CISA 101 – 3 CREDITS SPRING 2015
Course Description
This course is designed to help students develop the skills to meet the Computer Literacy requirements for
graduation from College of Western Idaho (CWI). This course will provide an overview of hardware
components, operating systems, e-mail, Internet, networks, and application software. No pre-requisite
classes or computer skills are required, but, for students that are not familiar with computer operating
systems and applications, taking the CISA 001 course would be advised.
A complete Table of Contents is located on page two and three. Courses are listed on page 4.

While it is your responsibility to read and understand the contents of the entire syllabus, I have compiled a

If This Class Seems Too Difficult For You
If in the first week of the semester this class seems too difficult, I highly suggest you drop it and take the
CISA 001 course. The 001 course provides the very basics you will need to get started at CWI. If
you are having difficulties in an online CISA class, you may want to drop it and take this course on
campus. Your instructor wants you to succeed, so be honest with yourself and decide if this class is right
for you.
What To Do The First Day Of Class
Log into your Bb course, read the announcements then head over to the Assignments tab on the first day
of the semester. You will most likely need headphones and a flash drive. There will be videos to watch
and you'll need headphones so you can hear instructions on the video, unless you have a quiet place and
can use your computer speakers. If you take this class on campus or you use the school computer labs
you will need to have headphones! You will also need to be able to back up your work on your computer,
a flashdrive and/or Onedrive (this is ‘cloud storage’.)
Contact Information/How To Communicate With Your
Instructor
Email is the best way to contact your instructor. Your instructor’s email address is listed at the top of the
syllabus. You are certainly welcome to contact your instructor via a phone call but I may not be in the
office often during the semester as I travel to multiple campuses throughout the week so your call may not
get returned for several days, however, you will get a quick response (barring unusual circumstances) if
you use email. Plus, emails create an electronic record of communications between staff and student. This
can be very beneficial if something needs to be verified in the future. I will try to answer all emails within
24 hours, Mon-Friday. Please do not expect a response from me on Saturday, Sunday or holidays.
CWI Email
Email is very common method for instructors and students to communicate at CWI and it is important for
you know how to use this powerful tool. Every student has their own, personal CWI email account and it
is your responsibility to learn how to log into your CWI email account, check and send email messages.
Your instructor may ask you retrieve messages during the semester which contain important class
information. Get in the habit of checking emails often so you are sure to get important updates and
information. Contact OneStop if you don’t know how to access your CWI email account.

How To Access And Log Into Your CWI Email Account
You can access your CWI email account by going to www.mycwi.cc, then look for the email link. You
can also type the following URL directly into your browser: mail.mycwi.cc (do not type in www or
http://).
Your default password for both Bb and your email accounts will be the first letter of your firstname in
CAPS + first letter of your last name in CAPS + “logon” in lower-case letters + last 4 digits of your SSN;
if you don’t have a SSN, then use the last 4 digits of your student ID number (Ex: Jonathan Smith’s
password would be JSlogon1234).
If you still have problems, contact the CWI helpdesk at 562-3444.
Have Problems Logging Into Your CWI Email Account?
If you are new to email and/or have problems logging into your account, you should do the following:
o Contact the CWI Helpdesk. You can find their contact information on the CWI website, or you
can call them directly at 562-3444 (hours vary.) OR
o Head to a CWI tutoring center. Most tutors will be able to help you learn how to use your email
account. Your Blackboard login and password should work for your CWI email.
For traditional/hybrid students, ask your instructor for assistance during class after you have tried the
above listed steps.
For online students, make an appointment with your instructor after you have tried the above listed steps.
Failure to know how to access and use your CWI email may result in you not being able to complete
some assignments and assessments.
How To Email Your Instructor
When you email your instructor, be sure to be brief, and to-the-point. Also include your name and the
course name and number in the email. Here is an example of a good email:
Professor Smith:
I am Amy Mitchell from your CISA-101-033 Thursday evening class, and I have a question about
the assignment from Thursday, 1/23/13. I thought that we needed to complete both sections, am I
correct? Can you please help me?

Using Your CWI Email Account To Send The Email
Since emails can contains viruses, your instructor may only open up emails that are sent from your CWI
email account. Emails sent from your personal account may not be opened.

Definition of Online, Traditional and Hybrid Students
CWI offers three types of classes: traditional, hybrid and online. This course may include students from
my online, traditional and hybrid classes. It is important to know which class you are in so you can get
the most accurate information. Here is a definition of each type of student:
Traditional Students - Students who have all of their classes on campus. Some assessments will be
taken in class, however, most assignments and assessments will be completed online. School computers
will be available for you to use. See the section in this syllabus about using your own/personal computer.
I will NOT stand up in front of class and lecture. I will make your assignments available to you, perhaps
give a short mini-lesson, and then you’ll work on your assignments and assessments on your own. I will
be in class to assist you when you struggle but it will be up to you to tell me when you are struggling.
Most, if not all of the information needed to pass this class will be available and completed online. You
must do your part in terms of problem solving and doing the necessary work so I can help you get the
most out of this class.
Hybrid Students – Students who have approximately half of their classes on campus and approximately
half of their classes are online. Some assessments will be taken in class, however, most assignments and
assessments will be completed online. School computers will be available for you to use. See the section
in this syllabus about using your own/personal computer.

The Course Calendar
A complete Course Calendar/Schedule will be available in Blackboard (located in the
Syllabus/Calendar tab.) The Course Calendar will let you know exactly what is due, when it’s due,
and where it must be taken. Due dates/times listed elsewhere may not be accurate so look at your
own Course Calendar every week. Occasionally I may need to modify the Course Calendar. If I make
major changes, I will post an announcement in Blackboard and send an email. It is your responsibility to
look at your own Course Calendar often so you know what is due, and when.
TIP – Type in all due dates/times in your smartphone calendar so you don’t miss important
deadlines.

Textbook, Required Materials and Office
365/Office2013
Purchase Your Class Text At the CWI Bookstore
We HIGHLY recommend that you buy your text at the CWI bookstore. Why? Too often students
purchase the wrong materials if they attempt to purchase school materials elsewhere. The two options
offered this semester (see below for details) were prepared specifically for CWI. If you choose to buy
your materials elsewhere, you will instructor will NOT be able to help you if you run into issues.
Textbook Options
You will have two text options this semester:
Option 1 (ISBN # 9781259279409) - SIMnet Office Suite Registration access card standalone. This
option will give you full online access to all assignments and assessments. In addition, you will have
access an electronic (eBook) version of your text. Many students choose this option because of price.
To make life interesting, if you shop on the CWI online bookstore website (the college bookstore), this
option is labeled as follows (yes, it is confusing):
LSC CPSZ(COLL WEST IDAHO) CIS
It is listed this way as of May, 2014 - they may change this verbiage to make more sense but right now it's
has that strange title.
Option 2 (ISBN # 9781259232701) - SIMnet Office Suite Registration access card packaged with
printed loose leaf chapters (hardcopy) of Nordell Microsoft Office 2013 In Practice text. This option
includes full online access to SIMnet (everything included with Option 1) plus you will receive a
hardcopy of the text. Please note that many students don’t feel the need to have a hardcopy version of the
text because everything is provided online, however, some students may feel more comfortable with a
printed version which is why we offer Option 2.
This option is labeled the following on the CWI online bookstore website:
Nordell Microsoft Office 2013 LL w/ SIMnet
This title may change in the future but as of 2014 it is still labeled this way.
From my experience I will tell you that a majority of students don’t feel need to purchase a hardcopy of
the text, but you must decide for yourself what option is right for you.
I don’t believe you can purchase the text separately, so decide in advance which option is best for you.
If you chose to buy the code/book elsewhere (which you were instructed not to do), we can not help you.
The CWI bookstore will gladly exchange any incorrect purchases made at the bookstore.

Office 365 – Free Trial
When you buy your text/code from the bookstore, included in the package should be a free 180 trial of
Office 365 – see below for more details. If you use Office 365, this will work just fine because it includes
the latest version of the required programs: Word 2013, Excel 2013 and PowerPoint 2013.
Office 365 and Office 2013 – What Is The Difference?
Great question. If you choose to use your own computer, you will need the latest Microsoft Office
product, often referred to as Office 2013. To make things more complicated, Microsoft offers about 14
different versions of Office 2013, one of these being Office 365.
Students must have access to the latest version (the 2013 version) of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Both
options listed below include the required programs.
Office 2013 – this a suite of products from Microsoft which is bundled together. This bundle includes
Word 2013, Excel 2013, and PowerPoint 2013 (often referred to as PP), just to name a few. This option
will work for CISA students but it’s often more expensive that Office 365 (see below for details.)
Office 365 – This is the option our bookstore currently sells. Office 365 includes Word 2013, Excel
2013, and PP 2013. The unique feature about this package is that after you buy it, you’ll need to renew
your subscription with Microsoft on an annual basis. See the bookstore for details. Office 365 will give
you what you need for this class.
Will Office 2010 Work?
Certain assignments, called Projects, will NOT work properly with anything other than Office 2013
(Office 2013 includes Word 2013, Excel 2013, and PowerPoint 2013). Office 2010 products may cause
problems which will result in a lower grade. This is why we always suggest that you use a school
computer if you don’t have Office 2013 on your home computer.
Having said that, some students did choose to use Office 2010 products in the spring and most of the time
they were able to complete a majority of project tasks, however, it often caused them to get a lower grade
because some of the features on Office 2013 are slightly different than on 2010. If you choose to use
something other than Office 2013 products you run the risk of earning a lower grade which may or may
not be acceptable to you.

I have posted a video explaining the difference between Office 2013 and Office 365. This video can be
found in Bb: Click on the Course Documents folder, then click the SIMnet Resources folder, lastly select
the SIMnet Training videos folder.
SIMnet
A majority of your assignments and assessments this semester will be completed using a program called
SIMnet. SIMnet is a computer program created by publisher McGraw-Hill.
SIMnet Fast Facts:
 You will access SIMnet through a link in Bb
 Use the Firefox Browser when using SIMnet (I can’t stress this enough)
 If you run into problems with SIMnet, your first step is to call their helpline 1-800-331-5094

 Get a case number when you call the SIMnet Support line. I will ask for this if you contact me
 It is highly recommended that you use a school computer when completing SIMnet assignments
and assessments.
 Home computers can cause SIMnet errors. Even brand new home computers may cause problems.
I will not extend deadlines for any reason so get to your work early each week
SIMnet works well on school computers, but may not work properly if you use your own computer. It is
important to understand that you must get started with your work early each week so if you run into
problems, you have the time to find a solution. I will not extend deadlines because you waited until
the last minute and had issues.
How To Access SIMnet
You will access SIMnet using the link provided in Bb (it is on the left side of your Bb page) labeled
“SIMnet (click here)”. You will need to get registered the first time you click the SIMnet link. I have
provided a great video in Bb to help you: Course Documents folder/SIMnet Resources folder. Be sure to
watch the video before you attempt to get registered. You will only have to complete the registration
process once.
21 Day Free SIMnet Trial!
SIMnet provides a 21 day free trial if you haven’t purchased your access code yet. The registration video
in the Course Documents/SIMnet Resources folder shows you how to get your free trial.
If you chose to use the 21 day free trial, you will need to input the access code before the 21 days is up,
otherwise, you will be locked out of the system until you obtain the access code.
Common Problems With SIMnet
Using a school computer will nearly eliminate most, if not all problems with SIMnet. In general, the most
common issues that come up are:
o Using the wrong browser (Firefox is best. Explorer will cause problems)
o The computer doesn’t have Flash installed properly (if at all)
o The Popup blocker blocks the program from running properly
School computers should have Flash installed properly and the popup blocker set correctly.
What To Do If You Run Into A Problem On A School Computer
If you are using a school computer, the most common source of problems is using the wrong browser.
School computers default to using the Explorer Browser, but Explorer will cause problems. You should
be sure to use the Firefox browser.
If you are still having issues, contact the SIMnet Support line. Their phone number is:

When you call the SIMnet Support line, be sure to get a case number.

What To Do If You Run Into A On Your Home Computer
The first thing you should do is run a “Systems Requirements Test” on your own computer. Here are the
steps you need to follow:
Step 1. Access the system test by going to cwidaho.simnetonline.com (do not type www or http//)
Step 2. Click on the System Requirements Test link toward the bottom right side of the page
Step 3. Fix any deficiencies that are noted by the diagnostic test
If you are still having issues, contact the SIMnet Support line. Their phone number is:
1-800-331-5094 SIMnet Support line
Please note that if you access SIMnet through the link provided in Bb, you may not see the system test
page. You will need to follow the steps listed above.
Also note that even if your computer “passed” the System Requirements Test, this is no guarantee that
SIMnet will work properly which is why we always recommend that you use a school computer.
How To Access SIMnet If The Link In Bb Is Not Working
If the link to SIMnet in Bb is not working, you can access the SIMnet login page directly by typing this
URL into your Firefox browser: cwidaho.simnetonline.com (do not type in www or http//). When
you reach the login page, type in your user name and password to access SIMnet.
How To Retrieve Your SIMnet User Name And/Or Password
Once you registered with SIMnet by using the link provided in Bb, you should not have to use your user
name and password again, however, if you need to access SIMnet through their login website outside of
Bb you’ll need your user name and password.
Your instructor does NOT have access to your user name or password. You will need to go to the
SIMnet login page, cwidaho.simnetonline.com (do not type in www or http//), then click on “Forgot
Credentials” link. Follow the instructions to retrieve your user name and/or password.
If you still cannot access SIMnet, you will need to contact the SIMnet support line to retrieve your user
name and password. Their phone number is 1-800-331-5094.
Use The Proper Browser When Using SIMnet
SIMnet works best when you access the Internet using the Firefox browser. The Explorer browser often
causes problems when completing SIMbook activities and the assessments. It is your responsibility to
access the Internet using the correct browser so you can avoid problems.
What If You Encounter A Problem With A SIMbook (show me, guide me, let me try)
Some of the assignments you will complete on SIMnet are called SIMbooks, or simulation books. In
these activities, the SIMbook has a feature called Show Me, Guide Me, Let Me Try. Once in a while you
may encounter an issue with this feature and the computer won’t give you credit on one of the steps. Do
NOT get upset as I can adjust your grade later. Simply move on to the next activity then tell me about the
issue when you see me in class. Online students – feel free to send me an email about the issue. If there
are known glitches I may give the entire class extra points to compensate for the error. Each show me,

guide me, let me try activities are not worth much so don’t be too concerned about missing a few, it will
all even out in the end.
Use Of Personal Computers/Devices
While you may be able to use your personal computer/device to complete many of your assignments and
assessments, it is not recommended. School computers are maintained and monitored by IT professionals,
and these school computers are available for you to complete your coursework.
Professor, why do you recommend using school computers?
School computers are monitored and maintained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by highly trained IT
professionals which ensure that they work properly. Home computers/devices may not be set up and
maintained properly which can cause problems when completing assignments and assessments.
Professor, is it mandatory that we use a school computer?
No, but we will not be responsible if you can’t complete your work if you use your home
computer/device.
Professor, what happens if I have an issue while using my home computer/device?
If you are working on a SIMnet activity and encounter a problem, you can call the SIMnet support line at
1-800-331-5094. If you call them be sure to get a case number. They may or may not be able to help you.
Professor, can you help me if I encounter a problem using my personal computer/device?
No, I can not help you. I am not authorized or trained to troubleshoot personal computer/device problems.
Professor, will you extend a deadline if I encounter a computer problem?
No, I will not be able to reset assignments and/or extend deadlines because you have encountered a
problem when using your own computer OR a school computer. Get to your work early and often, so if
you run into a problem, you will have time find a solution.
If you choose to use your own computer be sure to work ahead so if you do run into a problem, you have
time to come one of the several campus locations and use a school computer.
Please do not ask me to extend a deadline as it is not fair to those work get their work done on time.
Can I use a Mac for this class?
Yes and no. Some assignments and assessments will only require you to have internet access since they
are web-based, so for these activities a Mac should work just fine (but please read the notes above
regarding home computer useage.) Some assignments (called projects) require you to use a PC since you
will need to use Word 2013, Excel 2013 and PowerPoint 2013. You will not be able to use Office for
Mac to complete projects. You would need to either use a campus computer and/or use another computer
that has the proper Office programs installed for these activities.

Please note that your home computer, whether it’s a Mac or a PC still may NOT work with SIMnet. We
can not guarantee that your computer is set up correctly - you always have the option of using a school
computer for your assignments and assessments.
Minimum Home Computer/Device Software Requirements
While the minimum criteria for your home computer/device is listed below, this does NOT guarantee that
your computer/device will work properly. Using a school computer is always recommended.
o Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.0 or higher
o Firefox browser
o Microsoft Windows 7
o Microsoft Office 2013/Office 365 (both of these options have Word 2013, Excel 2013 and
PowerPoint 2013): Many assignments (called projects) are specific to Microsoft Office
2013/Office 365 and it will be difficult, if not impossible, to complete these if you do not have
access to Office 2013/Office 365. All campus computers should contain Office 2013/Office365 so
feel free to use them.
Storage Device Is Required
Student will need a storage device of their choice. CISA faculty advises that you use OneDrive or a flash
drive [also called a thumb drive or jump drive] and a notebook for notes. If you are working on your
personal computer/device, you can save work directly to your hard drive but it is suggested that you back
up your work.
Late Work/Make-Up Work Policy:
Graded work in this class can not be made up. If you miss an assignment, activity, a lecture, an exam, or
the paper (anything that will carry a grade), it will not be accepted late for any reason unless you follow
the steps below.
The good news is that we will have a lot of assignments and assessments this semester so should
something come up and you do miss something, it won’t kill your GPA as long as you have been keeping
up with your other assignments and assessments. In other words, many assignments and assessments are
weighted equally so missing one or two assignments or assessments won’t cause you to fail this course
and won’t severely damage your GPA. The exception is the 4 mandatory tests/exams. Missing one or
more of the 4 mandatory tests/exams will cause you to fail this course. See the section in this syllabus
regarding mandatory tests/exams for more details.
Have An Exceptional Reason For Missing Work?
Should there be an exceptional reason for missing graded work, students are welcome to follow the steps
listed below. Please note that exceptions are extremely rare and will only be considered after the
following criteria are met:
Step 1. Student has an exceptional reason (Exceptional in the opinion of the instructor) for missing an
assignment and/or assessment.
Step 2. The student can provide DETAILED and COMPREHENSIVE support documentation supporting
their reason. This documentation should be SCANNED, ATTACHED THEN EMAILED to the instructor
with the initial emailed request. If you have not included this detailed and comprehensive supporting
documentation with your request, it will not be considered.

Step 3. Student has followed up with a phone or live conversation with the instructor after the instructor
has confirmed by email that you have a valid reason for missing work. Please note - this
meeting/conversation will only be scheduled by the instructor after you have completed steps 1 and 2
above. Your instructor will email with instructions once you have completed steps 1 and 2.
The bottom line here is that if you are taking this class, you are an adult. Act accordingly by budgeting
your time and being proactive as a student.
Extra Credit?
It is possible that I will give out extra credit during the semester. If I choose to do this, I will post an
announcement in Bb. Please do not ask for extra credit as I don’t take requests. If you do all of your
assignments and assessments you should do fine in this class.
You Could Be Dropped From This Course…Participation
Verification for Financial Aid
All CWI Instructors are required to report attendance and course participation during the first week to One
Stop Student Services for financial aid purposes. Attendance is defined below. If you do not meet
attendance standards (outlined below), you can be dropped from the course.
Instructor Initial Drops
Students may be automatically dropped from the course within the first portion of the semester – known
as the census date. Contact OneStop for the exact census date/time. If a student fails to successfully
complete assigned work up to the census date they may be dropped from the course. The requirements
will be listed below.
After the first two weeks of the semester the instructor will decide if a student should be automatically
dropped from the course. This information will be given to OneStop who will initiate the drop procedure.

Minimum Week 1 and Week 2 Requirements
Logging into your CISA 101 Bb course and completing ALL of the work assigned during the first two
weeks of the semester will meet the attendance requirement for this course. This includes taking the
Syllabus Quiz, assignments A01, A02 and A03 and the PowerPoint Chapter 1 SIMbook assignment
assigned during the first two weeks of the semester. See the Course Calendar/Schedule on Blackboard for
a complete list of tasks, assignments and assessments that must be completed by the census date.
If you don’t meet the minimum requirements listed above and on the Course Calendar/Schedule,
you will be automatically dropped from this course.
During The Rest Of The Semester
Traditional, Hybrid and Online Students – It is expected that you complete assignments and
assessments regularly and take assessments on time. I do not accept late work.

You Could Fail This Course
Consistent, active participation is necessary in this course. If you have more than 8 zeros on any
combination of assignments and/or assessments (any work that is graded), you may fail this course.
You may also fail this course if you fail to complete any of the 4 mandatory test/exams. These
tests/exams will be listed on your Course Calendar/Schedule which can be found on Blackboard.
You may also fail this course if your overall grade average is below a 60%.
Methods of Delivery
Testing/Assessments
The main objective of this class is for students to demonstrate computer literacy. There will be skills
assignments, tests and projects to assess if students have gained the necessary skills. This class consists of
four main areas:
o General Computer Technology, Internet/Email section
o Word Processing section
o Spreadsheet section
o Presentation section.
Students must score 70% or better in each area listed above in order to pass this class.
If you average less then 70% on any of the 4 areas of study (listed above) you will fail this course.
The 4 Mandatory Tests/Exams
After each one of the units listed above, you will have an assessment. These assessment are mandatory –
in other words, failure to complete any one of the four mandatory tests/exams will result in you failing
this course.
Proctoring Information/CWI Testing Center
Online students – Online students will need to take some assessments at a CWI testing center,
assessments will be proctored. See the Course Calendar/Schedule for details. A proctored assessment is
one that is overseen by an impartial individual (called a proctor) who monitors or supervises a student
while he or she is taking an assessment. The proctor ensures the security and integrity of the assessment
process. Students in my face-to-face course(s)/hybrid courses will take some assessments in class.
Testing center information will be found either on your Bb course and/or on your Course
Calendar/Schedule (which is also located on Bb.)
Homework
A combination of lecture, demonstration, homework, lab exercises, projects and tests may be assigned.
Homework, lab exercises and projects may be used as preparation for testing. At CWI, it is assumed that
there are two hours of homework required for each hour of class time. Therefore, students should plan on
spending at least two to three hours of additional homework for each hour of lecture (3 hours lecture x 2
or 3 = 6-9 hours study/homework a week).

Grading
Grades for this class will be based on assignments, projects and assessments. A student will only pass the
class with a C or better or if he/she passes each of the four areas with a score of at least 70% or higher.
This class is divided into 4 areas. For each area assignments and projects will be assigned and needs to be
submitted as directed in the course calendar.
Once a grade is entered into the Bb gradebook or SIMnet, you have two weeks to contest any error issue.
After a grade has been entered for two weeks, it is final and will not be changed.
The final grade will be based on the following percentage:
90.0 – 100% = A
80.0 – 89.9% = B
70.0 – 79.9% = C
60.0 – 69.9% = D
00.0 – 59.9% = F
Incompletes
As a general rule Instructors do not give Incompletes. However, to be eligible for an Incomplete, a student
must have an A for the class and have most of the class work completed. Instructors will only consider
awarding an Incomplete if a student meets the above criteria and has some extreme emergency situation.
In such cases, a student requiring an incomplete must submit a written appeal with full rationale to the
instructor at least three weeks prior to the end of the term.
Assignments, Quizzes & Assessments
Assignments are to be completed using information received from your instructor. A course calendar with
the requirements (and due dates/times) for each assignment will be made available on Blackboard. All
assignments, projects and assessments will be submitted as directed by your instructor and/or the course
calendar. Unless required by the assignment or project, Instructors do not accept assignments that are
printed and mailed or emailed to them. Most assignments require uploading through SIMnet or
Blackboard unless otherwise directed by your instructor.
Please do not ask me to open links of past assignments to submit late work.
Once a link is closed, I will not reopen it to accept late work.
Gradebook
If a student have more than 8 zeros, they will be given a grade of an F as a final grade. I will not allow
you to pass this course for any reason if you have more than 8 zeros. The instructor may not inform
students when they are approaching this failure threshold so students are responsible for monitoring their
own grade(s) and progress. You may also fail this course if you fail to complete any of the 4 mandatory
tests/exams.
Course Objectives and Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to demonstrate:

Computer Literacy Requirement (CSA)
CWI recognizes and advocates the critical need for computer literacy. Basic computer literacy at CWI is
defined as a demonstrated ability to use technology to access, manipulate, evaluate, use, and present
information.
Any students graduating with an associate degree (AA, AS, and AAS) must demonstrate computer
competency before they graduate, and it is strongly suggested that such proficiency be demonstrated
within the first 15 credit hours of coursework.
How To Meet The Computer Literacy Requirement
Students must demonstrate competency in four areas: operating system file management (general
technology/email), word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software using the Microsoft Office
Suite. Students may meet this requirement in a number of ways:
Option 1. Pass the Computer Skills Assessment (CSA) with a score of 70 percent or better in all four
areas. The CSA is administered within the Assessment Centers at the Ada County Center and the Micron
Center for Professional Technical Education.

Option 2. If one or more parts of the Assessments are not passed with a 70 percent or better, students may
choose to complete an equivalent class. An example of this is if a student passes the word processing and
presentation section but not the spreadsheet section, the student may then enroll in the Introduction to
Spreadsheet class. With a grade of C or better in that class, the student has then demonstrated competency
in all four areas since assessment of Windows file management is embedded in each class. Equivalent
classes are:
CISA 141 Introduction to Word Processing (1 credit)
CISA 115 Introduction to Excel (1 credit)
CISA 135 Introduction to Presentation Software (1 credit)
CISA 130 Introduction to Windows (1 credit)

Exemption From The CSA Testing Requirement
Students will be exempt from this testing requirement if they have completed any course listed below
with a grade of C or better. Students earning a D grade will receive credit for the class but will need to
either repeat the class or complete the CSA exam to meet the graduation requirement.

CSA Focus
The CSA is comprised of four sections: General Computer Technology, Internet/Email, Word processing,
Spreadsheets, and Presentations using the (Microsoft) Office Suite applications. Students will be required
to demonstrate competency in all four sections prior to applying for graduation from CWI.
This course will focus on Basic Computer Skills and Application Strategies. The software used for the
course will be the Operating System Windows 7, Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft Office 2013 (Word,
Excel, and PowerPoint). The course is specifically designed to these programs. Office Web Apps or
Starter is not recommended.
CWI Helpdesk
CWI has created the Helpdesk to assist when you have problems with Blackboard or your CWI email.
You contact them by going to www.mycwi.cc then look for the Helpdesk link. You can also call them
directly at this number 562-3444.
Contact the Helpdesk if you experience login issues, or other problems related to technology at CWI.
Your instructor can NOT help you with login issues. Once again, their number is 562-3444.
Course Evaluation
A course evaluation will be provided to all students toward the end of the semester. Students are
encouraged to fill out this survey. The course evaluation will appear in your Bb course around week 13 of
the semester. To help instructors continually improve courses, students will complete anonymous online
evaluations for each course.
Instructors do not see the evaluations until after final grades have been submitted to CWI.
The administrators who supervise faculty review these evaluations. Evaluations are your strongest voice
directly to people who determine who teaches. Use it wisely!

Course Expectations
Behavioral Expectations
Every student has the right to a respectful learning environment. In order to provide this right to all
students, students must take individual responsibility to conduct themselves in a mature and appropriate
manner and will be held accountable for their behavior. Students who disrupt the class, or behave
inappropriately or disrespectfully, as determined by the instructor, may be asked to leave the classroom.
Instructors or Student Services has the right to create a written behavioral contract with students; if a
student violates a behavioral contract, they may be released from the course. Lastly, no vaporizing
(vaping) or any other type of e-cigarette may be used in class.
I also reserve the right to modify the course syllabus and course calendar at any time throughout the
semester.
Academic Dishonesty
All work submitted by a student must represent his/her own ideas, concepts, and current understanding.
All material found during research must be correctly documented to avoid plagiarism. Cheating or
plagiarism in any form is unacceptable and violations will result in failure of the course. Acts of academic
dishonesty may also have more severe institutional ramifications.
Class Cancelation Policy
If there is an emergency and I am forced to cancel a class, I will send an email to your CWI email
account. Always be sure to check your spam folder in case an email is accidentally classified as spam. I
may also post an announcement in Bb about a cancelation.
It’s good practice to always check your CWI Bb account and email account before coming to school for
class.
All communication will be through CWI accounts only. Bb can be accessed through the icon on CWI’s
home page: www.cwidaho.cc . Email can be accessed through the login page at http://mail.live.com.
Emergency Procedures
In the event classes are canceled for any reason, a notice will be posted to Blackboard. Emergency
situations will also be announced through the college text and email alert system.
