification Target Market: The target market of my product will be the customer of the brand Old Spice. I think this will be male people between the age of 16 and 30. I know this because of my customer profiling and my questionnaire. Functions: The point of sale display will be modern looking and be able to hold Old Spice products. The point of sale will be flat packed and easy to assemble. I will do this because my design will not be a permanent structure and will not require a specialist to assemble it. Materials: I will make my design easily recycling by using renewable materials such as cardboard. By doing this it makes my design easily disposable. Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I will make my point of sale big enough to hold at least 3 products. I will also make my design tall enough to reach eye-level. Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: I will use one off production because I will only be creating one. Product Lifespan and Recycling: I think the lifespan of my point of sale will be a few months to a year. I think this because I will use materials that are not used in permanent displays such as metal. Also I will make my design recyclable and easy to dispose of. Aesthetic Appearance: I will include the colour of red in my design because this is the colour that is used in the Old Spice branding. I will also use the Old Spice logo so that my target market have a clear idea of the brand. I will do this to ensure the safety of my customer when interacting with my point of sale display.

On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me to improve my design. Materials At first I thought about using wood or metal. But by using these materials it could cause a potential health hazard and cause injury to passing customers. I then considered using nylon or another type of cloth. By using these materials it decreases the health risks because they are softer materials. Components To begin with, I was going to use cogs and a motor to make the arms move. I then changed it to using a fan to blow air out of each side of the main body and make the arms flap about, in the same style of a wacky wavy arm flailing tube man. By doing this it will not cause major injury or health and safety issues Aesthetics I was originally going to make the arms dark brown to match the face of Terry Crews (the spokesman for Old Spice). But I changed the material from wood or metal to nylon for safety reasons. I decided to change the colour to red to match the main body, which is also the colour associated with Old Spice. Manufacture I will manufacture this part of my design by attaching a two foot long nylon tube to a fan. I will create two of these, one for each arm. Construction I will construct this part of my design by attaching the fans to either side of the main body with the nylon tube facing outwards. When a customer activates the point of sale display, the fans turn on and the nylon tubes start flailing about.
  • 44. Development 1 Frame for the Main Body I noticed that the frame of the main body, which is the main structure/ support for the point of sale can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Materials At first I thought about using wood because it is strong, durable and easily cut and shaped. Through my development I have changed this material to metal because it is stronger, lighter and more durable. By doing this it will make the overall weight of the point of sale lighter. Components Now that I have changed the material from wood to metal. I will have to use a MIG welding tool to weld the pieces of metal together. Manufacture Originally I was going to use nails to attach the wooden frame together. But now I have changed the material to metal, I will weld the pieces of metal together instead. By doing this it will make the frame stronger because the welded joints would be stronger than nails. Construction I will construct this part of my design by welding multiple pieces of metal together to create the shape of a cylinder. On one side it will have a cut out section where the products will be placed. There are also two holes on opposite sides towards the top of the point of sale. These holes will be for the arms to move in and out.
  • 45. Development 1 Storage space in main body I noticed that the storage space inside the main body, which is where all the products will be placed in the point of sale display, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Materials At first I thought about using plastic because it comes in a wide range of colours and finishes. But now I am going to change this material to cardboard because it is easily shaped and cut. Cardboard would be easier to use because I will be able to bend it into a circle, which is the shape of my design. Aesthetics Originally, I thought about painting the inside of the compartment red, to match the rest of the display and the colour of the Old Spice brand. But now I have decided that I will use the colour black because it will make the red bottles of Old Spice stand out. By doing this, it will make them stand out more against a black background. Manufacture Originally I was going to cut the cardboard out with a scalpel but I have decided to laser cut it instead. By doing this it will provide a higher level of accuracy and precision. Also it will take less time to cut. Construction I will construct this piece of my design by cutting a box made out of cardboard using a scalpel and inserting it into my design.
  • 46. Development 1 The frame of top of the display I noticed that the frame of the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Materials Originally, I thought about using wood because it is strong, durable and easily cut and shaped. Through my development I have changed this material to metal because it is stronger, lighter and more durable. By doing this it will make the point of sale more hard wearing. Manufacture Originally I was going to use a dowel joint to attach the pieces of wood together but because I have changed the material for this part of my design to metal, I will now weld the pieces of metal together. By doing this it will create a much stronger joint. Construction I will construct this part of my design by welding multiple pieces of metal together to create the shape of a dome. A smaller circle will be welded to the inside of the base of the dome, which will be attached to the metal dome using metal rods. This part is where the head for the man popping out of my design will attach to the dome.
  • 47. Development 1 Materials At first I thought about using cardboard because it is cheap, easy to cut and lightweight. But now I have decided to change this to plastic because I will be able to vacuum form it. By doing this it will make it easier to shape. Manufacture Originally, I was going to use a scalpel to cut it out of cardboard but now I have changed the material to plastic, I will use the vacuum former to create this part of my design. Construction I will construct this part of my design, I will make an MDF mould of the dome and vacuum form it then attach it to the metal frame and then to the main body. The top of the display I noticed that the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Usability This part of my design will move upwards when a sensor is triggered by the customer. A motor will turn a gear system which will push this part of my design upwards revealing the head of Terry Crews
  • 48. AESTHETICS: I will make my design for my point of sale with bright colours to make it eye-catching. I need to make my display bright to attract the attention of potential customers but not too bright that it puts them off. COST: I will aim to make my point of sale as cheap as possible to keep costs to a minimum. I will use as few materials as possible to reduce waste products and make my display more environmentally friendly. CUSTOMER: I think my target market is young, aged 16-30 and male. Potential customers could be female because they are buying the product as a gift. ENVIRONMENT: I think my point of sale display will be in a supermarket next to similar products in the corresponding department. SIZE: The size will need to be big enough to hold a at least 3 products by Old Spice to be able to promote their latest products and I would like to keep it to a minimalist look. SAFETY: No sharp edges, no loose wires, water-proof, energy efficient. FUNCTION: My point of sale display must be able to hold and display Old Spice products and promote their brand. I will make my display interactive to hold my customer’s attention longer. MATERIALS: I will make use of materials that are environmentally friendly, easily recyclable and make it sustainable. Potential materials that I make use of are: cardboard, plastic, wood, metal. AESTHETICS: I have met this requirement because I have made the colour the same as the Old Spice brand. By doing this it will allow my customers to identify the brand of the point of sale by the colour. COST: I have not met this requirement yet. CUSTOMER: I have met this requirement because I have created a design that will hopefully appeal to my target market. But I still think I can adapt this design to make it appeal more to my target market. ENVIRONMENT: I think I have met this requirement because my point of sale display will be situated near similar next to similar displays. SIZE: I think I have met this requirement because I have made my design large enough to hold multiple products. But I still feel that my design can be developed further SAFETY: I have met this requirement but I think I can still develop this idea more to make it safer for customers FUNCTION: I have met this requirement because my design can hold and display multiple products but I think I can still develop this idea more. MATERIALS: I think I have met this requirement because I intend to use some recyclable materials but I still feel I can make my design more environmentally friendly through development. • 49. Development 2 Frame for the Main Body I noticed that the frame of the main body, which is the main structure/ support for the point of sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Materials I am now going to change the material from metal to wood. I am going to do this because it will be easier to cut and join. Also it is cheaper than using metal, this is key because it is one of the requirements of my specification. Manufacture I am now going to change my joining method back to using nails and dowel joints. I have decided to do this because welding is a difficult method to use. Also there is the cost aspect of it. I have chosen nails because it is an easier joining method Components I am going to use a hammer and nails to join this part of my design together. I am going to use these because I have changed the material from metal to wood , which means I am unable to weld wood together therefore I will use nails instead Construction I am going to construct this part of my design by nailing together pieces of wood with a hammer and nails. I will also use dowel joints to make the joints stronger and more durable.
  • 50. Development 2 I noticed that the storage space inside the main body, which is where all the products will be placed within the point of sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Materials I am going to use acrylic instead of cardboard because it is stronger and more durable. Also it is easier to cut and shape. I changed this because this part of my design will come into contact with liquids (i.e. the Old Spice products.) which means it could get wet and cardboard isn’t waterproof whereas acrylic is. Manufacture I am going to vacuum form this part of my design because it will be quicker and more efficient. Also the part would be quite strong because only one piece of acrylic will be used. Storage space in main body Components I will use a vacuum former to create this part of my design. Because I have changed the material to acrylic, I have changed the creation method to this because it will be stronger due to the fact that it is only one piece of acrylic. Construction I will construct this part of my design by creating an MDF mould in the shape of a rectangle. I will then place the mould into the vacuum former and vacuum form the acrylic into the shape of the mould. Once the acrylic has cooled down I will cut away any excess using a gerbil cutter. Finally I will insert the piece of acrylic into my design Aesthetics I have chosen to make this piece of my design out of black acrylic because it will make the Old Spice products stand out more. This is because the Old Spice brand uses the predominant colour of red in all their products. Therefore it will make the products stand out more because it is red on a black background.
  • 51. Development 2 I noticed that the frame of the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. The frame of the top of the display Materials I have decided to change the material of this part to wood instead of metal because it will be easier to cut and join. Also it will be cheaper than welding pieces of metal together Components I will use dowel joints and super glue to attach the pieces of wood together. I will also use a drill to drill the holes for the dowels to go into and also a scroll saw to cut the wood out. I am doing this because a dowel joint is stronger than using nails. Construction I will construct this part of my design by drilling holes in the end of each piece of wood. I will then insert some super glue into the hole and then insert dowels into it. Next I will cover the end of the piece of wood with super glue. I will also insert more superglue into the other hole the dowel is going into. Finally join the two pieces of wood together.
  • 52. Development 2 I noticed that the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. The top of the display Usability When the user presses a button, it will release the top of the display revealing Terry Crews head. The top will be pushed upwards by struts, commonly found in car boots. Components I will use a dome blowing unit to create this part of my design. I will do this because I will be able to create a perfect dome which will sit on top of the frame. Manufacture I will place a piece of red HIP into the dome blowing unit and secure it down with the clamps. Once the dome has formed to the size I want, I will remove it and attach it to the frame, which will then be attached to the main body. Materials I will use HIP to create this part of my design because it is easily cut, shaped and light- weight. Also it can be vacuum formed which will be how I am going to create this part.
  • 53. Development 2 I noticed that the main body can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. The main body Construction I am going to change the method of attaching the HIP outer shell together. Originally I was going to use Tensol cement but now I am going to use a pop rivet to attach the sheet together. I am going to use this method because it is a cleaner finish and is a more sustainable permanent joint. Materials I was originally going to use red acrylic but I am now going to use red HIP (high impact polystyrene) because it is lighter, stronger and easier to bend/ shape. Also it is cheaper than acrylic. Components For this part of my design I will use a drill to firstly drill the holes where I am going to attach the HIP together. I am also going to use a pop rivet gun to attach the HIP sheet together. I am going to use a pop rivet because it is a neat and tidy method of joining things together and is also quick and easy to do. Usability The user will walk up to the display. There will be a button at the top of the main body. It will be just above the storage space. This is the button that will trigger the top of the display to pop up. The button will be black so it will stand out on the red HIP main body.
  • 54. AESTHETICS: I have further developed this aspect of my design and I have made my design more aesthetically pleasing for the customer. I have done this by making all the design red to match the Old Spice branding. I have also made the inside of the storage space black to make the Old Spice products stand out more. COST: I still haven’t met this requirement yet because I do not have a complete understanding of the prices of the materials I need for my design. CUSTOMER: I have further met this requirement because I have designed a display that will hopefully appeal to the target market of Old Spice. I have designed a display which the target market of Old Spice will be easily recognise. ENVIRONMENT: I think I have met this requirement because my point of sale display will be situated near similar next to similar displays. SIZE: I think I understand that I will need to make my design big enough that it will stand out from other point of sales and hold multiple Old Spice products. SAFETY: I think I have met this requirement because I will not have any sharp edges or other safety issues. FUNCTION: I have met this requirement because the main function of my design was to hold multiple Old Spice products. Also I have designed it to attract attention to the point of sale. MATERIALS: I think I have met this requirement because I have changed the material of the frame for my design from metal to wood. I have done this because it is easier to join and recycle. AESTHETICS: I will make my design for my point of sale with bright colours to make it eye-catching. I need to make my display bright to attract the attention of potential customers but not too bright that it puts them off. • 55. Development 3 The arms I noticed that the arms, which move in and out of the main body, could be a potential health hazard. i.e. people could be hit by them as they move out. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Usability This part of my design will flap around when air is pumped through them from a fan concealed inside the display. When a button is pushed the fans will activate causing the nylon arm to flap around in a similar fashion to a wacky wavy arm flailing tube man. By doing this it will hopefully attract customers attention and also add a bit of humour to the display. Construction I will have to drill multiple holes into the back of the main body. This is for ventilation, i.e. for the fans to draw air from. The holes will allow air to flow into the display and then back out via the arms/ fans. I have to insert a method of ventilation to allow the fans to operate properly. I will make the holes big enough so that a sufficient amount of air can be drawn in and out at the same time and also be discreet so it does not spoil the aesthetic look of the display. Materials I am changing the material from nylon to foam. I am doing this because I am not going to use a fan anymore. I have changed the material because I have had difficulty getting the nylon arms to inflate fully. I made this decision when I tested if a hairdryer had the capability to inflate the arms fully. As shown in the picture below. Manufacture I am changing the way in which the arms will move. Instead of using a fan to make the arms wave about, I am going to use two pieces of foam attached to a cam. I am doing this because I have noticed that I will need a very powerful fan in order for it all to work. The cam will be powered by a motor, which is also powering the head. I will attach a piece of string to the foam and the cam. When the cam turns the string will make the foam arm move up and down.
  • 56. Development 3 Frame for the Main Body I noticed that the frame of the main body, which is the main structure/ support for the point of sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Manufacture I am going to change the joining method to only using a dowel joint instead of using nails. I have decided to do this because a dowel joint is a stronger joining method than using nails. There is also the safety aspect to it as well. i.e. after the point of sale has been used and has to be disposed of, nails will cause splinters when frame is broken down. However, a dowel joint wouldn’t. Components I will use dowels to join the wooden frame together. I will do this by drilling holes in the end of each part of the frame. Then I will insert a dowel into one end of the piece of wood using a hammer. Finally I will place the other piece of wood, which is being joined to the first piece, onto the other end of the dowel. I will repeat this method for all joints in the wooden frame. I am doing this because a dowel joint is a stronger and safer joining method instead of nails. Construction I will place a wooden cylinder in the base of the display. I am going to do this because I want to add more stability to the display. By adding weight to the base it will hopefully make the display less likely to fall over if someone bumps into it. I have done this to make my point of sale display safer and more stable.
  • 57. Development 3 Storage space in main body I noticed that the storage space inside the main body, which is where all the products will be placed in the point of sale, can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Materials I am changing the material that I am going to use for this part of my design from acrylic to HIP. I am going to do this because I am unable to vacuum form acrylic because I do not have the equipment to do so. Also by using HIP instead of acrylic it will reduce the weight of the point of sale because it is a lighter material.
  • 58. Development 3 The top of the display I noticed that the top of the display can be improved and developed to enhance its design. On this slide I will look at multiple development aspects that will help me improve my design. Manufacture I have changed this part of my design to use a cam to push the top of the display upwards. I have changed this part from using car boot struts. This is because it allows the design to open and close by itself whereas the struts only open by themselves not close. Construction I will construct the cam part of my design by creating an egg shaped wheel with a piston on top and motor attached to the side. I am using a motor to power the cam. When the cam is turned, the piston will be pushed up. The piston is attached to the top of my design which will be pushed upwards Components Now that I have changed my design from using struts to a cam and a motor, I will use a laser cutter to cut out the wooden cam. I am going to use a laser cutter because it is more accurate than cutting it out by hand.
  • 59. Click to play Development Model This slide shows the model I made of the CAM/ mechanism that will go inside of the main body of the point of sale display. The picture on the left shows the model front on, the one in the bottom left corner shows it in side view. Finally the one directly below is a video of the model in action. As you can see as the rod (wooden skewer) turns, the egg shaped cams (cardboard disks inside the model) rotate. As they rotate they will push another rod (piston) up and down. This is how the arms and head will move.

  • 68. Evaluation Evaluation from Client Target Market: I think the design looks interesting and is in keeping with the branding of Old Spice Functions: I think it does what it is meant to do, namely, attract attention Materials: I think more environmentally friendly materials could have been used Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I think when the design is built at full size, it will be even more interactive with people because it is a similar size to the user. Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: I think this display would be difficult to mass produce unless the design is altered slightly due to the complexity of the design. Product Lifespan and Recycling: I think the lifespan will be the same length as the advertising campaign which can vary from a few months to years Aesthetic Appearance: It looks very interesting because it has bright colours which makes the design eye-catching. The colours I have used match the colours of the Old Spice brand. Quality Control: It appears from inspection of the end product that quality has been maintained throughout the project Time Scale and Planning: The end product was delivered on time as was requested and this means that effective planning has taken place Health And Safety: I couldn’t see any stand out health and safety hazards associated with the product which appears to be safe to be placed in a public environment. Evaluation from User Target Market: I think the design is very interesting and unique from other companies. I feel I would be more likely to buy a product because it has an imaginative design idea with eye-catching colours which match the branding. Functions: This display serves its purpose of attracting the attention of potential customers because of its unusual design, movable parts and interactivity. Materials: I think the materials used could be improved to be more environmentally friendly as outlined in the specification, for example using cardboard instead of acrylic. Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I think when the display is at full size, interactivity will be better because the display is a similar size to the user. Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: The design looks to be made of good quality. Product Lifespan and Recycling: I think the lifespan of this display would not be very long because advertising campaigns and promotions change frequently. Aesthetic Appearance: Looks good, nice and bright appearance, eye-catching. Quality Control: I think the quality is good. There are no major defects and the design meets the required specification and the product is fully functional Health And Safety: On close inspection, I could not see any health and safety hazards with the product.
  • 69. Evaluation My Evaluation Target Market: I believe I have designed a point of sale display for Old Spice aimed at males aged between 16-30. I think I have done this because I have made my design interactive, so hopefully my potential customers will be intrigued and want to interact with the display. I also used bright colours. I did this because I learnt from my research that these two factors (interactivity and bright colours) were some of the highest ranked ways of attracting the attention of my target market Functions: I believe I have designed a point of sale display for Old Spice that will appeal to my target market because of its functionality. I think this because from my research I found out that my target market prefers a point of sale display that is interactive. I have changed the style of my display from being a flat-packed design to a pre-built ready to use design. I have done this because it will allow quality and consistency to be maintained across all displays made. Materials: To build my point of sale display for Old Spice, I have used acrylic to build my prototype. I intend to use more sustainable and easily recyclable materials when my design is scaled up to its full size. I used acrylic because an acrylic tube was available to use at the time. Ergonomics/ Overall Sizes: I believe I have designed a point of sale that is large enough to hold multiple Old Spice products. I think this because my prototype that has been scaled down is able to hold a single Old Spice product. So when my display is at full size it will be able to hold multiple products. Also the full size design will be more interactive with the customers because it is a similar size to them (approx. 4ft) Manufacturing Processes and Quantity: My design is ideal for one off production. It is has too many individual parts to be mass produced in its current format. However with a few alterations to certain parts of my design, this will allow my design to be mass produced e.g. injection moulding the top of the display instead of using a dome blower. Product Lifespan and Recycling: Although for my prototype I used acrylic to make my design, when it is produced commercially at full size I will use materials that are easier to dispose/ recycle (e.g. cardboard). I will do this because it will make my design more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Aesthetic Appearance: I used the colour red as the primary colour for my design. I did this because it is the same colour as the Old Spice brand. I also used white for the Old Spice name and logo because this is also the colour of the Old Spice branding Quality Control: I carried out multiple quality control checks throughout the manufacture of my point of sale display prototype. For example I made sure that the dome was large enough to fit the main body. Also, I made sure there were no air bubbles in the vinyl logo. Another quality control was that I made sure that the arms were the correct size and width and were the same size. I did these multiple checks to ensure high quality was maintained throughout the manufacture of my design Time Scale and Planning: Generally I managed my time well throughout my project but there were some points during the process that could have been managed a bit better. This is because I came across a complication which required me to adapt/ change my design to overcome it. e.g. the size of the storage space. Health and Safety: During the design and manufacture of my point of sale prototype, I made sure that there were no health and safety implications. I did this by checking for sharp edges or major defect that could cause damage to users. For example I changed the original arms I designed form moving up and down to static because I was worried the up and down movement may cause injury to users.
  • 70. Evaluation Moral, Social, Cultural and Environmental Moral: Although my point of sale display is to promote Old Spice products as a fashionable item that my target market will want, people might buy this for the sake of buying (rather than really needing it). This wastes resources and has a negative effect on the environment Social: For the parts of my design, I plan to use machines and robotics to produce them. I decided to do this because the output accuracy and consistency is higher. Also it is cheaper because robots don’t need wages. A social implication is caused by this. This is because, the introduction of machines and robotics into the workforce would cause a mass job losses. Although every company wants to cut costs as much as possible but there is a social extent you could go to. Environmental: When my point of sale display reaches the end of its product life, the next issue to overcome is disposal of it. In my prototype I have predominately uses acrylic. Most plastics are not bio-degradable (breaks down naturally), they can be recycled and re-used. Although, I intend to use more environmentally friendly materials such as cardboard for the real point of sale. I have still taken into consideration the environmental impacts that surround plastics. Cultural: During the process of deciding what stores and in which countries I will use to display my point of sale. During this time, I have to take into consideration the cultural impacts of my point of sale. For example, the base colour for the Old Spice brand (red) has different meanings in different countries. I.E. in China red symbolises good fortune, whereas in South Africa red is the colour of mourning. This shows that something as basic as colour could influence the buying habits of potential customers.
  • 71. Modifications for Mass Market Production This page highlights the modifications required before my product can be mass produced The vinyl Old Spice Name and Logo Sticker I would not change the manufacturing process itself but the amount produced per cut. I would do this because it will reduce the amount of waste materials and time taken to cut them out. This can be done by tessellating the design so that multiple stickers are produced per sheet of vinyl compared to one per sheet (which is what I did for my prototype) The top/lid of the display I would change the method used to create this part of my design from using a vacuum former to using an injection moulder. I would use this method because a larger quantity can be produced over a period of time compared to vacuum forming it. The mechanics inside the main body I would adapt the design to make it easier to manufacture and assemble. The components could be broken down into sections. Parts could be tessellated on one sheet of material. By doing this it would save waste material and will reduce overall cost of production and would make the design more environmentally friendly. The foam head I would change the way in which I produced the foam head part of my design by tessellating the design on one piece of foam. By doing this it would save money time and material.
  • 72. Development Evaluation I had to adapt the storage compartment by extending the space outside of the main tube. I had to do this because the mechanics inside the design were larger than anticipated I removed the concept of the arms from my design. I did this for health and safety reasons because I was worried it would cause injury to someone. Also, the arm would not stick fully to the main body I moved the vinyl sticker of the Old Spice name and logo from the top of the display (the dome part). I did this because there was more space on the main body above the storage space. This enabled the text size to be increased to make it easier to read. I had to adapt the manufacture of the dome part from using a dome blowing unit to using a vacuum former. I did this because the dome blower couldn't produce a big enough dome to match the height and diameter of the main body. I changed the material of the arms from foam to aluminium rods. I did this because the foam arms didn't look very aesthetically pleasing whereas the aluminium arms did. I changed the mechanics from being powered by a motor to be hand powered. I did this because it was not feasible to fit it into the main body of the design along with all the other mechanics and components.

  • 74. Testing Test 1 I tested the mechanics inside of the main body to make sure they were fully functional. During the test the piston kept getting stuck in the wheel. This was because it was catching the frame. I resolved this by adjusting the frame and it runs smoothly now. The video below shows the mechanics being tested. Test 2 I then attached the handle through the back of the design to the mechanics . As shown in the video below the test went smoothly and there were no complications. Test 3 I then attached the head and dome to the mechanics inside the main body. I conducted a test to make sure that everything worked properly. The video shows the test.
